Especially for the younger generations who didn’t get to see them racing back in the days. It’s also a great comparison to the current prototype cars to see how far they’ve come in development and technology.
@FriendlyCroock Yes. Though Canam takes the cake for unregulated madness, which was open cockpit. So many engineering techniques for speed were pioneered and refined in those races. It's a shame the series ended, however the goal of a competition is to find a winner.

I see that 962 qualified w/ a blistering 2:09x lap time. I was wondering and maybe you would know. Has any group C or historic car ran a faster lap at Spa than Bob Berridge's 2:05x in the c11 way back when? Theres a onboard of it on youtube somewhere.

Sure, it was extremely dangerous but these classes with virtually no limits showcased innovation and ingenuity like nothing before or since!!

Question: a few of the cars racing here at least appear to be a slightly-smaller chassis, and less powerful (though that could be about the age of the cars and/or skill of the drivers) - was there a sub-class akin to IMSA's "Camel Lights" cars in FIA?

Expensive hobby...I mean these guys don't have factory backing or big sponsers, so...If they crash one of these works of art they will cost a breathtaking amount of money to rebuild. Anyway its great to see and hear them again. I saw the 1989 IMSA GTP race at Topeka, and this reminds me of that weekend.
If they broadcasted these races I'd watch every second of them. I'd love to see some of the LMP2 and classic prototypes mix it up with classic group C as well.
Group-C (I include there also the Jag XJR14 and Peugeot 905 1991/92 though it's not 100% correct), the best prototype era... so much different sounds, so much different car shapes and engine solutions... and: the Group-C was an eco formula, ahead the time...have a limited amount of fuel for the distance, and how you handle that, it's on you... worked fine without hitech like fuelmeters, torq sensors and millions of telemetry data

These cars really were a different breed. For me, Formula One wasn't the pinnacle of motorsport technology in the 80s, these things were. So many modern engines, supercar engines, are derivetives of these engines that they ran in Group C. V8s, V10s, V12s, Porsche Flat 6s and Rotary Mazdas, both naturally aspirated and forced induction. Group C really was insane and sadly, largely forgotten amongst most people, even some that are into motorsport. In my opinion, I think Group C should garner the same amount of wonder and admiration that Group B rallying gets.

Yes, there was a "smaller" class in Group C. You had C1 for the fastest cars and C2 for the slower and less powerfull cars. A bit like lmp1 and lmp2.
