You have no idea how much it has affected my self-esteem every time I audition and never hear back from anyone, ever. Although I admit I have been very amateur with my self tapes. I hope I can step up my game with these tips, thank you so much for sharing this. I hope the channel keeps growing!
You got this Mariana! And don’t judge yourself for past audition tapes, we have learned and improved along the way as well. It’s the journey that matters, not the destination. Let us know how the new setup works for you!
Well I couldn't agree more with what everyone else is saying!! I am a completely technology challenged 62 year old, just coming back into the industry where I worked professionally for the first 40 years of my life, now intimidated overwhelmed and having impossible time moving on until I came upon you guys!!! You inspired me to just slow down, get methodical ,get over the fact that I hate how I look on camera..ASK FOR HELP, and just go for it. Thanks to you guys, JUST LAST NIGHT, I hit a young man up who knows technology, offered him 100 bucks to put down 3 minutes which shouldn't take more than a couple hours...and he's going to help me tonight after his show.. my first 3 minutes video submission ever !! I think I'm the only one left in America who never even zoomed during the pandemic!!! . This has been and still is such a challenging time for the all of us... And they this pandemic on top of other global challenges..I've come to realize the arts are more important than ever... To keep us human... sharing ...connected . And I've always believed it doesn't matter whether you're performing in a 20 seat space or a 5000 seat Broadway stage it's just the connection between human beings and it isn't even important that I get whatever I'm going for this first time around just that I get back at it..... Your overwhelmingly generous attention to detail....the fact you guys are taking time out of your busy young lives....clearly for no great monetary reasons....gifting us all your hard learned lessons..... well it means an enormous amount to those of us who have gotten lost along the way! THANK YOU!!!!!
I never tire of a 32 Bar Cut video. You guys are so truthful and genuine about what works, what doesn't and about helping us become better performers. Thank you guys ❤❤👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you. I have a small house and not much space. As a result, I have made a corner area of my living space for my self tapes. I also live on a street where there are cars driving by. I just purchased some mics, etc.
HOW!? HOOOOW did we get so lucky to have you two breaking this down and making this video for us? I so appreciate all of this valuable information, thank you both so much. One question - do you have a mic adaptor recommendation for a mic with a USB cord? I love my mic but have always had to do the painstaking work of syncing it in post.
I’ve just got a new agent, and last days been very much into thinking about self tapes and what to use. Thanks guys for the tips and useful info! Here’s to us all getting jobs booked!!! 🙌🏻❤️🤝
Ok as one who is on a budget, what would you recommend upgrading first? (Currently use phone, ring light, computer speaker for accompaniment, and a blanket backdrop). Also off topic, congratulations to both of you on your new shows!!!!
Definitely get your background looking slick first. Find a good wall to paint or buy an unwrinkled backdrop and stands to hold it. Second, get a good bluetooth speaker like the Bose SoundLink. Great sound and power for the price! amzn.to/3q9kFF3 The lighting can wait, simply because you can always find a bunch of lamps you already own to make your lighting look good. If you can't get the lighting good, then definitely get that upgraded next. Camera upgrade should be last. Phones are getting so good in quality, the price trade off isn't quite worth it unless you are ready to spend 2-4K. Best of luck Katherine!
Excellent video! So amazingly detailed! Thank you for breaking all of those aspects down to a science. Thank you so much for blessing us with this video! Peace and blessings to you both! ❤
We are so glad that you found our video useful! Good luck and break a leg on your college submissions. If you have some friends who would benefit, please share! Thanks for watching and thanks for subscribing! ✨
Thank you so much..I'm a full time actress in South Africa and I always say I hate selftape but since I've learned alot from you guys..I'm on it as we speak because I have a big audition to submit by tomorrow ❤😊🙏
Thank you both so much for the great job you did on this video!!! I've been making self tapes for a long time and after a long series of rejections, so, not getting the jobs, I finally found you. It's valuable good tips I got from you and I'm curious to see if it leads to different results after the implication. I am also following you from today and look forward to more input. Kind regards 😀
Just seeing this and I really need it on my acting journey and learning to self tape! Thanks so much. Now how soon can you both just move in with me so I can have you on deck?? 😂 thanks again!!❤
I wish I had seen this video one month ago. I have made three tapes but had technical difficulties and could not get the first one submitted. I got the other two out, but I am not confident they were any good and I had no idea how to title them. Your video was awesome!
Absolutely wonderful! SO HELPFUL! I have been doing self tapes for a little while, but this really gave me some great tips that I didn't realize I needed. I have a small house with very little space to set up my backdrop (still a struggle), and this helped me to find ways to adapt. Curious as to how you feel with a curtain backdrop? If only I had a live in reader with this dedication 😅. Y'all are amazing! Thank you!
Hi! I'm new to the self tape scene. Do you do the same slate for both stage and screen? Also, do you say what the piece you are doing is? Like "Hi! I'm James Spangler and I'll be singing What More Can I Say". Thanks for all of your great information and advice!
Great video. So I'm guessing you NEVER use the selfie side to film slate or anything half body. As far as lights. I just got Neewer 12×12 lights. Do you suggest only using 1 of those and use a smaller one for other side? I just wish you did a wide angle to see full set up
Thank goodness I found you I e been blowing auditions w tricky IPhone issues I hate using it but budget tight so seeking the best option for super simple user friendly camera ?
This was really good. I really appreciate you. I'm new to this and this helps me do it the right way the first time. Thanks again. Hopefully, we can work together on a few projects together. I love connecting and working with like-minded professionals.
Hey! So grateful to have come across your channel! Thank you for being so candid about the self-tape process. I was wondering if you had any advice on mic clipping for musical theatre tapes? :) thanks again!
Hey Camille! Thanks for your question and for subscribing! Yes, mic clipping can be an issue, but it is difficult for me to help without knowing your particular setup. Send us an email at contact@32barcut.com and Austin will help you out!
Hey, can we contact the casting director even if we're not contacted by them and act out a scene by ourself? Thank you so much for this video, this was so good.
Thank you for the informative video! I’m curious about the accent/hair light. Which light did you use for the accent/hair light? Did you attach the accent/hair light to your backdrop’s rod to keep it place (essentially, where is it a attached)? Your videos are amazing!!
Check out the “…more” in the video description. There are a list of affiliate links there to all of the equipment we mention in the video. Good luck on your auditions and thanks for watching!
@@32BARCUT Hey there, I have a question about Neewer. 9 Months after you made this video, does the tripod and everything you bought from Neewer still work as they're supposed to ? I am doubting buying products from Neewer because I read some reviews in which they said that Neewer buys Chinese stuff and sells it on their website. Can you share your own experience with their products? Thanks!
Amazing video!! 😍😍 Quick question: I usually audition for cruise lines and I was never asked for a slate (neither from the agency). Now I’m getting one for a show onboard and they gave me a scene, so more musical theater-like. Again, no mention of a slate. Should I record one anyway? They do ask for a dance combo so that will be a full body shot. I’d love to hear your opinion!! Thank you 🥰🥰
Yes! I think you should slate. It will show your level of professionalism. Whether they ask for it or not. It is industry standard to slate. (Just once tho! Not for every clip you send)
Hi Sandra! Small rooms do make filming a bit difficult. If you’re using your iPhone, you may be able to get just the right framing to shoot an audition. But you’ll want to test the sound and make sure that it’s clear. If you end up using a higher end camera, you’ll want to try a 35mm lens - but there may be some distortion because of the wide angle. Best of luck to you!!
We used a heavy duty support beam made for photography and a ring light attached to it. Here is a link to the support beam we used. amzn.to/3uspmLS it’s an affiliate link, but no extra cost to you. The one we used, is pretty pricey, but very sturdy and nothing has ever toppled over. There are less expensive options too! We attached our ring light to the end of the neewer heavy duty support beam and voila, a hair light that never fails. Our ring light also has a remote control to turn it on and off, so we just leave the hair light set up all the time and ready for self tapes. Here is a link to the ring light as well. amzn.to/3bVkSHe Please let us know if you have more questions! Thanks for watching, break a leg!
That is a great point Anne! Hopefully this helps: Let’s use a clock to visualize the placement. Imagine you’re the 6 on the clock. Your front light is 12. Place another light at 3 & 6, but aimed towards you (that will knock the shadows off the wall). If you have access to one more light and an adjustable tripod to secure it, you can add the hair light. It’s place up above your eyeline and at 5 o’clock, still pointed towards you! Good luck with all of your auditions and thanks so much for watching and subscribing!
WOW - this was one of THE BEST and most thorough videos I've seen on this subject. Way to go y'all. AMAZING.

should you use the room light as well as the ring light, or just the ring light and natural sun light?

We actually use a huge 9' boom light stand that holds the LED Neewer Light.
really good video
What colour would you recommend for a backdrop for someone pale with silver/grey hair???
im pale with blonde hair and i heard navy blue is a good option for backdrops
I would agree with Felicity here, a rich navy or cerulean blue should work.
i have a fringe, should i push/pin it back when auditioning?
This was greatly helpful!
