  • Thanks for joining me on a day session Pike fishing with deadbait. The river was in flood and so I moved onto the local stillwater to catch a few Pike. Deadbaits are a fantastic way to catch Pike and it was a rather nice break from the lure fishing.

    I remember reading a blog you had written a few years ago now about your first twenty pound pike from the ouse and being from huntingdon my self it really inspired me that there was a few giants left in the Ouse, managed to catch my first twenty from the river in December which was a huge buzz for me, loving the content, cant wait for the next one👍

    Really enjoyed the video, l have fished for Pike now for about 50 years but about 80% has been with lures but l do enjoy deadbaiting now as lm knocking on now and a days lureing with heavy lures really takes it out of me, one thing that might help you, when lm deadbaiting on the end of the line l tie on a Genie link clip then attach my trace to the clip to allow quick trace changes without having to retie the knot, these clips are much slimmer than a link swivel and very strong, look forward to more videos.

      clooper man thanks for watching. Good tip too. Clips also mean you can take the traces off when you’re in transit. I do a lot of lure fishing and it was quite nice to have a bit of a sit down! I must be getting old too!! 😂 Thanks for watching!!! 👍🎣

    Great video. I would, though, recommend hooking your deadbaits slightly differently - the upper treble should go in the tail root of the bait and the bottom treble should go in the flank. The reason for this is because once a pike has picked up the bait, it will turn it and try to swallow it head-first. With your way of hooking deads, that could lead to a deep-hooked pike which nobody wants as it can ultimately damage the pike. Hope this helps.

      Tim Bailey yes someone else said the same. I’m not teaching, I’m sharing ... there’s a difference. I’m definitely starting to get great comments like this to help me improve my own fishing... so thank you! I’m going to make sure I cover this in a future video. Thanks again! 👍🎣

      No, I totally get it. You’re the second person to mention this. Although I’ve never had a problem with deep hooking, I’m definitely going to adapt my fishing. This might be because I only fish for pike in winter but I can possibly see it being a problem if your suggestion isn’t practised in spring or as it gets warmer! Fish care comes first. Thanks again 👍

      Great video indeed! Nowadays I don't use the treble hook in the tail anymore, I replaced this with a small tie wrap around the tail. So basically only one treble hook that comes in the flank to prevent damaging the fish unnecessarily. I still catch my pike with one treble hook without the pike swallowing the deadbait too far. great video, awesome fish! I see lots of pike anglers attaching their trace straight onto the mainline which is fine but you'd be amazed at how much handier it is to tie on a strong snap swivel instead. simply clip on your trace, not only is it great to take off the trace when unhooking a fish because you can take the rod and everything out of the way, when your finished a session the only thing you need to take off is your trace and can pack away the rods for a quick set up next time, small thing that comes in handy, Tight lines.

    little tip for checking if a pike has taken the bait...lift the rod up but trap the line with your finger against the spool (bail arm still open), apply very slight pressure and you should be able to feel the pike either running or mouthing the bait, obviously if its running, then let the line peel away between your finger and spool but not for too long as you are only checking to see if a pike has it in its mouth not to gobble it down. Works every time and no more striking into thin air and giving them a free deadbait when you strike it off. Regards. Great vid BTW

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому +1

      Yes. You can see the line coming off the spool in my video. I was watching the line on the water. I'd have noticed sooner if I'd just looked at the spool OR do exactly as you've suggested here. Thanks, I'll try that next time I'm out!

    Tip for ya, put the deadbaits that you are going to use in a cool bag the night before, so for example 3 roach , 2 sardines and 2 smelts, therefore this ensures that you are not thawing out dead baits that you might not use, it always means that you are fishing with a fresh bait, it’s not good to freeze and refreeze. You end up with mushy baits, great video by the way really enjoyed watching it. Keep catching them crocks 🐊🐊🐊

    Hi mate, enjoyed the video! I have a question. I'm new to Pike fishing and I'm going next week for the first time (deadbaiting, spinning isn't permitted).
    It's quite a large quarry pit with huge drop offs in the middle. Would you recommend down the margins or in the deeper water? Two rods so I will try both but this time of year what do you think is going to be the most fruitful? Cheers!

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  3 роки тому

      Sonikks If it’s mild then down the edge if you’ve got reasonable depth. If it’s cooler the out in the middle. Definitely try both though. I tend to move my rods around every 45mins - 1hr to try and find them! Good luck! 👍

    Hi, great video! I have a few questions if you could answer please:
    1. What kind of a rod you are using for casting the dead bait? Is it a carp rod?
    2. What is your experience on what bait gives better results live or dead? When should they be used: summer, winter...? Whats better dead bait saltwater or freshwater?
    3. Do you make your own twin treble trace?

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому

      Dejan Popovski thanks!
      1. I currently use carp rods but looking to upgrade to Korum Snapper rods which will handle casting dead baits better.
      2. I mainly fish for pike in the winter. I don’t use live bait for pike. I also do not recommend fishing for pike in summer as they engulf baits too readily which leads to deep hooking. If you do want to fish for them in warmer conditions then I would suggest lure fishing.
      3. I don’t make my own traces although I do modify them sometimes to pop baits up.
      I hope that helps!

    i have found that you should not strike on the first run of the pike but strike on the second run. My reasoning for this is that the pike first just picks up the bait sideways then stops and turns the bait so it can swallow it head first that is when you strike into the pike.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  3 роки тому

      I would be quite careful with that approach in mild or warm conditions. In fact, I would be concerned about even doing this in winter. You’re at risk of deep hooking the pike. Have you not experienced this?

      I fish Lea Valley and I couldn't find any pits on day ticket. Some clubs offer multiple pits membership if you want to "Google" it. See link with prices below.

      I tend to use braid these days. Pike Pro stuff in 50lb+. Means I can straighten out trebles if I get snagged. 👍

    I am looking to fish at a lake that’s very weedy have you got any tip?

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  2 роки тому

      It should die off a bit as we go into winter. You could drift a deadbait over it if there’s still some around. Or work lures kid water without letting them drop into the weed?

    Do you recomend wearing a glove with these beasts? Nice vid.

      Thanks! I sometimes wear one but they’re not essential. I’ve unhooked loads of pike without one.

    What are the start up costs to start like fishing rods reels bite Alarms rod rests small tackle

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому

      If you are going to start up fishing then I don't actually think that Pike fishing is a good place to start. Maybe just buy a single rod and reel, forget the bite alarms and try a bit of float fishing or feeder fishing for either tench or carp. You can then see if you enjoy it without spending a fortune.

      Addictedtoherb if you’re just getting back into it have you considered lure fishing for pike? A lot less gear to buy and an excellent way to catch them! Thanks for watching!! 👍

      Roy Jeffery generally the bigger pike are female, I know that much! How else can you tell out of interest?

    • @royjeffery6965
      @royjeffery6965 4 роки тому

      @@Lifeonthebank male pike go up to about 8 lb. Anything above that is female. But how you can tell if you have a record male is beyond me 😀 but its very likely its a female.
