I have this same exact model xB in manual, bought new in 2009 and still going strong with no issues at 200.000 miles. At 6ft I still have plenty of leg and head room both in front and back. Still a pleasure to drive and remains my fav over all vehicles i ever owned. Had some oil consumption until Toyota dealer completed the overhaul fix at no charge to me. It doesn't use a drop of oil now between changes. I feel confident I could get another 200k out of this Scion.

I have a 2015 with manual transmission. I only paid $11,000 3 years ago, at an actual Toyota dealer. Insane Deal with 31k! Now 43k. Fun practical car. Great Video. Did not know about the headphones in trunk. I think it’s the best of this class. It was rated highest satisfaction recently out of other used cars in it’s class at Consumer Guide. The later the model, the lower the chances of oil consumed.
I like the styling, build quality, ride height, reliability, instrument cluster, fun seat upholstery (later models after 2010), great heater, space, good crash test ratings.
I do not like the rear pillars. Shifter a little chunky. Lack of heated seats (got $11 Walmart pad, works well enough). Lack of sunroof. So So MPG (mid 20’s)

I really enjoy my 2012 9.0 RS Scion xB. No oil consumption issues. I get compliments for it sometimes. In "hot lava" my neighbors kids love it- and strangers at the grocery store. It's a very original and fun car. If you add just the HPS intake, you increase hp by 7 and torque by 8. It's worth it. Reliable. Cuts down 0 to 60.

Was thinking about buying a Honda Hrv or a Scion Tc but I may just get a Scion XB. Very underrated car that will last a long time. If I can find one with a manual transmission I will have to seriously considered getting it.

I had a Toyota Camry with the same engine..
I have a 2009 Scion XB knowing they share the same engine transmission and weight....I prefer the scion for this is much more simple...the power steering system is the key difference for me...the scion has more road feel ... it feels like manual steering and I love it..
This is what I always said about the Camry..."IT IS A PERFECT CAR, EXCEPT FOR THE STEERING...THE CAMRY HAS THE VARIABLE ASSISTANCE AND I PREFFER THE SIMPLE xb.

Toyota really should have offered a roof rack option for the xb, just focusing on no frills bare bones transportation didn't increase sales.

We are looking at one now with 89,000 miles. How can I tell if it has the oil consumption problem? I don't want to be replacing catalytic converters or an engine any time soon.

There’s a couple of ways; You add oil and drive it, check the oil level and spark plugs. If the spark plugs are burnt, that’s a way to detect oil consumption.

The oil consumption issues were from 2008 - 2010. The piston rings were too small, so oil would seep through. If the car is under recall Toyota ( its been awhile now) would fix the issue with larger piston rings. If your recall is over just add oil every 2k miles and you're good.
