Armand Assante's character arc e is truly one of the gems of this movie. He went from doubting Columbus, downplaying his importance, even working against him, to eventually seeing the errors of his ways and truly realizing the greatness of what Columbus has achieved in the very end of the movie.
The focus on Sanchez's face as he realizes Columbus' words are true, mixed against Vangelis' emotionally evocative soundtrack makes this one of the best moments of the movie.
Today we seem to underestimate Columbus feat in crossing an uncharted ocean when in fact his achievement is equal to landing a man on the moon. Only he did it with little more than great courage and conviction.
The black legend created by England and the Netherlands undermined the age of discovery started by Colon and Spain. I think the discovery of a new continent is one of the greatest accomplishments in world history. Colon, not Columbus, as he never wrote in Latin or Ligurian (language from Genoa) and the Catholic Queen who believed and supported his project, changed the course of history and the world for good. Of course the British will say the opposite. No. The modern era starts in 1492 with the arrival of Colon in America.
There would’ve be a new world without Colombus, he believed in it, he did it, he made it to the new world. Although he wasn’t the first to reach the Americas, he was the first to reach the new world. He did it, I’m glad he has the credit for it in modern day.
In our current climate, people try to heap praise upon Leif Erikson for being "first." I defend Columbus because the Vikings only had to sail from Iceland to Canada. Spain to Guanahani Island (Bahamas) is a *much* longer trip than what the Vikings had to endure. The Vikings didn't plant roots and begin a civilization. The Spaniards did. We in the western hemisphere owe everything to Don Cristobal Colon, the Admiral of the Ocean Seas.
First let's call him in the appropriate way: Cristobal Colon because he always wrote in Spanish language, he never used Latin or Ligur (the language from Genoa, a Spanish territory in the century XV). We shouldn't call him Columbus as he didn't know any Latin and even though Latin was the language of the roman empire, in the century XV the roman empire was long gone. Colon spent most of his life in modern Spain (Castilla). All his written communication is in Spanish language with some Portuguese/ catalan words. In his lifetime nobody cared about him. Nowadays every country wants him as their hero, mostly Italy. Italy didn't exist in the century XV. Genoa was part of the Aragon kingdom. 3/4 parts of modern Italy have been part of the Spanish Empire. Colon showed his project to the king of Portugal, the other rich nation in the world but he turned it down. Queen Isabel I of Castilla believed, funded and supported Colon's project which brought glory and power to Spain starting the first truly global empire in history. Secondly, the vikings travel to America and they came back without setting a foot in the land. They didn't claim any lands neither they announced any discovery to the rest of the world, in this case Europe. Colon did when he came back to Spain. Thirdly the expression 'New World' created by the British it's a name to replace the term 'America'. The English settlers arrived in northamerica (present USA) in 1607 but that was 115 years after Colon arrival. We, Europeans, understand history in the sense that there is only 1 continent, not 2, so Colon and Spain first set foot in 1492. We normally divide the continent in 3 subcontinents: north, central and south. In northamerica the Spanish arrived beginning of the century XVI and the first language spoken in those lands was Spanish. The discovery of a new continent made other nations envy of Spain. Spain created the international commerce (Mexico - Manila) at a very large scope. Other nations came to the new continent to try to copy Spain, mostly England, France and the Nerherlands however they all failed in building a similar empire. Britain won't build up its empire until 1815 after defeating Napoleon. Spain hold his empire for 400 years. Possibly the history of Spain is one of the greatest, if not the greatest in world history, despite what the British say. Spain was to America what Rome had been to Spain: progress, civilization, culture, religion etc
During his lifetime nobody cared for Colon. Nowadays every nation claim his as their hero. Italy mostly. It does no matter where Cristobal Colon came from, whether he was Spanish catalan from Sardinia, Portuguese or Genovese. He got his project approved by the Catholic Queen Isabel I of Castilla, the greatest Queen in history who believed in his project. Credit to Colon, to Queen Isabel, to Spain. The discovery is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) accomplishments in world history. Always diminished and underestimated by the British propaganda. Colon spent mostnof his life in Castilla (modern Spain). All his written communication is in Spanish with some catalan and Portuguese words. He never used Latin neither ligur (the language of Genoa). Genoa was part of Spain in the century XVI. Colon signed all his written communications as Cristobal Colon, not Columbus (latin) not Colombo (italian). The discovery of the new continent, the west Indies, later renamed America, belongs to Spain, no other nation. From this moment, Spain will create the first truly global empire for 400 years.
Ok crossing the Atlantic and coming upon the new world is impressive on Columbus’ part but it’s not as impressive as John Gotti traveling back in time to medieval Spain.
Actually the Portuguese DID IT, Columbus was trained in Portugal on how to sail in the "Volta ao mar" which is to use the northern ocean gyre in order to get back to Europe from far out of sea travels. Without this sailing knowledge Columbus could of never made his 1492 voyage. The Portuguese were in the Canadian coast decades before Columbus reached hispaniola. The discovery of the Madeira islands and then the Azores islands were the most important discovery of the last 500 years. Without these 2 locations not even the Portuguese would of reached the Brazilian coastline on the way to South Africa coast into India. The new evidence and details now put the Portuguese on record as being in Brazil decades before they announced to Spain for the Treaty of Tordesillas ( Dividing the North and South of the West between Spain and Portugal. The Portuguese kept Brazil hidden from Spain so the Treaty would go in their Favour. The Norseman made smaller trips to the coast of Canada, but the Portuguese never discovered any settlements of any kind during their 1430's trips out to the Canadian Coastlines. It's pretty simple really without the work of the Portuguese sailing techniques THERE IS NO NEW WORLD. The discovery of the North and South Atlantic ocean gyres by the Portuguese allowed the world to move 200 years into the future overnight!!. Remember this all these trips were financed by the same "Royals" criminals who are put on Magazines and celebrated in 2020.
James Valentino Columbus was Genoan and grew up in Portugal, it is where he learned how to sail in the open ocean. He married his Portuguese wife for convenience as she was the daughter of wealthy parents from the Madeira islands. Madeira islands were a critical stop port before heading to Brazil and to the West Indies. The Volta Ao Mar is still being used today in 2020, big tankers and cargo ships rely on the Atlantic North and Southern gyres for their routes. All oceans have their own Gyres and these are critical to know for shipping lanes as they cut on fuel costs for engine power. Interesting these Gyres have not changed and have been the same since the Portuguese first use them back in the 1300’s.
@@danfuerthgillis4483 Thanks for the info, though you and I may disagree as to who Columbus really is. I still hold he was Portuguese for numerous reasons. Hopefully you will give them some thought. He would not have been allowed to marry a Portuguese noble, nor sail on a Portuguese ship as a foreigner. He spoke little Italian and wrote to his financial bankers there in Latin. He named around 40 Caribbean islands Portuguese names. There is no evidence he ever peddled his ideas to European monarchs. It is interesting you mentioned his wife for the theory is that his grandfather was the founder of the Madeira's. Have you seen the ideas as to his sigla? There is much more. Admittedly its all speculation, but fascinating anyway. Either way he was a talented navigator and brave man. Have a super day.
James Valentino Columbus worked for Portugal and Spain as they financed his earlier trial trips. The reason why he Married to the nobility was so that he could be viceroy easier with any lands he found. He was sailing supplies from Madeira to the main land, so he had business dealings there. His wife is the key to the financing of the trips, but the Portuguese were already around the top of Africa so they knew it was pointless heading to the west, because Portugal had already been to Brazil around 1460. Portugal kept Brazil secret from Spain so that they could sign the treaty of tortesilas with Spain and keep Brazil. So in 1500 Brazil was already known decades prior, they announced the discovery after the treaty was signed lol. The north and South Atlantic gyres were taught to Columbus by Portuguese sailors, without this knowledge winds can’t help you on the return back, the current will take you back to the Azores which was the last critical step to make a round trip. Still it is highly improbable that Columbus hit Hispaniola on the first trip, just as Pedro Cabral hit Brazil on the first trip. I believe these official trips were land claim trips to cement the kingdoms authority over it, these official trips were made with previous known landings. Portugal was already in Canada in 1452 decades before Cabott’s trip in 1497. I believe all countries lied about their trips so they could keep those lands as part of deals.
@@Jimi2222 Both Spain and specially Portugal no doubt deserve massive credit for launching us out of the middle ages. It's astonishing that Spain had basically the upper North America continent ( except Canada) in their grip. Spain left a massive legacy in what is now the USA. The 2 smallest countries in Southern Europe had the balls to move us out of the middle ages. They laid the path and maps so that others could follow, Portugal lost interest in the West and moved to the East for Colonies, while Spain spent all their resources trying to hold the USA.
