    I have the Waza Craft version and I love it six ways from Sunday. The difference between Standard and Custom modes is not like chalk and cheese, you certainly wouldn't notice it in a live setting but there IS a difference and you can (just for instance) use one mode for the left channel and one mode for the right channel when double-tracking in the studio. One of these into an Orange is certainly a recipe for joy...

    The SD-1W is an amazing pedal ! The clarity, tightness and slight gain boost is worth $149. The SD1 by itself is a great pedal. If that’s what you want than go that route. It’s a great pedal. Those of you with a discerning ear will appreciate the small changes but huge improvements the Waza Craft version gives you. I run the SD1W into a JP2C with the gain on the SD1W cranked and a TC Sentry Gate in the chain. It’s a great tone !

    From experience the waza craft can do both and it's also a very transparent pedal. The regular sd1 tends to kill the bass response where the sd1w keeps it stays and it stays tight no flub.

    I personally own both. Granted the SD-1 much much longer, the NEWER surface mount PCB boards are a BIG upgrade compared to the old diode board. IMO, the Waza just sounds more clearer, and slight boosted. Now when I mean clearer, I mean more articulate, every note stands out, some may like it, some may not. Personally, not really me. I run my level max out, tone at 12, and drive at 8 o'clock. The Waza for me is more piercing but in a good way because that's what people pay for and should expect. Same for the custom channel, it's just extra of EVERYTGING.. I like the SD-1, sounds more natural. Again IMO ✌

    So being someone that falls for pedal propaganda and marketing, I decided to get a SD-1W. I already have an SD1 MIT and I think it’s the greatest pedal ever made. Few things I noted:
    Both had the same noise floor. I tested them separately and together. So the noise floor argument is out of the window.
    I played both and while the SD-1W has that tube crank/ growl and a “Hi-Fi” sound as someone put it. There literally wasn’t much difference between both. If anything I found the SD-1W way too compressed. It did well with solos but for rhythm and the organic open sounding tone I much preferred the MIT. Hence lesson learned, don’t over engineer and fall for propaganda. When you know you have a winner stick with it!

    • @jsdhesmith2011
      @jsdhesmith2011 2 роки тому

      I agree. To me it sounds more compressed. Don’t mess with perfection. It’s like they made a sandwich and cut the crust off of it. Sometimes the crust is the best part, especially when it comes to pizza. I call bs and chalk this up to good ol marketing hype. I don’t care where something is made as long as the quality control is good. I hate when companies try to put a premium on products based on where it was made, as if Japanese hands are more skilled to Chinese or Mexican or whatever. It all comes down to manufactures meeting specs based off the original design and using the same parts. I but squier guitars just for this reason. I can afford a fender but I choose not to pay for the logo and brand when a perfectly fine Indonesian guitar looks plays and feels the same as what it’s imitating.

  • @lozD83

    There really is virtually no discernible difference between the two until the switch from "S" to "C" @ 5:45 - On a live performance with either pedal, you wouldn't know the difference with this setting only... Probably exactly the same circuitry for the "S" setting as the humble SD-1. Flipping the switch, it becomes a whole other pedal and that's why it's twice the price.

    The SD-1 has more bite. The SD-1w pushes more bass. Which is great through a clean amp. I use the SD-1 as a boost to push my already dirty amp for lead work. I’ve used a Super Overdrive like this since 1986. The SD-1w pushing more bass in an already driven amp, mushes my wound strings which I don’t like. Almost like a fuzz. I like the way the SD-1 keeps the wound strings tight. Both great pedals though for sure.

      Bell tone is a nice way to describe that thing it does. I agree the normal one seems to do it better than the waza.

    considering buying an SD1... based upon the sound clips coming through my PC speakers... I hear a bit less noise out of the waza version _ especially with tone knob turn up (treble). But I feel that kinda equates to possibly coming off a bit/tad sterile (less lively) - might be great for recording??? The custom setting seems a bit dark in the clips I've caught and Im not sure how that equates to my guitars/amps.... I really cant say with additional $$$ is justified based upon clips like these of what I have heard? I do own the waza delay dm2... and love it! thanks for the video!

      I say get the waza craft. I have the SD-1 and it’s a great pedal but I still can’t get the waza version out of my head. I guess it’s my love for the original making me want the newer one. A little less noise and a better buffer sounds good to me. But no doubt I’ll still have my original until it dies or I do. Just my 2 cents.
      Peace ✌️ ❤️ 🎼= happiness

      Man… 2 years later and I’m back to this clip. I have the original (cheaper) sd1 and still love it! It might be my favorite overall (versatile) overdrive. I like it better than ocd, Maxon ts808, boss blues driver, and others I had owned and sold…
      After listening to this again… the waza def seems tighter, more articulate. Wider spectrum… like there’s a concentration in the the mids on the original… t which might cut better??? I think set in a mix… it still be hard to tell unless you were to engineer the tracks maybe….
      I think I’m gonna get the waza at some point

    The Waza Craft is superb 👍🏻 If this normal (not the Waza) Super Overdrive SD-1 compared to Overdrive OD-3, which one is better?

    • @rowdyjohnson6026
      @rowdyjohnson6026 5 років тому

      Neither is " better" they are just different and " which is better" depends on how you use it and what you are using it to do, and what you are using with it. Do you need a semi clean solo boost through a dirty tube amp? a mid boost for solos, using it to boost another " dirt" pedal? As a standalone "dirt" pedal through a clean amp? Solid state amp? How much max gain are you going for? Once ya answer those questions, ya buy the one that fits YOUR needs and other existing gear the best.

    When I watched this video I had previously been listening to and researching Ibanez tube screamers, TS9s, 808s and minis. I compared them with each other and also with their vintage daddys. I stumbled across this video because I already have an SD-1 and it is fantastic, a lovely warm vintage-sounding overdrive in a £49 box. The difference in sound between the tube screamers was very subtle though audible. This is a very precise/scientific/professional revue Danish Pete and thank you for doing it that way :-) So, is it just me or do both pedals sound EXACTLY the same, BOSS are asking £80 for the boost switch? I have been a fan of BOSS for thirty years and I love them for telling it like it is and making good honest products. Why are they, all of a sudden, jumping on the smoke and mirrors BS wagon and selling modded versions of their own pedals?

    • @LeviBulger

      The Waza has loads more low-mids when you hear this in person. I personally like that, especially with a Fender or Vox amp to round out the sound and make chords feel right in your gut. I would gladly pay the extra for that, but the original is still amazing for the price.

    You should have named this video $58 vs $165. The difference will come down to which guitar and amplifier you use, not which of these you choose. They both sound very similar.. so it's easy to say that $58 wins.

    The Waza Craft takes a lot of the muddiness off the bottom. Cleans the sound up a lot. Nice improvement, otherwise a lot of detail is lost with the unmodded, stock SD-1, and this is with a strat with single coil pickups. That cleaner bottom end would definitely be a big advantage to a guitar with humbuckers since they normally tend to have a thicker, muddier sound. I'll go for the Waza Craft any day over the stock SD-1. Noticeably improved sound IMHO.
    Too bad the link to more info on Boss Pedals doesn't work (404 - page missing error), and there's no info on where to get a Waza Craft version or what the cost is.

      GlennMarshallRocks I totally agree and the coil/humbucker argument is exactly what I was thinking of as well. If you only have one guitar and your settings will stay the same on everything regardless of the songs you play then perfect to go with the original. Anything that requires you to use multiple sounds, well the waza is gonna be able to manage that better without necessarily having to change your entire chain and amp settings to compensate. More options= well more options lol. And musicians friend still sells the waza stuff
