Great video! I appreciate that you got straight to the point, didn't use crazy editing or loud music, etc., but just showed us how to do it. Thanks very much!
Thanks Man!!!! The aluminum siding I have is chalking like mad. I knew it would take a pressure washing, some scrubbing and a good primer. You commented TSP and Gripper by PPG and that is the combo I needed to hear. Home Depot has the PPG Gripper in 5 gallon pails plus 16 pound bags of Sunnyside TSP. They will deliver to your home for free if you buy online. :-D
My house - built in the 50s - has aluminum siding and I will need to power wash it before I can paint it. Thank you so much for telling us what product you used for priming. I've been putting off painting for so long, for fear of the paint peeling off after I put so much work into it. Your video has given me some confidence. I will need to buy a taller ladder, so thanks for the tip about putting the mitts on it so as not to scratch or damage the siding, too.
How did your house painting turn out Amelia? I moved into a 1963 home this year, it has about half of it’s original aluminum siding (half newer vinyl). I’m painting the wooden trim in the very near future and likely I will paint the aluminum siding in the spring. I already power washed it.
@@Ethan.s.. It turned out pretty good, but now that a year has passed I see some thin spots I'll need to touch up. Plus, I need to builid some shutters to replace the plastic ones I took down. It was a good idea to do the primer first, because I don't think my house had ever been painted and it had yellowed.
Bought a 28 foot ladder with mitts I will put on.Have a colonial house with a full walk up attic.Tall house.Have yet to try this ladder against the Aluminum siding.
Best video so far.👍 Our house looks almost identical to the condition here. Been washing and scraping and hope to finish today. I bought a cheap ol electric sprayer, hope it does the job. If not I reckon I'll be rolling away. All the paint shops talk about latex. I'm assuming it's acrylic latex since you mentioned mixing it with water. Its been 40 years since I did any painting and my memory only goes back about 12 hours. I like that you mentioned ppg. They're the people I've been leaning to for paint. They have really good reviews and can tell you what you need to know instead of saying go read the bucket. Thanks for mentioning that gripper stuff and again, very well done on the vid.
Hey Michael Thanks for stopping by the channel The gripper will do a good job sticking to the aluminum just make sure it is clean. Hope it turns out great
Hi, would you guys recommend more than 1 coat of paint and primer. Or is 1 coat more than enough, I would really like this to last. And thanks for being so helpful in the comments, rarely do you see guys not only sharing their "secrets" and telling people what's good to get, but it's even rarer to see people replying to comments and trying to help out. Our house has looked like this for years, mainly because we expected to be way too expensive and we wouldn't be able to do it ourselves. Hopefully we'll be able to after watching this. You seem like great people, and I wish you all the best.
Hey 10-20 one coat of primmer and one coat of paint should work well and last a good long time. That does not mean it wont get dirty and need repainted or touched up in a few yrs. If you do it right the first time the up-keep should not be that hard. Hope this helps Have a great week led
This is a very good video! Your primer, application, and final coating recommendations are spot on and demonstrated very well. I'll be using your suggestions on an exterior aluminum siding project soon. One of the best channels on UA-cam for this sort of subject. Thanks for the care you put into this!
A combination of tsp, water, bleach..a good soft brush to remove the chaulk residue..then hose down the house, wait a day. Then prime. 2 coats of finish JM0
Can you post links to the paint gun and air supply!!? I read the comments about the paint and primer - copy that. First time home owner with the exact same siding. I want to do this in the Spring. Looking to get the same result as in the video - good aluminum siding, just needs new paint because it looks faded just like that!
Hey John the primmer is called ( Gripper) it is sold by PPG. The sprayer is a Graco 495 airless sprayer we are using a Rac 10 410 fine finish tip in the gun.
Hey Mike we shield where necessary but when spraying the gutters the angle at which we spray simply deflects it away from the roof. This was so satisfying to watch. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m about to tackle a similar project on a ranch slightly larger than this with an attached oversized one car garage. You give me hope I can accomplish this! Do you happen to remember how many gallons it took you from start to finish?
Hey E Im thinking it took around 10 gallons of primer and 10 of finish. I would say start off with less then you think so you dont over buy and get a few gallons as you need them . good luck with your project I hope it turns out great led
Guys, great video! Very good quality work. Wished you lived in my town-I’d give you a call. When you have two colors (trim verses base), in what order do you paint those? Do you spray finish all the trim pieces first (soffits, gutters), then mask those and paint the base house color? Thanks so much!
Hey Perry a lot of times when there are two colors we do the siding first and then the trim. It really depends on the house and the products its made out of. Either way works it just what you prefer as a painter. Thanks for stopping by the channel hope you have a great weekend led
Hey Growing Groceries The new acrylic paints we use will stay on aluminum for many yrs and probably never come off, but it will fade and possibly get dirty especially in high trafic areas. So to keep it looking nice you will need to paint occasionally. It may be 3 to 5 yrs or it may go longer. My house is a total paint job on the exterior and i have to maintenance it every few yrs to keep it nice. Thanks for stopping by the channel hope you have a great weekend led
💥 3:05 the ladder is way too steep here. The problem is, at that angle when you get to the top, the bottom, wants to kick out and slide away from the house and being over that window, imagine the nightmare that would occur when you’re on the top of the ladder going through that pane of glass. 40 years on a ladder, sometimes 26 or more feet up and never an incident and I wish it on no one.
Hey legit the sprayer is an airless sprayer it does not use a compressor it uses a piston pump which forces the paint out of the tip. it is what i use on most of my big jobs. thanks for stopping by the channel and i hope you have a great week led
What kind of machine did you use to spray ? Should you always primer ? What kind of paint did you use ? I know you mentioned these things but just wanted it in words. I sure would appreciate it. Very good video.
Very good video!!... this will be my fall project. Don't let the photo full you lol ... I do have a question hopefully someone can answer. I noticed when you were painting the top of the house around the soffits and fascia, you didn't cover the roof shingles. Will any paint get on the roof at all? I noticed the spray going over but didn't see any paint on the roof when you were done. Thanks again!!
Hey Carlos as long as you dont hold the gun directly towards your roofing you wont have any problems . In the summer heat the little overspray there is dries almost instantly and is just dust. It simply blows away.
Hi Led, Thanks for informative video! Do you recommend power washing aluminum or brushing it clean (house built in 1940, second owner purchased in 1969 and siding old, discolored and chalky and a dose of mold/mildew)? Also does Gripper need to cure before applying paint? I’m thinking of painting the white siding a Gray Flannel color - should I get the Gripper tinted (if it can be)? As others have commented, sure wish my house was near you because I’d hire you! Thanks again for your comments.
Hey Cherie I like using a good cleaner and a scrub brush to clean siding and rinse with a water hose. As far as the gripper it needs to have 24 hours before you top coat. Hope this helps good luck on your project and have a great week led
What tip should I use for painting aluminum fascia and soffit? What tip did you use for the siding? With flat paint how considered should I be with lap marks?
Great job!! I want to paint my old aluminum siding as well. Could you tell me what compressor & sprayer you used please? I have a cape cod style house about the same size. I dont think I can afford a company to do it, but I think I can cover the equipment and supplies and do it ourselves (especially since I can use the equipment for other stuff). Thank you in advance 😎
About 5 minutes into the video I talk about the type of sprayer I'm using. It's an airless sprayer it will run you over 4k to buy one. It would be cheaper to hire a contractor for a job that small. Either way good luck with your house I hope it turns out great.
Hey JP mildew is a tough one. It normally comes back no mater what you do so i wash the exterior of my house every year with a bleach and water mix. There are several other detergents out there that will work. Its just something home owners have to deal with especially if you have vinyl siding, the petroleum in it just attracts mold. There is just no permanent fix. I hope this helps and I hope you have a great week. Thanks for stopping by the channel led
Hey Ray for this house I think I'm using a 410. You could use a wider tip if you like. The 410 for me is perfect to cover one whole piece with just a little overlap.
Hello I appreciate your recommendations. Do you know anyone in Baltimore Maryland that could do this type of work and have the same technique that you have?
Hey tee bee Im from the Cincinnati area so i really dont know anybody in your area. Your local paint store should be able to recommend a good painter for you. Hope this helps Good luck with your house and have a great week led
im not able to get your recommended PPG acrishield as an individual. What are your thoughts on conco paints brand. (sold by menards) they offer both 100% acrylic paint and 100% acrylic primer. I'm going with bright white, what are your thoughts on semi gloss or satin?
Looks great! You mentioned PPG Gripper primer. What kind paint did you use as the final coat? Is it something for aluminum? I have a huge aluminum picnic table in mint condition It’s a bright red right now and I want to paint it a more subdued color but need it to hold up to the weather. I was so happy I stumbled on your video. I’ve only seen spray primers in a can posted and really not impressed with the results. Any suggestions on a type of paint. It will be table top and the 2 bench seats getting painted. Thanks so much!
Hey Lisa Thanks for stopping by the channel. Table tops and bench seat can be tricky . The paint i used on this house is an acrylic . The reason for acrylic is for its ability to flex as the house flexes. For something you are going to be using and setting items you may need to move over to an oil paint . It will be much harder and can take the abuse of sliding plates or bowels or whatever. Now using oil may need to be touched up every now and then because the aluminum table may flex with the weather and cause it to pop off in spots. So a little touch up may be needed at times. I hope this helps in getting your table finished thanks again for stopping by the channel and I hope you have a great week led
Hey, nice job. Question, if the old paint is flaking and you want to remove it, any suggestions on how to do that without flakes flying everywhere. I thought of powerwashing but flakes were flying and it wasn't getting paint off consistently. I don't want to paint over any flakes and want to ensure the finish isn't uneven. Thx.
Hey Gary Power washing does work but is super messy and water will be everywhere. I try to hand prep with scrapers/putty knives and wire brushes when i can. Pending on the condition of the house its hard to get all the loose off. Just get as much as you can and let the paint do the rest. Make sure to use a good Primmer and it should turn out great . Hey thanks for stopping by the channel I hope your project turns out fantastic and have a great rest of your week led
@@led8541 I'm most concerned about paint flakes going everywhere and for the flakes I don't get off with powerwashing I would be applying paint on top of those flakes and that isn't good. :(
Hey Ben for brick I only use Shirwin Williams (Lox On XP) 2 coats . for aluminum siding any top line acrylic exterior should work as long as you clean it good and use a good primer such as gripper. Thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
@@AmeliaBlakeMusic Hey Amelia this job took about 8 gallons of primmer and 8 gallons of finish. That included the small one car detached garage . The paint goes a long ways on the aluminum siding . I would say buy 5 gallons to start and get extra as you need so you dont over buy. Thanks for stopping by the chanel good luck with your house and have a great week led
Great video, so acrylic primer and acrylic paint and acrylic top coat if necessary? Is 2 coats of primer needed? Any brand of primer & paint do you recommend?
Do you use gripper for steel siding as well? And for the acrylic top coat do you thin a 5 down with about the same amount of water as you do with gripper?
Hey Brandon gripper will stick to almost anything but steel siding may rust and gripper will not hold rust back. And yes we used about the same amount of water on the top coat. Just remember every product is a little different and does take time to learn how they work and how much to thin them. thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
Hey Potato that is a great question . The overspray is mainly dust once it hits the air. it drys is a split second so we have no problems with overspray with the products we were using that day. NOw there are products that we have to be carfull with and when we use them we take precautions . I should have talked about that in my video . Ill try and remember for the next one because it is super important. thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
Hey Nicolas there is a chance of getting over spray on the roof. If you watch tim as he sprays the edge of the gutter acts like a paint shield , when the spray hits it it is deflected away from the roof and the a split second later it is just dust so it cant hurt or stick to anything . The product you use and the pressure and tip play a big roll in controlling overspray. Hope this helps Thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
Yes. He should of put a drop on the roof or played a shield in the gutter. Spechuly how the wind was pulling the over spray over the gutter and up the roof line
Hey Ruthie thanks for stopping by the channel. The primmer is called gripper. It is sold by ppg it is an amazing product and will stick to just about anything if properly used.
Hey Alexander That is a tough question because all of the different manufacturers have there version of what they call the best. I use a lot of ppg and sherwin williams products and i like some of both. the products in this video the gripper primer and the ppg acri shield top coat are two products that i use every day and i know how they work. Are they the best I think for this job they were the best the house turned out great and im sure it will last for yrs. Thanks for stopping by the channel and i hope you have a great week led
Hey Ben most of the paint stores and or lows/home depo sell a product called TSP (trisodium phosphate) It does a pretty good job of cleaning off aluminum. It will kill plants so wet them good before using it and then rinse them good. Use some serious elbow grease when scrubbing. There are several other siding cleaners available out there. TSP is the one i use the most . You dont have to use a pressure washer , just a bucket and scrub brush will do and then rinse . Hope this helps Let me know how it goes. Have a great week led
@@led8541 Led, Appreciate your quick & helpful reply. Also, my paint is almost all going to come off-it's seems decades old, so how to absorb it, instead of it getting onto plants/driveways (where most will go) and wooden deck in back-are there food big absorbent sheets that are relatively inexpensive (so the paint doesn't soak into driveway/runoff into lawn/street)? Tx again
Hey Ben it is a messy job there really isnt no way to absorb the amount of water that it normally takes to do the job. Plastic may protect your plants and deck but catching the water I dont think is possible. making sure everything is wet in the beginning is probably the best thing you can do. Good luck with it I hope it turns out
Great video, I've got aluminum siding on my bi level home in IL and I was hoping to not use a primer. Is there a primer mix paint for houses ? I don't even know the average cost for this kind of job. Labor , paint , material
Don't use a all in one primer paint on metal I paint metal guard rails at work I have tried all kinds of all in one products nothing works better than a good scrubbing pad use a good metal primer and a good quality paint the nice thing about painting metal is.you don't have paint it very often if you do a great job of preparing the surface and use good primer and paint And clean clean clean with tsp and a scrubbing pad you can get them at dollar tree cheap
@@led8541 Thank you for the feedback. Do you pressure wash the old paint off first? The previous owners did a sloppy job and you can see brush marks, etc. I'd like to repaint with a smooth surface. Whats your thoughts?
@@concertinanickz With the right pressure im sure the old paint will come off . Its just going to make a lot more work but it will look much better if you can get it off. Just be careful with the pressure washer dont damage the house or yourself.

Hey Ray for this house I think I'm using a 410. You could use a wider tip if you like. The 410 for me is perfect to cover one whole piece with just a little overlap.
@@led8541 thank you so much for the information.
How do you spray in between bushes and aluminum?
Hey tweetie most painter will take a rope and tie back the bushes while painting its pretty easy to do.
@@led8541 Thanks so much for replying to my questions!
Hey Jordan as long as it's a good acrylic paint and primer it should work fine. I would use a satin .
Can you “spot” paint aluminum? Not the whole thing, just areas of discoloration?
Hey Claire im a big fan of total prime I never spot prime
Did you mean 140 psi?
no 1400 im using an airless sprayer 1400 is not high for an airless you can easily run 2000 if you want
My house now is old white i would like to paint it light gray. Is that possible?
Absolutely. You can pick any color you would like. Just make sure to clean it well and use a quantity primmer and paint.
Thank you.
You probably don’t recommend I skip the Priming stage I’m guessing ?
Not when it comes to aluminum . the primer is important .
@@garypersonalstuff If its flaking that bad it will take some serious effort to get it all. Let me know how it turns out .
Will ladder mitts prevent dents from ladder on aluminum siding ? I have Aluminum siding on my house.
Hey Potato the answer is Yes . Ladder mitts will protect you aluminim siding. They do a great job.

Does the gripper primer work well on brick? What is the best topcoat paint for aluminum siding and brick
Hey Ben for brick I only use Shirwin Williams (Lox On XP) 2 coats . for aluminum siding any top line acrylic exterior should work as long as you clean it good and use a good primer such as gripper. Thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
@@led8541 How many gallons of acrylic exterior paint did it take to cover this house? My house is similar in size....
What kind of service do I call to have my aluminum siding painted?
If you dont know a painter call your local paint store they can recommend one for you
Great video, so acrylic primer and acrylic paint and acrylic top coat if necessary? Is 2 coats of primer needed? Any brand of primer & paint do you recommend?
Do you use gripper for steel siding as well? And for the acrylic top coat do you thin a 5 down with about the same amount of water as you do with gripper?
Hey Brandon gripper will stick to almost anything but steel siding may rust and gripper will not hold rust back. And yes we used about the same amount of water on the top coat. Just remember every product is a little different and does take time to learn how they work and how much to thin them. thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
I for one and it just me but I'd be wearing a respirator anytime I'm spraying
any advice on masks when spraying?
What is the cost of spray painting this house?Ball park price.
What size tip are you using?
Hey peter im most likely using a 412
Looks great. I also noticed a classic truck sitting across the street. (chevy maybe).
yea that guy keeps it in the garage of the little house i painted it was pretty cool
Hey there new subbie here ... taking notes
Hey Ruthie thanks for the sub I'll be heading over to your channel
No protective wear, no effort to paint under the reveal of each layer of siding (the underside of each reveal).
How many gallons were used for the primer and the paint?
Hey Orion I think we bought 2 5s of primer and 2 5s of finish. It's been a while since I did that house. But that is probably a pretty good guess
Look at that wind. What if you get it on neighbors house.Over spray ?
Hey Potato that is a great question . The overspray is mainly dust once it hits the air. it drys is a split second so we have no problems with overspray with the products we were using that day. NOw there are products that we have to be carfull with and when we use them we take precautions . I should have talked about that in my video . Ill try and remember for the next one because it is super important. thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
@@led8541 Thank you for replying.Have a good day.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Good video . Did you make a good profit on this one ? Paint does wonders
When using the sprayer, is there a concern that the overspray might paint or stain the roof shingles?
Hey Nicolas there is a chance of getting over spray on the roof. If you watch tim as he sprays the edge of the gutter acts like a paint shield , when the spray hits it it is deflected away from the roof and the a split second later it is just dust so it cant hurt or stick to anything . The product you use and the pressure and tip play a big roll in controlling overspray. Hope this helps Thanks for stopping by the channel and have a great week led
Thanks so much! Totally makes sense. I appreciate the great advice & video!
Yes. He should of put a drop on the roof or played a shield in the gutter. Spechuly how the wind was pulling the over spray over the gutter and up the roof line
What paint sprayer did you use? Would a 20 gallon air compressor support this? Also where do you buy your primer and finish from?
He used a Graco airless sprayer.....there is no need for an air compressor.
What was the name of the primer and paint on the house what is hard PROTECTION
Thanks..where do I get the paint??
whats the best sprayer to use on a house??
What kind of of primer is that
Hey Ruthie thanks for stopping by the channel. The primmer is called gripper. It is sold by ppg it is an amazing product and will stick to just about anything if properly used.
Did your use Acri-shield or acri-shield max?
Hey Magen im pretty sure it was the max.
What kind of paint did you use for finish coat? Thanks!
Hey brianna it was a ppg product called ( Acri Shield) any good acrylic fishish will work as long as you put a good primer on first.
What kind of paint is best?
Hey Alexander That is a tough question because all of the different manufacturers have there version of what they call the best. I use a lot of ppg and sherwin williams products and i like some of both. the products in this video the gripper primer and the ppg acri shield top coat are two products that i use every day and i know how they work. Are they the best I think for this job they were the best the house turned out great and im sure it will last for yrs. Thanks for stopping by the channel and i hope you have a great week led

What kind of finish paint
Hey Victoria thanks for stopping by the channel . I would recommend a high quality flat finish.
Nice vid-can you suggest video how to best clean off badly oxidized aluminum siding paint to prep for painting ? Tx !
Don't use a all in one primer paint on metal I paint metal guard rails at work I have tried all kinds of all in one products nothing works better than a good scrubbing pad use a good metal primer and a good quality paint the nice thing about painting metal is.you don't have paint it very often if you do a great job of preparing the surface and use good primer and paint
And clean clean clean with tsp and a scrubbing pad you can get them at dollar tree cheap

Tri sodium phosphate. It’s a cleaning agent. You can get it. Any hardware store.
Can you repaint previously painted aluminum siding?
Yes just make sure the surface is clean .
