I take the advanced college class every year. It is what I do for retirement. It keeps me busy. Being around the young students is a treasure. As everyone knows classes ended early this semester. I want you to know that I appreciate your videos. They are clear and concise instructions. Thank you.
Thanks for these videos! I am taking my first class at college and never worked with clay before, and your videos have given me a bit more insight to how to work with it then what I have been shown at school.
I love this, I only have access to primitive hand tools, not even a turntable. So I really appreciate a simple system. I can make the scalers so brill. Thank you
Wow, this was a very good tutorial and the best pinch pot one I have seen so far. Way more advanced techniques. That was a clever use of the old credit card type thing as well, good idea. TY.
I really like your videos! This is probably the best pinch-pot demo I've seen. :) (Also, you might want to consider using a manual-focused camera/lens, it keeps popping in and out of focus during the video.)
Hi Karen, Thank you for this great tutorial. I have a couple of questions. I am giving a 3-day pinch pot class, and hoping that the students will be able to walk away with their finished piece (underglazed and fired). So basically they will need to make the pinch pots, wait for them to get leatherhard, decorate and underglaze them, apply clear glaze, and fire away. The class will be running every day from 9am to 4pm for 3 days, so how long would you recommend I dedicate for each step?
Hi Noha- in three days that sounds ambitious... unless you want them to be able to pick up the following week. I have had kids do it with 5 days before. If you really are going with a once fire method, you may consider having them pinch (morning) make handles (morning), clean (afternoon), attach handles and footrings (afternoon) and finish cleaning . Second day, start and finish glazing (morning)... then leave them uncovered throughout the day- maybe even with a fan or in the sun. Then you could do a quick fire that evening if you are sure they are completely dry. Just make sure they are really dry though... because explosions of glazed greenware clay can be disastrous, as the shards stick all over the kiln and can damage the elements. Cups with handles should have EVEN drying to prevent the handles from cracking. So, you will have to control the drying so it is even. I recommend drying under towels, but that will also slow things down. I hope this helps some!
love this pinch pot instruction. i don't have a kiln or access to one. my question, could i use the same technique with air-dried clay? i've been playing around with it a bit and am falling in love with making pottery!
+sharon stanley Hi Sharon! I'm fairly confident that most of the techniques in clay could be used with air-dry clay! I've never really used air dry clay myself. I'd assume you could just use a paint rather than an underglaze if you choose to do the sgraffito technique... of course, it wouldn't be food safe... but a great learning process nonetheless! :-)
+KaransPotsAndGlass thank you so kindly karan...i'm just beginning to learn and am experimenting with air dried clay right now because it's cheaper then buying a kiln and fun to practice with! i'm loving your videos and learning a lot!
+Michelle Bowley Michelle- I just discovered this comment, and I am afraid I never responded to you! I just use super sharp scissors or an exacto! (But I prefer scissors!) :)
Thank you Karan. I enjoyed this video and was looking for a clear and step by step guide - I found it. Thanks to you. I am thinking of ordering Botz Engobe to add design and texture and for my kids to use. I also came across underglaze pencils a while ago and bought some. Have you ever used Botz Plus? I have some of their stoneware glazes and they are very good and would like to experiment with this product in the future.
+Smile Wider Sorry for the delay in responding! I just now saw this! No, I've never used or even heard of Botz Engobe! I'm assuming you're in a country besides the US? ;-) I bet it would work! I've only used a few engobes in the past, and then, I've never used them on greenware. My advice is just make sure the engobe doesn't stick to the shelf if on the bottoms of pots. I assume it wouldn't, but since it has been years since trying them, I'd test if it first to make sure! The only reason I use the underglaze with my kids is just in case they make their pot too thick, and one explodes, the underglaze won't fuse to the kiln shelf! I've never had one blow up, but I still like to be cautious! ;-) Ha! So, I have a question for you then too... would you clear glaze over the engobe once bisque fired then? I've actually only ever used engobes on top of another glaze in the past! I'm curious to know! :-)
+KaransPotsAndGlass Hi there. I will be clear glazing after I have applied them to bisque. Same goes for the pencils. I use Botz because I like the set they do and I started using Botz Stoneware glazes. I plan on using Botz Plus when I make larger piece in the future.
+Daisy Marin Hi Daisy! If the marks are just slightly scuffs rather than dents... perhaps a red rib with a little water? It can give a really tight, smooth texture that is nearly shiny. Almost burnished. However, if the scuffs are actually dents, I would move back to a stainless steel scraper... to scrape away the clay and even it to the bottom of the dent. (I hope one of these two solutions makes sense for your problem!) Let me know if you need more clarification, or a different answer! ;-)
Hello I'm curious where you would get special tools for ceramic? I have a small studio at my home and I have a large variety of hand tools but I'm missing stuff like Sponges, and and other cleanup tools xD (like that cheese grater looking tool) lol I use to love ceramics in my highschool, but its been afew years and I sadly haven't even used my studio :/ but since I'm unemployed I figured it'd be best to bust some cool stuff out :)
Zane Woods Hi Zane- the surforms are actually tools you can find in a hardware store, but with different handles. I buy most of my stuff from pottery suppliers where I also get my clay and glaze like this one: cornellstudiosupply.com/ or www.clay-king.com/
Here is the full playlist for that exercise. ua-cam.com/play/PLj0pNzEmvM_oCacLjYvR3iWdXbBmLdGva.html . If you would like to see a more advanced version check out my Ceramics II Pinch Cups with Handles and Footrings here ua-cam.com/play/PLj0pNzEmvM_r2nmjBvHwFv-7W9AYfs1LO.html
Hi Eunice- sorry for the delay- I was out of town. What is the clay you are using? Be careful not to overwork your edges, or use excessive water on the edges, as that can cause cracking. It basically will break down the clay and recycle it if you add too much water. Just let me know a few more specifics on when you see the cracking, and I can help you troubleshoot more!
KaransPotsAndGlass Thank you! I think it had to do with where I wedged it. It was an old wood table and it may have sucked out the water. I’m not sure if that’s correct but my cracking was before it dried while I worked it. I’m using a speckled buff but I was wondering if I could make something like this with porcelain?
@@EuniceVillalobos1 - yes, you absolutely can make it from porcelain! As I tell my kids... just pinch it quickly, and smooth over cracks before they get big... immediately smooth them over! If you pinch or squeeze the clay when it begins to dry, it tends to crack!
Boa tarde ! Yes- I know- sorry. I have been meaning to redo this video. I made it for my students one day after school with the only camera I had available at that time. Unfortunately, I didn't know until it was too late after the video was shot that it had such focus issues. Needless to say, in my newer videos I would never use that camera again! :) It was one of the first ones I ever made! :)

+Ursa Minor That's awesome!!! I hope they help! :-)
The finishing tip with the card is absolutely genius!!!

Fantastic tutorial, so clear and concise, and ideal for me as a beginner. Thank you! 😊
Great instruction! I will try this and add some surface texture with textured mats and cardboard.
The rim trick is awesome! Thanks a lot!!!

sharon stanley Thanks! Good luck!! :-)
I am worried that the bottom of the bowl is still not flat because all these steps depend so much on visual judgement.
Sometimes visual judgement is our best teacher! It gets easier with practice!
What do you use to create the notches in the plastic cards?
Awesome video!

+KaransPotsAndGlass LOL I'd forgotten what my question was! Thanks for getting back to me. :-)
Hello 👋 where did you buy yours tools please. Thanks 🙏
What type of clay are you using? Great instruction for the beginner.
Joy- it is "Standard 103"- just earthenware without grog!
Thank you

Great work. But how to heat it before using it as soup cup .. I just love to use clay pots..
thats a great making..but how can we get those blades or instruments etc..by wat name v should ask in stores..thank u from india.. :-) :-)..
www.mudtools.com/ sells them online! You can try to see if they ship internationally! :-)
KaransPotsAndGlass thanq..:-)
What do you recommend I do if there are scuff marks on my pot and it isn't smoothing out with a yellow rib??
+Daisy Marin

Love the trick with the card
Great tutorial
Hi I am wanting to know what kind of clay are you using?
Valentin Torres this clay is standard 103 earthenware (no grog in this!)
Great plastic card trick😊
But i have 6 hours in my exam to make one
Try some faster drying with a hair dryer or a heat gun! :)
So what would be next to do?
