I love the break down of 3 levels of skill. Level 3 makes more sense when you look at what the first 2 levels entail. It gives you a clear sense of progression.
Great video. I have been playing jazz for years, but often get intimidated by the, for lack of a better word, Middle-East inspired tunes (like this and Caravan) that have become associated with altered scales and more advanced theory. Your tutorial broke things down in an approachable way that I will try tonight at my gig. I also enjoyed your presentation: superimposing notes and scales over video for clarity. Nice work, excellent communication skills, Tim!
This video is really helpful, recently I started to hang out with a jazzist saxophonist and he asked me to play a bass solo for this tune and I always tend to use pentatonics because my jazz language is still low. Now I have a whole variety of sounds ideas and licks
Hey man, thanks a lot! great video, very clear and no time wasted at all. I knew the melodic scale but didnt know it was the same as the altered one, awesome tip right there! Saludos desde Argentina.
Thank u, that was eye opening. I am a classic trumpet student, so any suggestions where to start my journey in jazz? Again my appreciation for this eloquent video.
@TimCollinsVibes Thanks Tim. I am liking the approach concepts visual sequencing on Vibe board even though my primary instrument is guitar . Didn't take long to realize the upper row is like black keys on the piano
Super helpful video. I am swimming in the chord theory. This gives me a good idea though on several ways to improvise this piece and multiple levels. Love it.
Great stuff, Tim. I'd just been discovering some of the stuff you were explaining from a symetrical stand point. Your clear explanation levels are bringing it all together. Thank-you. By the way, I jus subscribed.
I can’t go back to school. I haven’t touched a vibe since like March. But we move. I Lo-key forgot how to read music. Yoo and thx also because last year I was rated top 20 jazz vibraphonist in the state of GA
I very much identify with the feeling but definitely not a top rated player! gratz and ive been (kinda) filling the void with trying to work on my keyboard skills and improving over chord changes in my left hand
@@MrFrosty1997 same. I have a keybord too but the pass few months I've been doing a lot of work on my drumset. I could barley do sports this year so it was mostly Drums.
Tim ima guitar player and this is the best anyone has ever approached this - I have people telling me play a Bbmaj scale to the Dm and a Bmaj scale to the Eb7 . A lot of people just play the solo in Dm with some D harmonic minor stuff . I love the way you play it and I notice that I have been playing gutiar so long and you just made the simple blues scale sound better than i ever could and its like should I just quit now ?
So, I'm a beginning jazz guitar player. Even though I think I was born to be a crappy vibes player, I'm a crappy guitar player. Anywho, I've listened to so many UA-cam videos on how to solo and this was by far one of if not the best. Not sure why, it just really resonated will you be doing more of these? Would you like some song suggestions?
Thanks! I will do more of these for sure at some point. I’m also working on a full online course as well, but once it’s done I’ll get back to more stuff like this.
Hi man, never say you’re a crappy player even if you’re joking..we all are taking the same journey, there’s always people before you and behind you so just enjoy the ride

Thanks - FYI Caravan is more about harmonic minor than altered dominant.
Exceptional teaching. I'm a classically trained percussionist with a set of vibes.. This is helping me get my jazz footing.
Out of all of the ways I have had teachers approach imrpov, this has BY FAR been the most influential on my playing. Thanks

Your unreal Tim. Thanks so much for the video
the eb is a tri tone off the dom7 and works with A alt I didn't see that at first
These are some really GREAT sequencing concepts .
Yes exactly - the Eb is a tritone sub of A7.. it’s basically V-i over and over.
@TimCollinsVibes Thanks Tim. I am liking the approach concepts visual sequencing on Vibe board even though my primary instrument is guitar . Didn't take long to realize the upper row is like black keys on the piano
