  • In this episode, Jon and Justin discuss a message recently given by John Piper on Christ's death and the holiness of the believer. The guys interact with clips from the message and seek to consider it from a biblical, confessional, and Reformed perspective. At Theocast, we are in complete agreement that Christ's work has secured the holiness of the saints. Significant things to consider along these lines are: union with Christ; the active obedience of Christ; the relationship of justification and sanctification; and the proper way to preach the law and the gospel.
Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin continue the conversation on the holiness of believers. The guys consider better--and more biblical--ways to pursue and instill holiness in the church.

@@PETERJOHN101 These Theocast guys confuse law and grace saying that any requirement for Believers other than believing the Gospel is adding works to salvation
So the Command of walking in Christ Putting off the Old Man and Putting on the the New is regarded by them as law and hense not a requirement.
Colossians ch 2 & 3 breaks their false dichotomy in peace's
Colossians 2:6-7 6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
It says walking (actions doing) in Christ is actually of faith and part of living By Faith, hence it is not Law but indeed the New Law that the Believer is now subject to

I’m new to this channel just wanted to say thank you for teaching us about the truth of salvation and total rest in Christ. I am newly converted and have trusted in Christ for my salvation. You make a great point around 29:00 and I have always questioned this myself. People who continuously use the law to scare people and remind them of how unrighteous never provide the solution to that which is Christ and what he did. It always goes back to us trying harder but that doesn’t or won’t solve this issue at hand is that none is righteous no one is righteous.
So the question become okay what can I do to be seen as righteous then if I can’t be. It’s not try harder because we already know we won’t be enough. It’s trust in Christ he imputed his righteousness unto us 🤍. These types of preachers always add fear but never a solution just more fear 🤷🏾‍♀️.

I have recently found Theocast and am greatly encouraged and blessed by their defense of the gospel of Christ, the gospel of grace. This was a very helpful and necessary podcast. If anything, Jon and Justin are too easy on Piper. Piper is preaching a false gospel akin to those addressed by Paul in Galatians. So helpful for Jon and Justin to correctly point out that the primary motive for our sanctification is our union and identification with Jesus rather than doubting Jesus’ promise to save us that have believed in Him. See Romans 6.

Yep, if one says "if you don't have this holiness, you should not have assurance..." is like saying, "if you don't work hard around the home from December 26 on, you don't deserve to feel that that Christmas gift mom gave you is yours." The fact is you DON'T deserve it...EITHER WAY...and if you feel that undeservedness acutely enough to feel that that gift is inaccessible to you, that's probably a natural (though misapplied) outflow of the guilt you feel for having not worked hard around the home...but you should NEVER feel like the gift is no longer (or never was) yours. The gift was a gift, pure and simple. Piper is trying to confuse your internal feelings of guilt with deservedness. Piper is projecting his own guilt and feelings of inadequacy on his audience here, as he does all too frequently on many other audiences in many different settings. It is not a Godly message, and along with his "you need to get vaccinated out of love" message a year or so ago, should be rejected as such.

Thank you, brothers. A lot of us make the mistake of bringing the law with us when we turn to Christ. We want to have a holiness that comes from Christ + a holiness that comes from the law. It creates a zeal for God but not according to knowledge. "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness for those who believe", Romans 10. We can't have a holiness that comes from the law, because sin in us seizes on the commands and sins more and more, see Romans 7. I suspect that Piper might have a veil over his eyes still that 2 Cor 3:7-18 talks about.
The third use of the law just put me under the law. How do you use the law, in the third use, in a way that doesn't put Christians under the law? I don't know.
Anytime I heard the law I was in despair. Others are in pride or apathy. "The power of sin is the law," 1 Cor 15:56. Sin in us seizes on the commands and sin abounds, Romans 7. Then I read Romans 7 + Colossians 2:14 and the Spirit set my conscience free from the law. "The law rules over someone as long as they live...but you have been put to death in relation to the law through the body of Christ. You have been released from what held you." Romans 7. Jesus nailed the law, the certificate of debt, and all it's obligations, that were against us and opposed to us to the cross, Colossians 2:14. The law no longer has rule over me. I have been set free. "If the Son sets you free you are free indeed."
I'm allowed to use my gifts, abilities, vocation to do some good for my neighbor as I am willing and able. I'm not under the law anymore so I'm not under condemnation anymore. I still sin, but my sins are forgiven and I am holy for Jesus sake. My sin no longer belongs to me it belongs to Jesus now. My sins no longer separates me from God, which is how I am understanding what Jesus means when he tells the woman in adultery, "go and sin no more", our sin no longer separates us from God. Don't use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. "If you walk according to the Spirit you certainly won't give into the desires of the flesh" + "If you walk according to the Spirit you are not under the law" Galatians 5:16+18. I understand verse 17 to mean we are free from the law to do the good works that we want to do.
If we do give in to the desires of the flesh we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. Your sins are forgiven and you are holy for Jesus' sake.
We have a fear that if we get released from the law we will sin more. I think the opposite is true, I think we might sin less, but we still sin. Romans 7 8 "And sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind. For apart from the law sin is dead."
"We don't get released from the law to do nothing. We get released from the law to trust in Christ more." Martin Luther paraphrase.
Holiness is Christ in me. The Spirit is my guide now, not the law. I have peace with God.

The problem with your doctrine, which isn't what the bible teaches, is that it contradicts Paul, Jesus, John, and James.
Paul's statement that the law is the power of sin means we become guilty because we know the law, not that we become innocent if we continue in sin.
No where does Paul say that faith in Jesus voids the commandments. In fact, Jesus himself says in Mark 10:19 that we must keep the commandments in order to inherit eternal life.
In Galatians 5:19-21 Paul lists all the behaviors that prevent us from entering heaven. One can see that these activities violate one or more of the ten commandments.
"He who says he knows him, but does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." (1 John 2:4)

You guys handled this better than I would cause he's preaching lordship salvation, an accursed Gospel. And the total denial of the reality that we are 2 natures the old man and new man. The average person it's going to be able to decode what he's saying like you all or people that have studied well, and will think "Gosh, I have to clean my life up and be obedient and show evidence or I'm not really saved." thus putting the burden on themselves and not trusting Christ.
And this leads to a messed up Christian with no assurance and can't find rest or worse someone that hasn't even understood the Gospel and is lost in their own works.

The first little video of Piper and the Scriptures he is citating has bothered me for years in my struggle with sexual sins. I felt condemned by it for years. Untill God spoke to me Romans 7 when my eyes came across these verses once again. And i received in that moment the words in my thoughts (we know that the law is spiritual). God cleared out for me that Christ was not threatening reborn christians that He will throw them into hell for their sexual sins. He was speaking to the Jews and teaching the spiritual side of the law in Matthew 5 all the way to the end of Matthew 7. The goal of Christ was not for christians to feel condemned by Him for their sins, but deepen the law with the spiritual side of the law to make the Jews totally hopeless in achieving eternal life through their obedience of God's law.
What He tryed to do is to crush their thoughts in which they compared themselves with others to justify their right for eternal life through works. Christ's teaching about the Pharisee and the tax collecter inside the temple also connects to this kind of selfrighteousness. The Pharisee compared himself with others to justify himself just as Jews did back in His days and even till this day. So Christ adressed adultery for those in Matthew 5 who thought they could justify themselves by thinking they never commited adultery, and by doing so by deepening the law by showing the spiritual side of it to make everyone doom worthy. He tryed to cruss them with the law as Jon and Justin often say in their podcasts. By letting them know that not only the outward deed counts for God, but also our thoughtlife counts for God and that even sinful thoughts are under His wrath. That even fantasying about a woman in sexual ways is accounted as sin in the heart by Him which He will condemn if someone does not die in Christ.

Agree with you brothers that Piper means well in that he encourages us to preach with urgency, and also that there are a lot of good things that Piper says. However, the extreme pietism as exhibited in the sermon you reviewed, together with his confusion of law and gospel (resulting in a Piper-esque version of "glawspel"), shows his views to be outside of a historic & confessional Reformed understanding of soteriology. (Perhaps he could be viewed as a "Calvinistic Pietist."). Furthermore, as you point out, Piper's pietistic advice on preaching, if seriously heeded, is likely to cause great spiritual harm to the sensitive, "bruised reed" believer who struggles with assurance. Yes, I understand we want to be brotherly and uncontentious in dealing with brethren like Piper, but at the same time I believe he comes very close to preaching a false gospel, and thus needs to be confronted firmly in love and called to repentance. Imo, too many of our big-name Reformed & evangelical brethren fawn over this celebrity preacher way too much. It's time to remove Piper from the Big-Eva (& Big-TULIP) conference circuit. He's really not a sound teacher, in my view.

This type of tone in preaching in nearly ubiquitous. Justin makes a good point about, if you think your audience are fake Christians, then why are you not preaching clear law and Gospel.
Quite frankly when I hear this preaching I often think the pastor lacks humility. I wonder if they get tempted. I wonder if they fail. I wonder if they wander. I wonder if they think they’re always nailing it. I wonder if they secretly applaud themselves. My opinion is John Piper and others like him are very disconnected from the reality of their own sin and the reality of what their flock goes through day to day.
I’ve known many “holy” Christians. Guess what? They sin as well. I seriously believe though that some aren’t as sensitive to their own sin. Even Paul received a messenger of Satan to keep him humble.
When your up in front, writing books, shaking hands, kissing babies, etc it’s easy for one to see their great contribution to Christ. One may get deluded that they arrived and then there are the rest of the Christians. The lowly flock doesn’t have a high profile. Find it hard to have anything to brag about. The flock lives day to day in the world. Struggling against this life, our nature, the devil, etc.
This whole thing reminds me of my pastor who claimed he had fully
repented from all his sins in a message before the congregation. I wrote him and boldly told him he has not repented from all his sins. He responded with, yes, I have. So when I went to his home we talked face to face. In a different discussion not referring to my letter he told me he still struggles with sin. In my head I was thinking huh????wait…
He was sure he has repented but still sins? Is he confused or lying?
The bottom line is I think this illustrates many who preach like this. They’re not in check with their personal reality of their own condition. Aka lack of humility.
As for me, I have no hope but for the merits of Christ, his blood shed for me. This through his grace and by the faith gifted to me. I know what I’m about. Let Christ be my righteousness and I will boast of him.

Very good assessment of Piper's teaching and his views. His message is confusing because he does talk about salvation through faith, but then seems to say other things like that we are saved through the obedience-of-faith (like Daniel Fuller). This confusion has been a consistent problem throughout his ministry and on his writings. As you mentioned, much of this is a consequence of his minimizing the cov of works/cov of grace contrast, as well as the law/Gospel contrast. Sadly there are many in reformed circles who are adamant that "the law always comes in the context of grace" ,(i.e., 3rd use) without allowing the 1st use. It seems therefore that Piper expects the law, with its conditional language, to be met by a believer for their "final salvation."

Would love to hear your thoughts on Heidelberg Q. 86:
Since then we are delivered from our misery, merely of grace, through Christ, without any merit of ours, why must we still do good works?
Answer. Because Christ, having redeemed and delivered us by his blood, also renews us by his Holy Spirit, after his own image; that so we may testify, by the whole of our conduct, our gratitude to God for his blessings, and that he may be praised by us; also, *that every one may be assured in himself of his faith, by the fruits thereof*; and that, by our godly conversation, others may be gained to Christ.
    -
It sounds like you're saying people shouldn't find any "assurance in himself of his faith, by the fruits thereof."
Understand that answering the assurance question is NOT just a matter of pointing people to rest by faith in the right object - Christ, the objective grounds of assurance - but also giving people a way to discern *whether or not they have actually done that.* After all, salvation isn't automatic. If resting in Christ alone by faith is sufficient for salvation (and it certainly is), how can I have assurance unless I know I'm exercising saving faith? How do I know I've believed in a saving way - even the demons "believe" and shudder? This is where fruit and self-examination come in and where you seemed to be reluctant to go when it comes to assurance.
    R. Scott Clark gets it right:
"It is entirely appropriate and even necessary, however, for the believer to find encouragement that he does actually believe by observing the evidences, however small and inadequate they may be in this life, that yes the Spirit of God has given him new life. We begin with the objective, the promises of God represented to us in the preached gospel and the gospel made visible in the sacraments. We are baptized people. We are being nourished by the body and blood of Christ. We are received in the church as members in good standing. We do see ourselves for what we are by nature: sinners. We acknowledge that and seek our standing before God only in what Christ has done for us. We are grieved by our sins."
    Hope this helps.

@Basil Conway Actually, John Piper is totally butchering every one of the texts he quotes in this video, and these brothers are being VERY gentle and very kind. Allow me to be blunt. John Piper is preaching totally false doctrine in this footage. The narrow gate is NARROW, not because it's difficult to get into, but because there is only ONE way. "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. NO MAN GETS TO THE FATHER BUT BY ME." Jesus tells us in John 10 that he IS the narrow gate. Anyone seeking to enter by ANY other way, BUT BY HIM is a thief and a robber. It's not narrow because you gotta work for it, as this man would suggest. It's narrow and few find it because there are so many men like JOHN PIPER who are trying to get in by SOME OTHER WAY.
As for the original posters comment, my question is this: how many good works are required to be sufficient as evidence? Further, what about all the good works of the unbeliever? Should they be seen as "evidence" of saving faith? Unbelievers, Muslims, and even pagans do lots of good works. So, how exactly are we supposed to use good works as "evidence" of anything? All this is teaching is for people to get assurance based on SELF righteousness, and not CHRIST'S righteousness. When will people who claim to be Christians learn that Christ is the SAVIOR? You all call Him Savior, but none of you actually believe He is doing the saving. It's a joke.

Great job, but I think you a bit easy on piper. If you really think about it his message negates salvation by grace through faith alone., because the whole message is based on salvation by sanctification. He say if you don't see enough sanctification in your life you were never justified. So really by his theory, the justification means nothing because we can't claim it on Christ's finished work alone. So when piper asks if you creating that kind of urgency in your congregation, it need be asked, urgency to " do" what? If he honest he would have to say urgency to put good works in your life and avoid sin so that maybe you could you can be saved. Which his message he should ask, are you creating that kind of dout in your congregations. Pipers teaching is just what paul warned of when he say if it of works it not of grace and if it of grace it not of works, the two can not mix when speaking of justification. Piper teaches a confusing mix of catholic infused rightiosnes and Christian imputed rightiosnes. I believe this qualifies as " another gospel"

To me, the problem is still HOW MUCH change? Or, who determines how much change proves salvation. I would think that everyone would have a different idea of what "change" looks like. God may be changing someone on the inside but it hasn't manifested on the outside, so others might think that person never changed. Also, the Bible says that some bear more fruit than others. Those with more fruit tend to believe that people who don't bear as much fruit are not saved. And, those who bear little fruit might think that someone is more spiritual than they are, even though they might not even be saved! Wolves in sheeps clothing can appear to be bearing a lot of fruit! I think that's why Paul tells the Corinthians that they were being carnal by comparing their spirituality among themselves and that the only thing that they should look at is whether they were in Christ because that is the only thing that unites believers. Comparing ourselves with any other measure is divisive.

@TS, the Apostle Paul wrote that Christians were no longer under the pedological use of the Law ( condemnation). The Galatian Judaizers wanted to place people back under the Law ( as a covenant of works) for justification. Confessional Protestants ( Lutheran and Reformed) see the Ten Commandments as the standard of right and wrong, and a norm for Christian life. To claim Christians are no longer under the Ten Commandments for a way of living.......is the broad evangelical understanding.....and the definition of antinominianism.

@@carmensiekierke3579 Antinominianism Is a name that's used as a labeling that is usually commonly meant to try to dissuade someone from dying to the law ..
You say that you need to use the 10 commandments as a way of daily living Paul the apostle taught the very opposite...
Galatians 2:19 ( For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live for God. )
If you have not died to the law but are just going around labeling people that have as antinomian then you're not living for God either..
To live for God according to the scripture is to die to the law not having a side ongoing affair with it for the purpose of a moral guide..
The apostle Paul warns about using the law as a moral guide...
Romans 7:8 ( 8But sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me [m]coveting of every kind; for apart [n]from the Law sin is dead. 9I was once alive apart [o]from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died; 10and this commandment, which was [p]to result in life, proved [q]to result in death for me; 11for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it, killed me. )
When the apostle Paul was under the law thou shall not covet it produced covetousness in him of every kind that law mental conceptualization is administration of death and does not produce one ounce of justification righteousness sanctification or life if you believe that it does you are bewitched..
When we are justified by faith before God that's how we live on a daily basis throughout our entire life ..The galatian error is going back to the law for the perfecting of the flesh you can call it whatever you want third use of the law, progressive sanctification, being a true Christian (non Antinomian ) but its Galatian error that keeps people from actually bearing fruit...
Romans 7:4 ( Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. )
Unless you died to the law there will be no bearing fruit unto God...
Calling it a third use of the law is a magical word game not found in the Bible It's galatian error repackaged and cloaked under another name...
Simply adding third use in front of the word law doesn't change the fact that it's still law that is still existing conceptually in ones mind that you're supposed to die too in order to bear fruit..
      You said this ..
" To claim Christians are no longer under the Ten Commandments for a way of living.......is the broad evangelical understanding.....and the definition of antinominianism. "
This demonstrates to me that you're not living by faith in the son of God...
Galatians 3:12 ( Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them)
See you say that you use the to commandments as a way of daily living but the law is not of faith...
But the Bible says that the just shall live by faith and that is in the son of God you live by your own admission by the law which is not of faith.... So you are not living for God..
Galatians 2:20 ( I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. )
You go head and live by the galatian error looking to the law on a daily basis and call me an antinomian by slander as I live by faith in the son of God independent from the law that i am dead to..

I do a lot of Biblestudy myself and use online resources to stay spiitual healthy and Biblical alive.

We walk into Good works prepared from tbe begining to do! The works that no one could ever do! Only once who have been freed by the reall Gospel can do the works of the Gospel!
All you will lead people into Good works of your own making!
God Created good works and to be part of them you need to become alive, free from sin condemnation, fear, death, guilt, persuets of holliness and obidience and repentences, and fully fully trust Your God, if His right arm has Done it all.... then it is finished......
Do not try to please apease God who is the spirit, you becoming a spirit child of his is the Only work He admires because you accepted what His Son came to offer
Fulll forgiveness and on its bases you are to believe and recieve the Life of Jesus in turn you gave up died to the old self... old flesh person of sin has died... and you are a new creation " spirit " you are spirit and now you can worship a God who is a Spirit by agreeing with His truth, You accept his reality, what Hs says you are...,
If you keep saying that you are a sinner after you became a Child of God then you do not yet agree with Gods reality..,,,
We need to trust God and allow him to love, love, deeply love us from with in and that will mature US into the image he prdestined us to confrom to as His sons🙃🙃

Wow really.... 1 john 1:8-9 is not for a believer but to an agnostic who denies the bodily resurection and the Original sin which was done in the flesh so then one who comes a relative who comes to redeeem
Has to be relative and flesh to undo what was done in the flesh
It speaks of someone denying that they have sined at all hence they need someone to redeem forgive them...
1 john 1:8-9 is spoken to unbelivers who are being invited to Agree
With God and they will be clensed of all unrightesness
1 john 2:1 speaks to believers
There is no need for a believer to confess on goingly their sins to recieve more and more fogiveness....
All forgiveness was dispurced on the cross 2000 ago!! You either believe it or it and agree with God or you deny it and your calling God a lier who said " it is finished - paid in full"
A believer needs not to confess meaning seek repentence on going repentence....
Because payment for sin is Blood... Gods economy is Blood not Wors of apology..... other wise your minimizing the Dangerousness of sin.....
    Sin payment death......
If you continually ask for forgiveness your asking Jesus to continually bleed for you.... and He has delt with sin Once and will not be concerned with it again...

Hebrew Paul warns Those who went under the Law again Hw warns them that if you dont think that One sacrefice is enough to take away pay for all past future present sins then you will live in fear... in Fear that God is a God of all consuming fire..... it is a warning for People that Choose not to believe
The sin which is talked in the whole letter is a SIN of desbelief for which there is no Sacrefice.,, because the sin of disbelief is a rejection of the Only criteria Given in the New covenent by which a person is to become Alive, the criteria is " Believe the Gospel"
That all sins are forgiven past future present 2000 years ago and You believe agree with God that it has been paid in full and You will recieve the Holly spirit which will make you alive... and because there remains no Sin that was not " propitiated for" then There is no more Death for a believer who places the trust on to the Lord Jesus because " the law lf sin that causes deaht pays you in death is abolished by the Law of Spirit giving life through " beliving accepting the Gospel which is the power

Jesus did not preAch anything new.... the words given to Him by father He spoke nothing of His own.,,, duetoronomy 15:18

Law any kind stays before the door way! After a believer enters He is lead by the Love, Spirit of Christ that was made
Possible due to the invocation of the new covenent
