Boss SD-1 (King of the Budget Overdrive Pedals)

  • Today we're taking a look at an absolute classic. It's the Super Overdrive by Boss. This pedal is cheap, sounds good, and is really well made. That's often the trouble with budget overdrives. They might sound good, but they can break if you look at them funny. Not the SD-1. It's built like a Boss.
    Enjoy!

great vid...you can also use this as a "mock" treble booster by dialing up the tone and volume controls, and keeping the gain rolled all the way off...very versatile pedal, and a classic in every way...

Hi, I used a Maxon od9 for a long time (and dozens of others like MXR...) then an original Boss SD1 to boost my Marshalls which I used with an MXR equalizer in the loop to find the sound that suits me until the day I found an SD1 boss modified by Keeley: the five stars germanium. It is more "transparent" with an improved bypass and a mini switch allows you to choose Germanium or Led clipping mode. Germanium: smoother & compressed/ LED: clearer & more "open". Whatever mode you choose, this overdrive respects the character of the amp and has a little more definition and output level than the standard SD1. The Tone is particularly effective and even if I mainly use it to boost a jcm800, this overdrive also knows how to offer interesting overdrives with the sounds of the OD1/OD3 but doesn't sound like a tube screamer, it doesn't cut the bass as much or add as much color in the mids nor has the slightly nasal character of a TS9. It's been my overdrive for 15 years that never leaves my pedalboard, the best overdrive to boost a Marshall or any other British type amp, from blues to Metal, with a strat in single coils or a superstrat in humbuckers everything is sublimated.

While the plexi is always amazing, the SD-1 does a great job of cutting some lows out and make the signal a tad more focused. It just works for rock.

Budget or otherwise, the SD-1 is a great pedal! The basic made in Taiwan yellow pedal is popular for modding to have the same circuit as the TS-808 with about $1 worth of parts and some soldering.

I picked up one of these back around '84 or '85 gigged the heck out of it and still use it from time to time. Of course I've had a lot of other overdrive and distortion pedals over the years and the SD-1 isn't the "Best Ever!!!" but it does what it does incredibly well and Boss pedals are built to last.
    Great video.

  • @jimmyjames2022
    @jimmyjames2022 8 місяців тому +2

Good old workhorse SD-1 works nicely with single or humbuckers. And you've added some great use cases. I only ever used two pedals back in the 1980-90s when I was mainly playing with garage bands, the SD-1 and a Boss DD-3. For years now I've only used amp gain and reverb and my current amp, a tiny Quilter Superblock UK, seems like the best tone I've ever had. But I'm not playing with a band anymore so it's not real world tested.

Inspired by your videos, I just got myself a Kramer OD1, a Korean clone of the Boss SD-1. I have a soft spot of 1980s style classic/heavy metal, so I figured I would get one eventually. I already have a Electro-Harmonix Nano Metal Muff, a clone of the Boss Metal Zone MT-2, to cover extreme metal sounds, but to be honest it's a bit exaggerated when used as a boost, so the OD1 is a bit more refined into a Marshall preamp, really gives an extra push without distorting too much. Good timing on the video, I suppose. Nice playing too, as always. :)

Got my SD-1 as my first overdrive pedal many years ago and still I couldn't find nothing better to push my Mesa mk.V. I tried at least other 20 overdrives but this is still the best. As you said though, it's very good for gainy amps, but on the clean tones I admit I hate it. 😂

Absolutely right over there with SD1, most likely best budget OD. It has been my choice for two decades to boost 5150, 6505 (these day the actual 6505MH) and I think it does job even better than TS - matter of taste of course.

When I was starting out ages ago, I got told that almost all the cool heavy metal tones of the 80's were produced by JCM800 2203 with SD1 in the front. So I had to have one. Only much later I learned that it's definitely not true and there's so much more gear options, even rack stuff like ADA MP1 for that era of tone.

Its nice with a Marshall JCM 2000. Especially with a humbucker guitar. Its cuts the low end so you dont cross the bass drum and bass guitar in the mix and it boosts and adds extra drive that when it hots a Marshall makes it sound even better!!!

The SV20 is sick and not lacking for bass...but it's not a 100w. I'm a little worried the SD-1 is gonna cut too much bass. Or is it "just right" in your ears and you prefer this?

First, cool concept, "How to videos' Thumbs up. Your suggestion to use it on an amp already with some dirt, not so much a clean amp. I'd add to that, from Edge of breakup on up. Now Shhhhhhh, pedal companies don't want you to know this, but there isn't that much variation from a handful of these first OD and Distortion pedals. Construction and components have increased consistency, but the designs are all variations of a few themes. If one can afford it, the WAZA version, is a little bit quieter. Not enough. I'd recommend it unless you can easily afford the price jump.

"How to use this pedal with high gain amp as a clean boost" ==> Hooooo, the tone that comes after this sentece is a killer one with or without a pedal. I like it so much. Sorry, maybe even more than your standard strat sound. There is nothing wrong with your favourite sound, just tastes are different. I like your playing, normally I don't care about the tone, but this video is about tone.

I agree. I put a Mosky Audio Silver Horse before it, running both as “clean boosts” into the dirty channel of my Super Crush 100. The Silver Horse brought back the bottom end in a really nice way. I felt like it rounded the tone out in a nice way when put before the SD1, whereas just running the SD1 sounded like all the bottom end was lost. It’s not a bad Klon clone for $35-40 on Amazon.
