Super versatile, tight and focused. It is one of two pedals along with my MXR compressor that never left my pedalboard since the late 90s.

This is the best comparison of these similar, but different, pedals Ive ever seen with good examples and mixing them together. I love Blues Driver, but the others are certainly good.
Nice Novo btw, dude. It's probably because I mostly play rhythm in my band, but I love that you're not only playing a bunch of lead stuff. Giving us a sense of both. It personally annoys me when people demo gear (particularly amps and OD pedals) and basically just play a bunch of solos, (I know that's a personal problem...lol). Also, I just ordered a Waza Craft BD-2w, and I love the sound of it here. They all sound awesome, though. Great demo.
Thanks mate, much appreciate the feedback! I’m sure I’d do a load of solos if I could haha but I think everyone will play some rhythm and it’s easier to reference riffs you know to gauge whether you like the tone or not 🤘😊
I have the 3 pedals (non Waza). I used to stack DS1 into SD1. Whereas you always put the DS at the end. What are your thoughts on overdrive art the end (boosted by the DS low gain high volume )? I guess I just have to try by myself the changes … but let me know.
It's amp, guitar, and genre dependent. Blues to Classic Rock on a Super Lead or Plexi - SD-1. Classic Rock on a Tube Vox amp like an AC30/15 and the smaller Vox's in that vain, especially with a Les Paul - BD-2W. Stoner rock to the lighter end of Doom, for the less fuzzy type stuff - DS-1W for that vintage classic distortion.
Great comparison video ...even applying it to the 90s time period tones, where they were quite obviously used ! ...thanks for this! Now I just need to get the Super Overdrive to complete my tri!
Watched this video and again only because I want to get all 3. 😂. Today I just ordered the SD-1W. Already got the BD-1W. In 3 months I will try to get the DS-1W and will come back to this video again. I believe it was supposed to get only one pedal but you made me get all 3 soon. It’s not a bad thing. 😅
Great demo, well done. I really like boss overdrives like the OD1, OD3, SD1 and BD2. The only overdrive that has been present on my pedalboard for a long time is the Boss SD1 Keeley five stars germanium mod which I only use to boost a Marshall JCM800 but I would have to test this Waza distortion DS1W one day with the ''custom'' mode because I I've never been a big fan of the ds1 and distortions from Boss unlike their overdrives.
Great video - i have to say that boosting the Brown channel on my Katana with the Blues Driver gives me the best 'Jerry' Sound with both my Les Paul and G&L. I kind of like it better than the BE OD Pedal.
It feels like you decided to play all my favorite riffs at once LOL the best comparison video so far and it's not even close. I let my SD-1w go and kept the BD-2w after almost a decade of playing both. I love how versatile the BD-2w is. You can go from Radiohead to Mayer to Zep to My Bloody Valentine to Prince easily. Great sustain for soloing too.
The blues driver is basically my two channel amp now. It can do anything. My DS1W is my lead tone. put it on Custom and crank whatever you want on it and itll sound good
Great comparison! I have the BD-2w and SD-1w, love them both. Never been a fan of the DS-1, but the custom setting on the the DS-1w sounds amazing. I gotta get one now.
I have the standard DS-1 and SD-1, and if you put the DS-1 first into the SD-1 then you can have the sound of Firehouse's "All She Wrote" from the late '80s (for reference). Set the DS-1 as you normally would use it in front of an amp and use the SD-1 as an amp with the Drive at 9 o'clock and Level at 1 o'clock and take it from there.
Love all the Radiohead riffs! The BD-2 has become a core part of my sound over the years. I've been debating upgrading to a BD-2W or a Keeley Super Phat Mod. Do you feel it's worth having the custom/phat modes? Are they effective in smoothing out the gain and adding some bass?
if you didn't already own the BD-2 then i'd say go for it, but if you sold that to get the BD-2W then i think the Waza does have a slightly lower noise floor (but the originals aren't bad at all tbh!) and you'd get an additional mode which is really handy if you like the different tones when switching out guitars say from Humbuckers/LP style to a single coil Strat, you may want to use the additional switch that way. I don't have a BD-2 to compare but if you're happy with the BD-2 then stick with it!
Thanks mate, I take that approach with all my demos as it’s what I’d like to see in a demo. I usually buy a pedal and then thing “err what can I play with this” haha so hopefully these help 🤘😊

Hi Matt - good review again. I never liked any of these Boss pedals but they were pretty much all we could get for gain in 80s/90s. They were tone suckers when turned off too. How do the Waza pedals perform there? Do they still have poor quality buffers... or didn't you check ??
Thanks Peter! Didn't check specifically but I'll have a look, to my ears no tone sucking going on with these! The waza versions are completely redesigned with component improvements/lower noise floor etc so I thought they sounded great imo
I don't agree boss are tone sucking pedal. The original Sd1 is the only one having a real circuit problem, it leaks some of the distorted signal in the clean path when not active, that's a confirmed issue, you could fix it with a FET if you have some solder skill, otherwise the boss buffers are well made
Boss have used a variety of buffer designs in their pedals, they aren’t all the same and comments saying they suck tone is simply not accurate. Some of them do though, but mostly modulation and some delays and it’s mostly the 80’s MIJ ones that have the bad buffers. Having owned an original CE2, it was so good for Boss to reissue it with a superior buffer that doesn’t destroy the tone. Never had any issues with Boss’s drive pedals.
That clean tone, at the very beginning, is dirty. I don’t understand why some people call dirty tones clean. It may be “cleaner,” than full distortion but it should be called “less dirty” or something of the like. Clean means clean.
2 modes, improved noise floor and other refinements, I think the second mode on the DS-1w is especially worth it for the mid boost, really useful for band situations :-)
Only on the BD2W and SD1W, it’s far more pronounced on other Waza pedals, except for the DC2W. It just adds more versatility without fundamentally changing the pedal and if you use different guitars and amps, it’s just useful to have, even when it’s subtle. The MT2W’s Custom mode though...

Fair enough but why use Waza versions when most of these songs were created before Waza existed. Seems like the expensive versions are being pushed.
