- 06-11-2006 VIDEO at 0:59 Takeoff, 4:14, 4:39, 6:43, 6:50 Landing. This is the only flying Piasecki (Vertol) H-21B Shawnee 'Flying Banana' in the world and it was an awesome experience to fly in this major piece of history. My friend Wayne Frank & I flew in this 1957 Piasecki H-21B Shawnee 'Flying Banana' N64606 from the Van Nuys Airport Airshow south down the coast to the Ramona Airport in Ramona, San Diego County, California.

The Piasecki H-21 Workhorse/Shawnee is an American helicopter, the fourth of a line of tandem rotor helicopters designed and built by Piasecki Helicopter (later Boeing Vertol). Commonly called "the flying banana", it was a multi-mission helicopter, utilizing wheels, skis, or floats. The H-21 was originally developed by Piasecki as an Arctic rescue helicopter. The H-21 had winterization features permitting operation at temperatures as low as −65 °F (−54 °C), and could be routinely maintained in severe cold weather environments.
Thank you! I crewed the CH-46 and your photos really illustrate the evolution of the "Flying Bananas", i.e. the drive shaft tunnel (flipped from inside to out side) and the fuel tanks (drop tank- style into stub wings). So many things are similar, the general cabin and mechanical layout and location of the avionics and flight control closets. I think the -47, as the ultimate "Flying Banana" is arranged the same way.
I flew in one of these as a radio operator 1956. The radio's were right across from the side door. 54th Air Rescue Squadron, Goose Bay, Labrador. I was a crew member mainly on the SA-16 Albatross. We had 6 of them, one H-21, 5 H-19's.
Thank you for the always excellent presentations! USAF (1968-1972).
Awesome!
Nice PowerPoint with diamond to the center transitions. It's a shame it's not a video.
So cool ride!!
This is awesome. I saw this helicopter at the chino airshow about 5 years ago
Saw a U.S Marine Pilot perform a Loop with a deskined 21 at O & R Lakehurst back in the Fifties, it blew my mind, about 60 feet off the ground.
That looks like a great ride!
Nice to see this preserved...! Never rode in one, just the UH-1B gunships and the later models plus a few shithooks. Think I like having 2 rotors better than 1.
had a few rides in the 'Nam in these, 1966-7, hauled an engine for a H34 in one to change it out in the field after a forced landing due to enemy fire, from KyHa
The flying banana love it old but still in the AIR
AN ICONIC HELICOPTER!GREAT!

i believe this the last airworthy h-21 b or a boeing vertol 44a flying banana its powered by a Wright Cyclone 9 R-1820 nine cylinder radial engine. was made in the day before turbine engines are the standard as they are lighter than radial engines and have more hp to weight ratio. two other examples of helicopters that have radial engines are the Sikorsky s-55 H-19 Chickasaw, and the Sikorsky s-58 h-34 Choctaw. the army currently replaced the h-21b with the ch-47 chinook more going twords the tilt rotor Bell/Boeing Osprey.
I’m really hungry gimme gimme gimme a banana
For what is this funny big hole in the rear section of the helicopter?
Какой он, оказывается, маленький, "Бананчик"
I can not for the life of me understand why anyone would volunteer to sit in that webbing makes me hurt just remembering!?
