  • In this clip from: "John Piper On Holiness," Jon and Justin discuss a sermon by John Piper from T4G 2022, critiquing potentially misleading messages from Piper's general message of Holiness. Together, they explain why this type of teaching can inhibit one's assurance in Christ and his saving work.
"John Piper On Holiness" Full Episode: • John Piper on Holiness...
In this episode, Jon and Justin discuss a message recently given by John Piper on Christ's death and the holiness of the believer. The guys interact with clips from the message and seek to consider it from a biblical, confessional, and Reformed perspective. At Theocast, we are in complete agreement that Christ's work has secured the holiness of the saints. Significant things to consider along these lines are: union with Christ; the active obedience of Christ; the relationship of justification and sanctification; and the proper way to preach the law and the gospel.
Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin continue the conversation on the holiness of believers. The guys consider better--and more biblical--ways to pursue and instill holiness in the church.

His interpretation of the narrow gate spoken of in Luke 13 is that Jesus is saying we have to work really hard to get into the kingdom. He says this at the conference. The narrow gate is narrow because there is only ONE WAY. Jesus IS that way. Jesus tells us the meaning of the narrow gate in John 10. Jesus IS the gate. Only those who enter THROUGH HIM will be saved. He is teaching totally false doctrine and it is incredibly harmful. How is this NOT Galatian error that we are hearing from him?

So true! My dad would always tell me this error all the time. He would keep saying we have to always examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith and keep walking that narrow road and I was always like what?

@@erickchristopher8568 Amen. That statment he made is taken from another passage that is taken out of context. Paul was speaking to Corinth, a church that he brought to the faith, and was now questioning his authority as an apostle. The accusation was that he wasn't a true apostle and didn't have the authority to speak for God. We read this in the preceeding chapters. So Paul makes the point "If I am a false apostle, you are all false converts. Because it was MY gospel message that brought you to the faith. So check yourself to see if you are in the faith, unless of course you fail the test."
That is the proper understanding of the context. If people would just read the Bible instead of listening to everything some big name pastor says...

@@medic4christ777 That's a pretty popular interpretation of 2 Corinthians 13:5. It can be pretty depressing and can cause this obsessive self introspection.

@@Huero87 Unfortunately its popular because people don't know how to read in context. And "pastors" aren't teaching them.

@@medic4christ777 I used to be part of a super toxic church in the Dallas/Fort Worth area around 10 years ago. Unfortunately, I have never been able to fully get over it. They were big into Lordship Salvation type thinking. Who knows how many people I pushed away from the faith with my over zealous negative attitude.

2 Corinthians 13:5…Matthew 7:21-23…2 Peter 1:10-11… love the podcast guys! I’m just posting these verses because I myself and others see the importance of self examination to make sure we aren’t the goats and tares that the Bible warns us about. There’s a healthy balance of this without thinking we are “earning” our salvation. The devil would rather you NEVER examine yourself or read the verses posted- that’s another confirmation that we in fact SHOULD read them. There’s just a culture right now in Williamson county of antinomianism, and if anything, I feel like people should be checking themselves here waaaaaay more. Do we just believe in Christ or have be believed INTO Christ? Have we really put our trust in him by how we love our lives? Is He really King of Kings and Lord of Lords or are we just cultural Christians who are living out Matthew 7:21 in real time?

I appreciate this video. However, the implied definition of pietism presented here seems incomplete, only covering "personal pietism" and its relationship to "works". There is no discussion about "collective pietism" (the effects of personal pietism as it takes hold of churches, denominations, organizations or nations) and its devastating effects on our society, where Christians pull back from responsibilities or duties in the public/civic sphere. Would you be willing to discuss that aspect? Thank you.

The historical definition of "Pietism" is what you call "personal Pietism." For those who believe in Christian Reconstructionism (or Dominion Theology) they falsely think that unless the church engages in politics then the church is Pietistic. If one studies conservative Lutheran thought, however, the most anti-Pietist group out there, they are stridently anti-Pietistic and fully amillennial. In fact, I would contend that Dominion Theology is pietistic because it has a "Theology of Glory" instead of a "Theology of the Cross."

Don’t gauge your repentance of sin and your love for god as the means of your positional standing with God, for me the looking unto Christ and resting in Christ is the motivation into obedience and a heart felt devotion

What about 1st John where God speaks about good works giving us assurance

They have a podcast about did we misunderstood 1 John 4? And i think many of us do even people on the pulpit. 1 John 4:17 says that perfect love casts out fear, because fear has to do with punishment, anyone who fear has not been made perfect in love yet. This punishment is refering to eternal condemnation. It can't be refering to chastisement because Hebrews tells us to expect that if we are choosing to live ungodly. The overall message is not to trust in your works for assurance but to trust in the object of faith which is Jesus Christ. You works from faith can never in eternity be the basis of you assurance, because every faith + works = salvation teaching is silent about how much fruit is enough or how much holiness based on our works for assurance. This is a law mindset not a grace mindset. We all know what God asks if assurance lays in our works. And His answer to that He gave through Christ at the very end of Matthew 5.
      Matthew 5:48
Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
Jesus says, if you wanna find assurance through the works of the law, then this is your standard. If you manage that with your works/fruits, then you may know that you have assurance based on your works.

Some forget that Piper’s denomination is a Pietistic denomination. What else would you expect?

This was a very confusing video. John Piper is a determinist. He believes God elects some to salvation and other God creates to show His wrath - created for eternity in hell. Why from a Calvinistic perspective is this even a discussion if God has already predetermined everything. Or am I missing something?

A required result (good works) of salvation is the same as a condition for salvation.
"No holiness, no heaven" as Piper likes to say.
