I want to examine the Ukraine war update on the front lines gray zone area where the battle in Kharkiv has unfolded on its 5th day as the fog of war starts to lift. News of the world even has traveled fast. Then I want to take a look at if Russian forces might be planning to invade Sumy next. We’ll also cover any recent diplomatic changes in messaging on either side or their allies.
The first thing you need to know is that In the Kharkiv direction, The number of border villages Russia claims to have captured in Kharkiv has now increased to between 9 and 12.
The number isn’t important, what matters really matters is how close is the closest one to Kharkiv city? One such close proximity town that was captured appears to be (Loo-k'yahn-tsee) Luk'yantsi. The reason this is concerning from the Ukrainian defenders point of view is because the next town in line is (Lee-pt-see) Lyptsi. If that were to fall it could theoretically put Kharkiv within Artillery range. This is why I think the Ukrainian intelligence general said to the new york times quote ““The situation is on the edge. Every hour this situation moves toward critical.” However It’s unclear what the end goal is for the Russian assault at this point. Do they plan to continue forward with what Moscow has described as a buffer zone?
Evidence that these claims of Russian advances are likely accurate comes from The Ukraine’s general of staff who said quote"At present, the enemy has tactical success" then we can take a look at a video that has gone viral of what appears to be two Russian platoons marching within 3 meters of each other. Normally if you expected to receive fire you would be space out much further instead they appear to be walking into Kharkiv oblast which seems to possibly support the reports that initial defensive lines did not work as anticipated.
Before we continue I have a small disclaimer for you, keep in mind that the situation on the ground is developing rapidly and the information is subject to change. This report I’ve put together for you here, is a curation of various different sources all of which have their own biases, I made sure some of them are from the Russian perspective and some are from the Ukranian one. I too admittedly have my own personal biases. But I think that’s part of being human, especially if you’re talking about something you care about. However, It’s important for you to be aware of those biases. I’m here to share with you my imperfect view of the battlefield so I can hear your feedback and constructive criticisms, both of which I appreciate as it helps me improve.
We’ve seen reports of major shake ups in both the Ukrainian leadership. On May 11th just one day after the invasion of Kharkiv, the Ukrainian Commander responsible for the defense of North Eastern frontlines General Yuriy (Ha-lush-kin) Halushkin was relieved of his command and replaced by General (Mick-high-low Drah-pah-tee) Mykhaylo Drapatiy. Dprapatiy was responsible for leading the combat operations in recapturing the city of Kherson in 2022. The fact that the former commander in Kharkiv was replaced could be seen as another indication that the initial defensive operations did not go as planned. Newsweek reportedly spoke to Ukrainian military and local officials in vovchansk who said that Russian artillery shelling on the border made it difficult for them to build proper fortifications. It’s tough to bring in civilian construction equipment and lay down dragons teeth and drudge up trenches when you’re under explosive artillery fire. What remains to be seen is if defensive lines were created further back from the border in safer places, this is something we will find out in the coming weeks.

I’d love to see a show if possible about what if USA nato and eu give Ukraine a $3-400 billion loan. It could have strings attached but mainly on rebuilding. Would it not be better to let Ukraine buy what they want and our allies would be selling so a win win situation. Keep up great job Roll Tide

@Taskandpurpose, thank you for your service "average infantryman Cappy!" ^_^ Actually, I'd enjoy a one-on-one with you about your service, experiences if you didn't mind sharing and as someone who does not keep up with these wars, an understanding about what is really going on with the Ukraine/Russia conflict. I can't say I trust Russia/Putin but I don't trust the politicians in the U.S. who seem all too eager to just hand over hundreds of billions to Ukraine when there are so many conflicting voices. I can understand why you feel "positive discourse may not be possible anymore", especially as bad as politics have become in the U.S. I'll be the first to admit I too have strong opinions about politics but I just don't know enough about the Russia/Ukraine conflict to understand why it happened, why the U.S. is dumping billions into it and why, originally it was said by a "reporter" earlier on who was said to be "there", that "The U.S. Military is on the ground in Ukraine and they're running the war...." And that's the last I heard besides the occasional, "Ukraine is winning! Russia is winning! Congress is assembling another multi-billion dollar aid package to Ukraine!"

In the early 1970's I was a British infantryman in West Germany. We were trained to fight a war that, thank the gods, never happened. I remember saying to an officer, "These massive manoeuvres are too vulnerable. The next war will be fought at platoon or even section level." He laughed at me. Maybe I had a field marshal's baton in my knapsack... But, it just seemed logical to me. Armies, historically, always seem to be perfectly trained to fight the last war, not the next one.

Look at the Eastern front in WW1 vs the Western. Full of fluid movement as the terrain yields itself to that. move to ww2 in the breach of the Siegried line and later Rhine river. T1 armies fighting is different from a T2 vs T1.5 like what is now happening

Im not surprised, and no one else should be, either, to see the use of motorcycles or ATV’s in Ukraine. The nature of the terrain is what gave so many horse mounted warriors an advantage in this area back in the day.

I can imagine as a commander one of the worst factors of planning is never knowing what actual resources are actually available to deploy. Western press glamorizes short term deliveries of limited equipment, however those cannot be replaced by attrition.
As a commander, if you're entirely reliant on a state with which you do not actually have a mutual defense treaty, you know you're cooked, whether today or tomorrow.

Two caveats, public announcements only ever give general timelines, the exact times are almost certainly set well ahead of time but are kept secret, so your enemy can't plan around it easily, also Ukraine can BUY more western kit so long as it isn't stuck in an ungodly backlog, and they have the cash to do so, but said equipment can eventually be replaced.
The dumbass old corrupt bastards in congress pass one bill and they expect the war to end within a month or something. These guys live in their own bubble and are unaware of reality.

These gains have been completed purely by Russian recon units which should be extremely concerning to the UAF. From everything I have seen Russia has utilized very little mechanized forces thus far and maybe surprised at how quickly they are gaining ground. I have seen little evidence that the Ukrainian estimate of 50-60% of Russian forces have already been committed bc again almost all these territorial gains have been by foot. In my experience this looks like recon by fire that penetrated much further than anticipated and the true offensive hasn’t even begun yet based on the limited use of mechanized units. It wouldn’t surprise me if Russia looks to potentially open up yet another front from Belarus just north of Kyiv, if this occurs Ukraine is going to have a hard time deploying their reserves
I just don't see how Russian logistics will be able to make the push. We saw what happened in the beginning with the assault on Kyiv. If those long lines of logistics form up and bottleneck this time Ukraine will lay waste to Russians. Those long convoys can't happen this time with Himars and Atacms.
I think you're right, but that each of these new border incursions are a feint for a larger offensive on the eastern front. If Ukraine committed more aid and troops to the north to stop advances on Kharkov and Kiev, it might make the line by the dnieper brittle. If the Russians can achieve a breakthrough against the Ukrainian main force it could be decisive

I don't think Lukashenko would allow a second Russian attack from belarus. It didn't go very well last time, and doing it again when Ukraine has had two years to prepare on that border, when they might not care that belarus didn't declare war this time, wouldn't be a good idea. Especially because making a new logistics train all the way to belarus then south would further strain already stressed Russian Logistics, whereas a Sumy offensive (if they can get the men for it) would be much closer to already existing and well used supply lines.

When I was an intelligence analyst, the biggest challenge I faced was to think the way the enemy is thinking. At the strategic level, this was much less difficult than at the tactical, for obvious reasons. I liked your disclaimer of your own personal bias. Sometimes, when you do things that irk people, saying " Yes I did this. So what exactly is the problem?" will leave people speechless. Awesome video Chris. Can I tell you the Russian goal ? They are using Grants strategy from Petersburg. Once the enemy runs out of infantry reserves, you extend the lines until they break. They are adding a few hundred miles to the front line. Much easier than facing fixed defenses - the UA is already stretched thin - I am not sure the RU has another 10 brigades to put into combat however. That's about all it would take.
I like that. Friends & I have discussed the very thing in the last month or so It looks a lot like movements during the US Civil War. Maybe the Uke's should be looking at US history more closely ;-)

Probably true imo. All "maskirovka" aside, this just makes sense. No "buffer zone to keep Belgorod safe" bs. Russia understands they have the numbers advantage, and that Ukraine is having trouble bolstering their infantry numbers. By doing this, they force Ukraine to draft more people, straining their civilian economy, army morale (using people that don't really want to fight), and further weakening the country's will to fight, people do not want to see their neighbors forced into the army.
They force more open engagements, increase direct casualties and atrittion considerably, it just makes sense.
And why's it being done so gradually? Because land isn't the objective, attrition is. And since they have MUCH more firepower, combat operations benefit them 100%. It doesn't matter if they lose more vehicles than Ukraine, vehicles Russia can replace, infantry Ukraine cannot.
If you outnumber the enemy it is the sensible thing to do. Of course Russia (and the union) have a limited number of competent officers and supplies, so can not realistically attack on the whole front at once.
Don't forget however, due to increased pressure in North Africa (proxy war between the French & Russians)
France is very likely to start putting boots on the ground soon. France gets a large percentage of its uranium from Niger, and nuclear is not only their primary power source but part of their responsibilities to Nato is in their nuclear weapons.
They cannot afford to permanently lose Franco-Africa, and in order to force Russia to leave North Africa they are putting more support into the Ukraine.
The chances of their deployment in the Ukraine only increases as the situation in Franco-Africa becomes more dire to French interest. If they can cut off the head of the snake the body will deconstrict.
Russia's interest in North Africa is Gold, which they are using to keep their economy afloat from western sanctions. However this looks like it's going to back fire in Russia's face, as they are only cementing greater direct intervention by France.
Who are the one country in Europe who could glass Moscow before Russia could hit them, so nuclear black mail by Russia is slowly proving to be an effective deterrent.
Most people don't seem to realize France, not the US, Not Russia, Not India or China, have the most advanced nuclear technology in the world. Both in power generation and in weapons.
French counter strikes would be the first into Russia's western interior in the event of a nuke attack by Russia.
The US wouldn't be the first to hit them. So France over all has more to lose but at the same time the most leverage over Russian nuclear black mail within Europe. Russia is putting the French economy on death ground, and regardless of jokes people make the French military does not fuck around.
And they are petty enough that they would do it, regardless of what the US says.
French intervention would immediately remove the single most important advantage Russia has, air superiority. The only reason why this conflict looks like our civil war is because Russia dominates the air space.
If France enters the war, that advantage goes away and the nature of this conflict will dramatically shift.

They were weak then, but so was Ukraine. Russia however has drafted a lot of men and the factories are running at full power to refurbish old soviet machinery. They are about as strong as they can get the coming few years right now.
Ukraine however has difficulty replacing its men because lots of them are dead and the rest has fled the country. Western countries had other interests like politics and economy and forgot about Ukraine. So not a lot of weapons are being given. Ukraine is doomed right now unless something really changes in the west.

Scott Ritter foresaw this dire situation of Ukraine's entire frontline collapsing from as far back as mid-2022 based on the potential military disparity between them. For this, he was much maligned for his pro-Putin propaganda.
That's a big step in the right direction, yeah.
But it's kinda late in the war to be feeling out what sources are trustworthy.

The artillery rounds promised by the NATO partners have not arrived yet. The RF is shelling the whole front with 7 to 1 advantage. The F!-16 are delayed, again. Before General Zaluzhniy was replaced, he said that only 10 to 30% of the promised aid was delivered to Ukraine. It is still the case. Sad. But fact.
And a third to half of the aid is stolen by Ukrainian leadership. It’s a sinking ship. Every man for himself if the opportunity arises
The problem with the F16's are the N.O.S. (new old stock) and R.O.S (reproduced old stock) parts needed to get the mothballed F16's airworthy again.
Denmark and the Netherlands are in the middle of the conversion from the F16 to the F35 so F16 spare parts were not bought anymore.
F16's were canabilised so the remaining F16's could fly.
Bringing the mothballed and canabilised airframes airworthy again takes alot more time then expected.
The demand for 2nd hand / new F16's and parts has also skyrocketed.

Here we go with the F-16 argument again. The amount of training, repair facilities, and aerospace ground equipment required to support 61 F-16s is immense. Two thousand personnel for two squadrons plus training and spare airframes, PMEL, avionics intermediate shop, hydrazine, jet engine shop, sheet metal, fire fighters, etc. Where is Ukraine's gunnery range? Where will they practice hot pit refueling and rearming? Where is their depo maintenance facility? Who will train, sustain, and evaluate maintenance personnel? Where are their simulators? Do they have professional military education facilities? Who will perform readiness exercises? Most of this knowledge is almost dead. We saw what happened to Abrams tanks sent there. Am I the only one awake here?

The game has changed. Chasiv Yar holds plenty of value for Russia, but if Ukraine can’t mount a meaningful defense in Kharkiv, the Russians are going to go as far as they can.
The Russians have sent patrols into and around Chasiv Yar. I haven't heard of a major grab for it yet. They're just studying it for now.

I was one of about two dozen people who had volunteered to "plus up" a unit that was deploying for a mission to Afghanistan. Fortunately, most of us ended up being placed in the same company, with all but one of those soldiers being MTOEd into the newly formed 4th Platoon.

Russia doen't have numerical advantage. Number of Russian forces is 3-3.5 times smaller than Ukrainian ones, because In Russia there was only one limited mobilization in 2022, November, where former military personnel were called up.
In Ukraine, mobilization hasn't ended for 2 years, where even disabled people are being drafted.

I heard from some pro Russian sources that a big chunk of the forces pushing into Kharkov Oblast are Storm Z veterans, aka the guys recruited from prisons, who survived their service and got pardoned and then signed contracts with the Russian MOD.
If so, then it's plausible that they don't scream professional and well disciplined when you look at them, but they are battle hardened veterans who know how to storm.
But I don't know if that's the case, the guys who were saying that didn't provide any documents

I work in a field that requires a lot of GPS use. This newest Russian incursion coincides with the extremely powerful solar storm. I noticed some major GPS issues last weekend extending into the first half of this week. It made me wonder if part of the Russian success is due to Ukrainian GPS-tethered defensive arms/equipment malfunctioning or being compromised by the storm. Just a thought!

There was no defenses when this has started. Ukraine's counter offensive started when Russia had huge lines of trenches already built.

in September 2009, the European Commission recognized Georgia as an aggressor because it fired at Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia (it seceded back in 1991). Georgia's borders have not changed since 1991. that is why no one will make a video about this - it will not be possible to blame Russia

Survival? Not really. Worst case scenario for Ukraine is they never get their 20% lost territory back. Kiev is not in danger, nor is Odessa. For that matter, Russians won’t even go for Kharkiv or Sumy. This is all just a big feint.

I worked with a guy in Houston Texas that was part of the “Operation Market Garden” he walked with a limp and I asked him if he was okay, he said it was an old wound that he got in WWII during Operation Market Garden and he got his Second Purple Heart there, he was with the 82nd Airborne, I told him my dad was in the 82nd after WWII. He invited me and some other guys that worked together over one day and we asked him about his service and his wife showed us all the medals he received, Silver Star, Bronze Star with a V and 2 more things with it, 2 Purple Hearts and a few that I can’t remember, he was an incredible man

Russia knows that it has the manpower advantage. It's trying to stretch the front line as long as possible to spread Ukrainians thin, making it easier to punch through the defensive lines.

1:25 I was able to find where that video was taken, it's just north of the village Buhruvatka.
Judging from the maps it took three days for the Russians to enter the village so I doubt these Russians were walking nonchalant for long.
