      Yeah it was really nice actually and I’ve seen nice 70s SGs in that colour. But tradition got the better of me…

    You have to work around them but I like to use the foamy ear plugs to keep the threads clean. Get the ones with the string, cut the string, leave about an inch long.

    That looks lovely after the sealer. I’d be tempted to clear coat over that, as I love the walnut colour.

    I did a Les Paul Junior in Cherry Red about 20-25 years ago, but I used Zar Dark Mahogany stain, which I'm not even sure is available anymore, but it really made the red pop. I like the effect of the walnut stain you used a lot though.

    • @BeardsworthGuitars
      @BeardsworthGuitars  6 місяців тому

      Oh yeah that would be lovely. I’d imagine it would enhance the deep reds? I need to re-finish the neck on my 1990 Les Paul Classic at some stage so will do some further experimenting then. I also have another cherry burst Les Paul awaiting a neck repair and re-finish!

    Great video. Quick question. What was the flash time between coats?
    Thanks

    • @BeardsworthGuitars
      @BeardsworthGuitars  6 місяців тому

      Thanks very much! I try to leave 2 hours between coats. It will be dry to the touch way before then but the paint will continue to release VOCs and if you trap these by spraying the next coat prematurely you risk getting solvent pop. Hope that helps!

  • @gott2585

    May I ask, why did you leave the bridge bushings on the guitar during entire sanding/painting process?

    • @BeardsworthGuitars
      @BeardsworthGuitars  6 місяців тому

      Great question. I touched on it briefly in the first video but in short, I usually extract them by screwing in the stop tail post and carefully leveraging them out. However, I didn’t have any posts on hand during this build. Given the studs were sitting slightly below the surface, I was able instead to just tape them off to avoid painting them, and not touch them when sanding. Hope that helps!

    What's the fewest number of coats you could spray on? I'm about to do my SG special and I want the finish to be as thin as possible so that it will age more rapidly.

    • @BeardsworthGuitars
      @BeardsworthGuitars  6 місяців тому +2

      Hey, well there are a few things to consider here. Working on the assumption you want the paint to look glossy and level, and are just after premature checking and wear through of the paint, then you could do what Fender does with their Thin Skin finishes and seal the body with a polyester sealer, sand that good and flat, and then spray the colour coats on there. The stronger in colour you make the tinted lacquer, the fewer coats you need. So my advice would be to just spray until you have built the colour up sufficiently for your needs. Then spray maybe 4 coats of clear to give yourself enough thickness to sand / buff as desired. If you don’t use clear you run the risk of uneven colour because the sanding process will likely take off more paint in places like the edges.
      In terms of how many coats, this depends on a number of factors such as fluid tip size on your gun, how much you thin the paint, how heavy you spray the coats, and how much you have to sand back to remove imperfections. So, while I can’t give you an accurate answer to this, I will say that the key to a thin finish is fastidious preparation. Hope that helps!

    Hi! I'm on a sg junior project. I just finished the grain filler. Turn out great! Now I wonder to stain it like you or not. I'm scared to stain it and have an uneven stain with darker spots. I read that sanding sealer should be used BEFORE stain to have a nice stain. But you do the opposit right?

    • @BeardsworthGuitars
      @BeardsworthGuitars  5 місяців тому +1

      Sounds like a cool project! If you apply stain after sealing you won’t stain the wood because it’s protected by the sealer. I’m not sure how well stain would work over sealer. The key to avoiding blotches is good sanding (240 grit is sufficient), diluting the stain so you can build the colour up gradually, apply it reservedly - don’t slosh it on, and finally make sure you pre-treat any areas of end-grain with water or whatever you’re diluting the stain with. This stops those areas from absorbing so much of the stain which will give you dark or blotchy areas. Hope that helps!

    • @oliviermilani3949
      @oliviermilani3949 5 місяців тому

      @@BeardsworthGuitars thank you for your answer. So you mean if i diluted the stain with water, i should put just water before on the end grain area and then stain? I'm so scared to ruin it. I did already an sg project but i want like you said a more brownish cherry, more vintage than my classic cherry that i did...

    • @1983Beardo
      @1983Beardo 5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah exactly. Just apply the water like you would the stain. Doesn’t need to be soaked. Just wiped over. The great thing with stain is that it doesn’t tend to go deep if you pre-treat the end grain, so if you’re not happy just wait for it to dry, sand it back and go again. But also test your stain on a piece of scrap so you can get a sense of how strong to make it. No harm in making it more dilute and building up the colour with a few applications. More likely to get an even result this way.

    I wish i had seen this a month ago. I diddnt use sanding sealer as the brand i got was lumpy and not very transparent so i went straight to lacquer. Ruined the whole thing. Ive jad to rub it right back. :'(
    What brand sanding sealer did you use?

    • @BeardsworthGuitars
      @BeardsworthGuitars  6 місяців тому

      Oh what a nightmare! Don’t let UA-cam fool you though - almost every job goes horribly wrong at some stage. Experience comes from failure, as they say!
      I use Mirotone’s MIROCAT sanding sealer. It smells dreadful but goes on beautifully and sands like a dream.

      Mirotone are based here in Melbourne but I’m sure there will be equivalents in the UK. I’m going to investigate polyester sanding sealer soon as this seems to be the go-to for many of the big players including Fender and PRS before they switched over to Nitro over CAB
