Why was the CH-21 Shawnee designed with such a banana shape? The Flying Banana

The H-21 was fairly early tandem-rotor helicopter from the 1950s. Its unusual shape made it known as "the flying banana". And designed for a purpose.

Still one of my favourite helicopters. Unfortunately one of the last underpowered helicopters. Our neighbour country used these for troop transport i saw them for the first time as a teenager in the museum in west Germany.
