When I was 12 my sister 10, my great grandmother died at 98. We went to a funeral with her looking much different in her open casket, first dead person I had ever seen. We all drove a hundred miles to where she would be buried next to her long dead husband. The casket was suspended over the hole, the service was done and having nowhere else to go we all loitered around the cemetery, well the workers finally came out removed the fake grass from the pile of displaced earth, lowered the casket into the ground, and with one motion of a little skip loader filled in the grave compacted it and drove away, to the collective silence of all. We all stood there in stunned silence...this song reminds me of that day 47 years ago.
And still remember it like it was yesterday . I know the feeling . I know this is a year late reply ,but i hope your life is ok . Peace to you and yours
I'm a grave digger and that's exactly what we do. We're so connected with death that we understand we'll all be under that bell shortly. It isn't that they didn't care, it's that they understand the reality of what happens to all of us. The cemetery workers deal with their own mortality on a daily basis. Just think about that. Think about burying the 20 year old, the five year old, the 30 something year old. That's your own mortality staring you straight in the face.
This is my favorite for a few reasons…. In the unfortunate truth of this world, many of us bury our children….😢so this hits home for me…. Sigh.💔 Thank you Dave Matthews for this gem. Love, Timmy’s Mom #Forever11 #TimmysMom #ileftmyheartinheaven
thank you dave for this song, i gave my twin brother a shallow grave on the beach so he could feel the rain and have sunsets forever rip mark xoxo mike
Michael Parker - So sorry Mike, I can't imagine especially having an identical twin brother. Hasn't always been easy but it's like having a built in best friend that always understands what you're talking about! Just know that he is in a much better place now. We all hope to get there when it's our time. If you ever want to talk or anything let me know and we can connect. No crap here, not some weirdo, only sincere. My best
Hey bro, i know it's been years, but i have a twin brother as well and i could not hold my tears by reading your comment, i hope your brother rests well, i hope you are hanging there :)
I was never a big Mathews fan until I heard this song, then I realized what they played on the radio was the least interesting stuff from him and he was a well of talent. This acoustic version demonstrates the level of talent Mathews has. Killer version here.
That can be said about so many artists. People think the same about John Mayer, but he's on the level of Jimi Hendrix and SRV, perhaps even a better version of the two. You would really only know this if you looked into his playing, not the crap on the radio.
Oh hell yes. Never listen to anything from Dave Matthews on the radio, or for that matter studio albums. It is all over produced and trash.. ok not trash, just not what he is good at in my opinion. He is amazing and when he plays with Tim it is the most magical thing since immaculate conception. My first introduction to Dave Matthews was Live at Luther College and from that day forward I was hooked.
Me too. My wife is a big fan and I went to a concert with her and all I can say is that I was blown away! One of the best , entertaining concert I’ve seen. See them live you will not regret it . They jam.
Jeez how I wish I could’ve been there for this concert. Goes down as one of the best ever. When it comes to Tim and Dave there is this and Luther College.
This song stucked into my head for so damn long now. Someone played it in our van when we drove to a festival 10 years ago? The lyrics are so strong it's magical. I choke everytime I listen to this song.
Tim Reynolds Makes the songs amazing in my opinion. Including Gravedigger. Especially Gravedigger, This way, when that one line makes you stop listening and think hits you, you have something to listen to when you think. Also, what about the people who are interested in listening to the Music more than the words?? His playing with the song makes it so complete that no matter what you like to listen to, there is something in the song that piques our interest.
I appreciate all the folks who put these videos up so I can watch the whole concert, but I still gotta get the DVD! Especially since there's this really cool extra short movie called "So Damn Lucky" (I think) that I can't seem to find on UA-cam.
gravedigger lyrics-dave matthews Cyrus Jones 1810 to 1913 Made his great granchildren believe You could live to a hundred and three A hundred and three is forever when you're just a little kid So Cyrus Jones lived forever Gravedigger When you dig my grave Could you make it shallow So that I can feel the rain Gravedigger Muriel Stonewall 1903 to 1954 She lost both of her babies in the second great war Now you should never have to watch Your only children lowered in the ground I mean you should never have to bury your own babies Gravedigger When you dig my grave Could you make it shallow So that I can feel the rain Gravedigger Ring around the rosey Pocket full of posey Ashes to ashes We all fall down Gravedigger When you dig my grave Could you make it shallow So that I can feel the rain Gravedigger Little Mikey Carson 67 to 75 He rode his Bike like the devil until the day he died When he grows up he wants to be Mr. Vertigo on the flying trapeze Ohhh, 1940 to 1992 Gravedigger When you dig my grave Could you make it shallow So that I can feel the rain Gravedigger When you dig my grave Could you make it shallow So that I can feel the rain Feel the rain I can feel the rain Gravedigger Gravedigger
I fully admit, I'm not a big Dave Matthews fan and I actually don't much care for the album version of this song. This performance of the song though has stuck with me since a friend would routinely put this on in the background. The tone and emotion pours through.
I buried my son and this song is so dear to me! I hope my grave is shallow so I can feel the rain
im sorry for you son. I have two litte guys....cant imagine that

I fell in love with him after seeing this entire show in a $30k home theatre. I was enchanted the entire time.
I haven't cried in about 15 years. This song hit me so fucking hard and I just started crying uncontrollably... Now it gets me every fucking time....
this song gives me that goosebumps feeling when you hear a song that really connects with you.
This is probably the best bluray concert video out there. The quality of the recording and the talent of these guys is phenomenal.
Incredible song. Incredible performance. I'm in awe.
Beautiful. And Tim does the detailed work; a great guitarist.
Ego is set aside, and he lets his playing speak for itself.
@@angrytater2456 yes very talented
"Gravedigger when you dig my grave could you make it shallow so I can still hear Dave"....
Amen
For those thinking of loved ones they have lost, may they rest in peace and may they feel the rain.
As in may they have a shallow grave?

But, I do, especially when it becomes real.
Such an amazing song, lyrics, voice, pretty much everything. man, I love this song.
I love you for giving me something to listen to. I love a rainy night.
This song stucked into my head for so damn long now. Someone played it in our van when we drove to a festival 10 years ago? The lyrics are so strong it's magical. I choke everytime I listen to this song.

I LOVE THIS SONG AND THE STORY BEHIND IT!
What's the story behind it?
Masters of their craft.
Derek Price what craft precisely? I'm just missing it.
Tim Reynolds Makes the songs amazing in my opinion.
