  • This tractor was only 4 years old when it was in a pole shed fire. I bought it from a tractor salvage yard. These projects are treasures due to the savings. I logged over 1,200 trouble free hours doing a lot of landscaping work here. We looked at some more fire burned tractors after this for some side projects. It was evident they were set on fire because the engines were bad to collect the insurance money. I hope you enjoyed the video. Thank You for your time and watching, Jeff

    Your workmanship is truly outstanding, and to have completed this project in three months is remarkable!
    You are completely unfazed by what might deter the majority of people, and your ability to see beyond the current, invariably wrecked state of a vehicle to how you envision it to be once completed is enviable.
    Thank you for bringing us along on your project, it was an insight into project management on quite a scale!

    Nice save Jeff! Beautiful job, she's a looker! You breathed new life and resurrected that "ole girl" which would have had a sure destination to the scrap yard. I have an old 1987 4WD Super E series extendahoe which is handier than a shirt pocket I might add, so I can appreciate what you did here.

    Hi That is amazing to see what you started and ended with! the video was the best 14 mins i've spent here in ages. I re built a fire damaged Case 1490 and 1690 tractors for guys in my shop , They weren't this bad but still a headache by the time they where right! so know exactly what you went through. I bet with parts prices these days you couldn't buy this and do it now. I used to buy and fix tractors to re sell, I quit 2 years ago, when the only guy gettin holidays and a new truck from my work was my parts guy. I just farm a bit and do repairs for local guys now, parts price is there problem!
    Thanks for sharing this video, Happy wrenching
    Regards Robert

      @2jeffs1  10 років тому

      Hi Robert. What a nice / interesting write up from you. You sure are correct on the parts prices now. Everything seems so different from years back. On the car parts - so much is modular now. (Modular = Expensive spelled backwards?) Years ago you could repair and re-use quite a bit of the parts with a tad of creative. Sounds like your doing a great job making the best of things yet! Thank You & Happy Holidays, Jeff

    I like that them old cases will last forever and you can work on it yourself not like this new equipment with computers that you have to take to the shop. And I like old equipment and vehicles better than the new ones because they last longer and that's back when people took pride in what they do

      +Gurman Sandhu Thank you Gurman. This was one of those things I always wanted but the funds weren't available to purchase a decent one. The running used ones in that price range were quite rough and would of needed repairs shortly after anyway. It was in a tractor salvage yard. I did go look at it several times before purchase trying to check the engine out best as possible. So glad I did that now where many beneficial changes to the yard could be done now! Nice to get a comment on the video work! I always enjoyed doing video editing & shooting for many years prior to this YT thing. I have a bunch of video of good times had by many doing different fun things here. Lately I put some together for the people that were in them. They make great gifts & generate sweet grins & thank you's. :>)

    That is a fantastic job you did resurrecting that backhoe from the grave. I saw a bobcat that caught on fire for sale and I was hesitant to buy it. It is not nearly as bad as your backhoe was. But now seeing what you did there makes me want to tackle it.

    Hi Jeff
    I have a case 580 ck and I let my boyfriend use it sometimes, its not as nice as yours but it sure digs, does your wife use it also?, I noticed your crt scope on your workbench, tecktronics?, what I love about america is people like you, you can fix anything and are willing the help and share your knollege with others. I was born in Hong Kong and people are not that helpful. YOUR THE MAN

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  10 років тому

      Yeah them were very nice machines! The ones around here look a bit rough too. Actually a friend who had a 580 c & wanted to store it here for a weekend. (working in this area & didn't have a trailer) He told me to go ahead and use it. That's what got me going to get one. And actually a customer told me about the one I bought. Here's the best part. It was supposed to be a 1986. I started ordering parts and nothing was correct. Come to find out it was a 1991. (bought in 95) Of course the hours were unknown but all the pivot pins had minimal wear. The scope is a Hameg. It don't get used as much now where the new scan tools have grafting. I'm set up to record waveform on a micro SD and then play it back on the desktop! That's the hot ticket for very intermittent issues. The current limited power supply has been quite beneficial too. My Ratelco died a while back and bought a Mastech. Finally looked at the old unit. It had a bad disc transistor but the whole unit had to be torn apart to get at that one! Thank you for your kind comment, Jeff

    You did a beautiful job on that restore. Those burned vehicles can really be a headache, but you did it right by stripping the whole thing from the beginning. I usually try not to, and end up spending more time than if I had just done it right. Really nice work.

      klmartin, Thank you for your comment. This was one job that I wondered if I could pull it off. I did have most of the tools to do this but did borrow a few. That torque multiplier was borrowed. When I was done I polished the lenz, tool and cleaned the case. Also gave that guy a $20. He asked if there was anything I wished to borrow! Had to borrow the cylinder hones too from another friend as we were always exchanging favors.

    I had a 580 super k that burned, it was the positive battery cable rubbing on the metal over the top of the bell housing. The frame is used as a fuel tank/ hydraulic tank and with heavy use the welds on the inside of the box frame crack resulting in fuel/hydraulic leaks needing frequent welding. The end result is an oily buildup on the subframe providing something flammable to burn. Cost me a fortune to fix but we put it back in operation.

      +david peirce Hi David. Most work usually run around 16 - 1,800 RPM. The machine is limited to 2,500 max. It is nice to have an older machine in great cond. Sounds like a nice choice you have there! Went and looked at it twice where was aware that people were damaging machines with a bad engine and claiming for insurance profit. (seen a few that was quite evident) Heard they do oil samples now to keep the corrupt people at bay. When I first got this my dad stopped in. He asked 3 times if it will run. Finally told him not to worry - your not the one paying for it. ;>) Good luck on your project Dave, Jeff.

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  8 років тому +2

      +Steve Raymond Thankx Steve. Actually a few people did ask - why get so fussy as you said. The part that made me feel the most comfortable was the story on how it was damaged fit the evidence. It was in a pole shed that started on fire. There was those rafter staple plates laying on the floor. Usually when people were burning for profit on a bad machine they do it at a job site or out in a field. The oil was down not quite a 1/2 qt and fairly clean. I could turn the engine over and felt good with that tool that goes in the bell housing hole for that purpose. The trans I had no idea but wasn't worried I guess. There is a dipstick for checking and was pretty clean oil. All in all sure is great when all did go so well!

    :) Thats really amazing. Without a doubt you do incredible work. And man, its worth it on something like that, because its truely so useful! It seems so much more worth it to spend all that time restoring a piece of machinery, compared to just an old car that will get driven every once in a while. Real appropriate place to put all that effort :) Good deal man!

      That machine has earned it's keep here. Their was a sewer project going on near here. They always need a place to get rid of material and it's free fill. Total they brought in hundreds of loads. At night I'd go out and level what they brought that day. That's where the storage unit is now. Also the driveway got re-located where it came in next to the house. That's a drop in the bucket of what it's been used for. It makes a great crane too! Thank You for the neat comment, Jeff

    i know how expensive heavy equipment parts costs. i'd surprised to find out if it was cheaper to restore something this ruined than to get something used but less damaged. on the bright side, you have a virtually brand new machine. i can only guess... $30,000~ in parts to fully restore, depending on how much needed replacing.

      Really! That's pretty cool. Running the backhoe reminds me of playing a guitar. The first day of running it I don't think I was any better at days end than when I started. It takes time to get to where ya can make it flow! Makes one really appreciate when you see a smooth operator.

      Thanks Winnie s. Ive always been interested in the automotive industry & building things. Years back people brought me things to fix at night. Then it turned into a business. I use to do more body work than mechanical/electrical until the 90's where fuel injection had become widely used in the automotive industry & need of servicing. Now I diagnose late model electronics in cars, repair them and perform mechanical services too.

    Good day Sir, Nice to see you restoring an old 580, I have two old units my self! I noticed your unit's not so old after watching, simply burnt. Question, Did you happen to re build any of your rams? if so are you using a standard Gland wrench or a custom one? if so/ or not. I have an idea or design that might fit your skills and tools available to you! The objective is to have a Gland wrench that will fit snug in the gland without the possibility of slipping out when trying to loosen/tighten the gland nut! my idea is like a chain pipe wrench or vice grip that snugly holds the cylinder while it's also holding the gland wrench snugly in place so you can break it free or snug it up... I've designed two types of tools that would work grand, but not having the sours to build it! Perhaps you could make the tool and perhaps give it a try. If it works well. I could buy one from you!!! With your sharp mind I feel you'll picture my idea easily! Hope to hear from you!!!

      Hello friend! Really enjoy when folks say where their from. I enjoy how this YT thing brings people together from all over the world. That was the girlfriend for many years. She still stops in periodically to say hi and at times has a car question or need a repair. Even brings lunch at times. ;>) Dad stopped in when the tractor first arrived. He kept walking around it and asking - will it run? He was very good with wood and not vehicle stuff. So funny to see how concerned he looked. I would like to thank you for stopping by and taking time to comment, - and sub! Jeff.

    • @bl0ckbust3r
      @bl0ckbust3r 6 років тому

      That's what I really like about YT, too. There are so many people in this world who have great ideas and really good ways to create videos to help others with something. And it is irrelevant where they are from. But filming it and put it on YT is a lot of work. Takes a lot of time to repair your stuff when you have to film it ...and then comes theediting. So thank you for your great ideas in your videos. Looking forward for other great DIY videos of you.

    Great job Jeff! I just bought a 92' model case 480F LL that has 8400 hrs. It's in descent shape but needs some work done to it. The parking brake doesn't work, the right brake doesn't work, the instrument cluster and housing needs to be replaced, most of the gauges don't work, needs some pins and bushings Etc Etc I could on and on. I started pricing some the parts online and found that they are extremely high priced. If you don't mind me asking where did find parts at reasonable prices?

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  8 років тому

      +Brian T. Noland Most of the parts were dealer only. IF - you are going to be buying a lot of parts (sounds like it) the dealer gave me an additional 5 percent off which does add up. Every Thursday they got a normal stock order shipment in where then there is no shipping charge then. The hoses were all made at an automotive store which had the fittings and end crimp equipment. the belt and hoses, some lights etc were from auto store, much less too. Friend got me a super deal on the tire store. Unfortunately the things you named are probably dealer only. I'm sure things went up quite a bit since I've done mine but hope this helps you out a bit Brian, Jeff

      2jeffs1 Hi there Jeff, I hope you’re doing well! It’s been 2 years since this post and the tractor (480F) was doing great until the other day. We were moving it from one job to another and had drive it on the road for several miles. By the time we got to the other job the transmission was smoking and at one point locked up in the middle of the road. We finally got it freed up enough to move it off the road. While doing so the front tires going backward when the back tires were going forward. Something must have broke in the either the transfer case or the transmission. Have you ever rebuilt one these transmissions or transfer cases? If so are they difficult to rebuild?
