If there wasn't enough petrol for the tractors, the people starved even worse. You were little, you didn't know, but the grownups were talking about it in secret.
I am currently writing a dictatorship and this does help, since I am aiming to have a dictatorship which puts effort into the well-being of the people without it being too soft. The only rule the dictator doesn't really follow is bribing rivals, but he has the advantage that his dictatorship has made genuine improvements in the quality of life, so any dissidents usually end up being killed by lynch mobs due to how most people of the country see speaking against the dictator as saying "You peasants need to go back to your slums and back to eating one meal a day!"
People always choose security over freedom. If there are no threats allow them to happen or create one. For example If you have an intel about a terorist attack allow it to happen, after that promise people to deal with this situation then increase your power by passing necessary laws. Thanks to the 21 years of Erdogan Regime, I have studied dictatorship very closely :')
I am currently keeping this in mind with a dictatorship I am writing. With the dictatorship, despite it getting to power via a militant group overthrowing a democracy, it is popular, simply because the dictatorship brought security and guaranteed each citizen a roof over their head, food on their plate and a full set of clothes, as well as improving literacy.
Well Stalin had no "heroic" titles, since he was forced exile in Siberia back at the war, he gained power by a pure masterpiece of political machination (and that's why he had no trust in the military, they were Trotsky products). For the nazis, yes, it was clearly a Starship citizen type of dictature, a dictature of veterans (Himmler was mocked by the others for not having done the war). The "Robin Wood" is quiet interesting: today we know that the nazis didn't actually heal the economy, they took profit from the effect of the last economical politics of the Weimar Rep ; so I guess we can add an other one: "Take profit, all the profits, from anyone: all goods come from you, all bad come from the others". Since these kind of things are my passion I could have an hundred such anecdote x)
An effective leader/dictator must do the following: 1. Sway supporters to their side 2. Take tight control over security and enforcement. Control as many resources as you can, ensure that operations cannot continue without your support. 3. Of the people that are essential for you to maintain your position find potential replacements for them so that you depend upon as few people as possible. In management the first thing a manager should do is cross train and rotate their staff. It will make their staff less likely to burn out and more importantly it makes each worker easier to replace. The same general idea should apply to any dictatorship as well. 4. Train people and create systems to get things done efficiently. Plan for long term growth, because when resources run out so does your time as a manager/dictator. If there are no resources, there is no way to pay for anything. As a manager that means your division might get downsized, as a dictator that means that you might be executed in a regime change. Almost every leadership position will generally follow the rules above. I would highly recommend reading The Dictator's Handbook by DeMesquita. It should be required reading for anyone that plans to be in any kind of leadership position at all. The video The Rules for Rulers by CGP Gray was also well done.

The thing about Hitler though is that he used to be impatient. Still a fairly unknown figure at the time, he and some members of his party committed the Beerhall Putsch in 1923, which failed. This speaks to what you said about patience but Hitler was not the mastermind of how to become a dictator in five steps. An emerging dictator needs those: economic and social uncertainty, widespread anti-establishment sentiments and either contacts to political leaders and/or a personal brand that resonates with the disaffected public. Then grind your way up or wait for the right time to do the coup. Having the military at your side is usually a guaranteed success.
