Great videos, i alike every other mako owner experienced the same issue. I just re routed my cables like you did, and reolaced with brake cable. Workd of a difference i cant beleive riot didnt forsee this problem
I’ve had the same issue with the steering and the one thing i really dislike about this kayak company is that you can’t get a hold of anyone. I’ve called several times and no answer. I’ve email them several times and no response. I’m sure if I purchase something they will respond or at least I hope they would. I’ll try the new rudder line. Thanks for your video!
I know nothing about Kayaks but what I see you have done makes sense. Less bends less friction. Last day of fishing in area 9 today. I'll be doing different kinds of videos, until May lingcod season. Thanks for sharing all your videos .
Nice job. Brett is a jack of all trades. I haven't pulled the trigger on a kayak. Mainly it's that price concern but not wanting to go low cost and cheap. You know, get what you paid for and regret it. I hadn't seen this one yet. I will have to go back and find your original reviews on this one.
Great perspective on the Kayak, also really like the idea of doing a year review. Really says a lot more about the product after using it a long time, rather than first impressions.
Every Riot video I watch there all complaining about the cabling to the rudder. Riot just refuses to address this. They insist you DIY fix. Even after the new cable handle fix the rout to the rudder is a mess. IDK I'm very skeptical to purchase this kayak even if it is at a good price.
How is it going with the drilled hole idea? Does not hurt that the cable is not going straight back like it was under the seat? I need to put on new one and want to make sure how it's going?
So long as you seal it there is no problem. One thing you can do is fill the hole and then thread the plastic through so there is sealer on the other side. The seal the top. The sealer does a good job. For something above the water line it isn't a big deal. I didn't seal my hole for the fish finder power and didn't get too much water. One time I didn't put the plug back in at the back and even after 4 hours of kayaking in rough water it only filled the inside of the kayak half way. A lot of water but that is a big hole!

Are you comfortable with using a pedal system canoe? Has the pedal system ever broken down? Is pedaling tiring? Does the canoe get water into it?
The pedal system is great. I have gotten tired from pedaling but I went on a 10 mile trip. The only way water get in is if you don't put the plugs or covers on properly. The pedals haven't broken down for me but there are spare parts to order from their website if it does.
They're 6 inches from the back of the control. I don't recall the hole size but put the drill bit next to the cable on a table and see if they are the same height. Drill hole and try that. Maybe go one size bigger.
Hate to say it, I bought my Kayak last year and it has the new steering unit and mine just finally broke today. I do have a question; you drilled that hole to put the line in without the 90 degree turns but now the lines are running straight back...any issue so far? I want to do that as well but want to make sure. Thank you
Sorry to hear that. I haven't had any problems so far. I think it makes a difference because those 2 90 degree turns put a lot more tension on the steel wire. One thing I thought to try is using downrigger braid instead of the bike cables.

Thank-you. You will still have issues like I did probably. Check out my 3 year review. I upgraded the steering to something much better.

That is frustrating.

Interested in seeing what you get up to. Look forward to the ling videos.
Thank you for the video. I have a lost creek kayak as well and the steering is sometimes pretty stubborn. This should definitely fix my problems.
Only thing that was wrong with the kayak. I'm just glad they found a fix.
Welcome, thanks for sharing the video

The more expensive kayaks I don't think it's worth it. Might as well just get a boat.

Thanks. Stuff breaks so quickly these days good to know what will hold up over time.
I like how honest review and tips you give for those that own those kind of kayaks
Buddy had similar steering issues! Looks like a good fix!
Hope this fix helps him.
Always good to have these types of videos for people who have similar setups
Thanks for the info. I dont have a kayak but I hope this helps someone
Hope the new steering set up preforms better for you. Tight lines my friend!
Should. Still have to take it fishing though.
Glad to see the kayak is working out for you, and the problems seem to be fixed. Looks like they did right by you. Cheers dude, solid review.
Hopefully that new set up works good for you. Nice job!👍
Thanks.
You did an excellent job. Congratulations on your success!
Great set-up, Where did you buy the cables?
Thanks. Link is in the description.
Nice design improvement and ingenious alternate installation and modification. Sounds like a good value yak!

Can you tell me how far back from the rail and size holes you drilled for the controls rerouted

nice toy for more videos and fish on the Salmon games.....

This issue is so bad its just a real turn off. I cant believe the amount of folks complaining about this and its still not fixed.
Nice video. New friend here. .
Is the new rudder control still holding up well?
It's better than it was before but I still have to replace the cables once in a while.
Where do I find one of those newer style handles?
boutiqueborealdesign.com/collections/components/products/steering-kit-for-mako?variant
The new set up sucks too. Turning left binds the cable up almost makes it impossible to turn left
Unbelievable so many complaints about this rudder system.
@@dkat1108 oh you have no idea. It broke in 3 days. An the kayak has already cracked by the handle
Steering on these things ruins the kayak. I put on the new one and it broke in a month
Shitty.
