Jim Carrey is Chip Douglas, cable installer. Raised on television sitcoms, he wants life to look just like My Three Sons. And when he meets single guy Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick), he sees his chance for some serious male bonding. But Chip's idea of friendship - which includes physical assault, a game of 'Porno Password' and a medieval joust - may be hazardous to Steven's health. This trailer was the reason the film was poorly received; the audience thought they were seeing a light hearted family comedy, but it was a lot darker than they thought.

What's sad about the movie is that Steve refuses to accept Chip as a friend because he's so different and extreme. But in actuality he was just really lonely and had no proper relationships in his life.

This is one of the most delightfully mean spirited comedies I've ever seen. It's one of the funniest dark comedies I've ever seen.
Honestly, I think it was a film ahead of its time (for a dark comedy) and that's why it didn't do well. If people watch it now it resonates.

Reminds me a bit of the Rob Schneider commercials South Park made fun of. Studios in the 90's only know how to make one comedy trailer. "Matthew Broderick just wants free cable. But he's about to find out that getting free cable... always comes with a price. Meet Jim carrey. Matthew Broderick in... The Cable Guy.": P Anyway, I get why the audience was confused by the actual movie. But it's still my favorite Jim Carrey movie, to be honest. It's the one I think the most about these days.
Chip was actually a great friend to have. He did anything for his friend. Until his friend rejected him.

I looked it up after reading this, and it's false. I speak italian, they called it "Il rompiscatole", which means something like 'The obnoxious/irritating/etcetera' which is not quite different, but is delivered in a gently well-mannered way.

Movie traumatized me as a 4 year old. why the hell did my parents take me to this?
One of my favorites for sure to bad it was a flop at the time but as a 5 year old I loved it.

This film came out neatly 30 years ago.
But look how it reflects our society today.
Jim Careys character is actually an INCEL......
Like so many of the guys today, no social circle, glued to the screens, atomised, lonely, not in a relationship, and seeking community/friendship and somewhere to belong.
Matthew Brodicks character had to hook up with a sex worker after his relationship broke down, he had limited options, like a lot of guys today.
But look how many options his love interest had and how many dates she had in the film.

People ultimately need love and validation. When a man doesn't matter to a woman, when she doesn't gaze at him with a loving smile, tell him she wants him/needs him, that he matters to her.
A lot of guys have never had that.
This will cause disillusionment/isolation/soul sadness and mental health issues in men. No amount of material things, por* will be able to replace that.
The problem in the west is 2 fold. Incels can't get a woman and the ones that do get one, end up in divorce/breaking up or being cheated on and losing more than the lady. So they swear off relationships and end up lonely all the same. (Mgtow)
Both have the effect of creating lonely, angry, atomised ppl and broken society with plummeting birth rates. And can spell the end of that society.
What are we seeing in the west now?
Falling sperm counts, falling testosterone levels, births, marriage, anomie and a rapidly ageing society, with catastrophic debt levels.
White ppl used to have close family bonds but now they no longer keep ties with family and send old ppl to homes.
Jobs for life are a thing of the past, from where they used to form friends.
White ppl lost their matchmaking culture and used to marry form within their own tried and tested social circle.
With all that now gone, internet dating and cold approaching/PUA random women that u know nothing about is the way. Which can be dehumanising and toxic.

I know that Carrey is supposed to be the "villain." But what's funny to me is that Broderick's character Steven is not a likable guy at all.
1) He flakes on his friends and takes them for granted.
2) He is a desperate simp for his ex Robin, and you can see why she dumped him.
3) Overall, he's a boring loser in his life with no purpose/ambition.
So if they were going to try and make Carrey seem like more of the antagonist, they should've written Steven as more likable, interesting, and sympathetic. 😂
