    I got a request for a self tape just the other day and I was not prepared. I am an amateur performer and I work as a SA, and I'm relatively new to this game. The audition was for a TV commercial. I was flattered that I got asked to self tape for it, but angry with myself for not being better prepared for it. I have since bought some equipment and have started to do some research. I just wanted to say thank you for these videos, they are really helpful. Thank you.

    Omg, I just have to share my excitement over the fact I just met of on croatia's most talented actor, and I was over the moon, and since I am currently unable to attend any acting related activities at the moment, I was so happy to actually see an actor in such a remote place like this one I live in. Super nice person, and it made me realize just how excited I am to pursue this route.
    Sorry guys but no one really knows about my plans just the Kurt Yue followers.
    Have a blessed day everyone!

    Big tip on where the microphone is placed. I learned over the last few years of vlogging and uploading to YT that when the mic is down low or even at mouth level the audio can sound more tinny or nasally. If you have a mic stand that is able to go above your head and having it about three inches or so away from your face but (still out of frame) it will sound loads better. I've tested it myself and it makes a world of difference.

    I was researching something about camera focus for my Nikon D5600...and this was one of the videos that popped up. Don't know why but I'm glad it did. I subscribed to your channel after finding it and have enjoyed your content. I also bought a Canon 80D after watching this along with the camera comparison video. My Nikon cameras are really ticked about it. I had been doing my audition tapes with the Canon Vixia HF R800. I did my first audition yesterday with the 80D and was very pleased. Thank you for the help you given me.

      I've been using the self tape reader app coldRead and what I have found is if I plug in my microphone to the phone I can't hear the reader lines. That's a real flaw. Fortunately it has adjustments for sound on the reader lines so you can lower it. This thing has a steep learning curve but I finally got an acceptable take.

    Sweet Kurt! The virtual reader was super cool, to have friends like that. You've helped stave off some of the taping bugs in my life. I was always taught that casting directors despise of "black boarders" on the side. I assume that's the case only in the audition portion and not the slate? I use Youcut to edit my files.

    • @ActingCareerCenter

    First of all, I really enjoy all of your videos.
    Second, I have two questions:
    1. How do you practice a scene without a scene partner?
    2. Is it weird if you only have two or three acting classes on your resume?

    • @ADifferentVibe
      @ADifferentVibe 3 роки тому +2

      You can practice with the virtual reader. And no, it's not weird to have 2-3 classes when you are starting. You can keep training with different classes as you go through auditioning and your career!

    • @ActingCareerCenter
      @ActingCareerCenter  3 роки тому +3

      You can use a rehearsal app like Rehearsal Pro or Cold Reader. Or you can use a simple voice recorder. But a virtual reader is definitely the most effective, in my opinion.
      There's no standard amount of acting classes that should go on a resume. For many years, I only had one class on my resume because that was the only class available in my city. I would just go to that same ongoing class every week.

    Watching this video has let me know that I don't need to be sitting so close to my backdrop!! For some reason I thought I had to be right in front. But I saw you were a few feet away from your background and it looked great!!

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino 2 роки тому

      It's actually better if the backdrop is slightly out of focus but you're PERFECTLY in focus. That's why I like to use an 85mm lens for auditions and put some distance between myself and the backdrop. The bigger the backdrop the better because then you can create distance without hitting the edge of the backdrop. I know a lot of actors that just paint one of the walls in their home a neutral color and use that. That gives you a lot more room to play with and a lot more options when it comes to lightning. More room to set up your lights and experiment; bouncing light off a reflector or bounce board. Indirect & defused light is always better in my opinion.

    Great video as usual Kurt! Sooo glad you showed that although you shoot horizontally you crop it to a vertical format. I shoot mine in my garage and have to use vertical to crop out what's beyond my non distracting background.
    Otherwise people will think I'm 'Buffalo Bill' from 'Silence of the Lambs.' 😉
    Also kind of curious why you put your slate at the end as opposed the beginning?

    • @ActingCareerCenter
      @ActingCareerCenter  3 роки тому +1

      For 99% of my film and television auditions, the casting directors request the slate either at the end or in a separate file entirely. Very rarely do they ask for the slate at the beginning. It's more common for commercial auditions to ask for the slate in the beginning.

      When I first started I was only doing it for fun and had no plans to pursue this as a career. Because of that, it was treated as a hobby and I spent maybe 3-5 hours on it per week. As I gradually became more serious about it, it grew to probably 20 hours per week.
