The story of 'Oumuamua, the first visitor from another star system | Karen J. Meech | TED
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лип 2018
- In October 2017, astrobiologist Karen J. Meech got the call every astronomer waits for: NASA had spotted the very first visitor from another star system. The interstellar comet -- a half-mile-long object eventually named `Oumuamua, from the Hawaiian for "scout" or "messenger" -- raised intriguing questions: Was it a chunk of rocky debris from a new star system, shredded material from a supernova explosion, evidence of alien technology or something else altogether? In this riveting talk, Meech tells the story of how her team raced against the clock to find answers about this unexpected gift from afar.

The first visitor we’ve seen in the small area of endless space we’ve been watching for 20 years out of eternity
At my University we got to listen to a physicist speak. It was one of the most amazing and interesting lectures I've ever attended/heard. After he was done lecturing, he opened it up for questions. Most of the questions were about intelligent life. I stood in line waiting for my turn at the microphone. My question was simple, do you believe there is intelligent life in our known universe? He was surprised it took so long for someone to ask this question, so he turned it on me and asked me to answer it first. My answer was this: there are 100 billion Stars in our galaxy, and there are over 2 trillion galaxies in the known universe. There are approximately 6 billion earth-like planets that we know of in just our galaxy alone.. Which means there are a countless number of earth-like planets in the known universe. To shorten it up, I stated that it is mathematically impossible that we are the only planet and not just our known universe, but right here in the Milky Way galaxy where life took hold. And even if less than 1% of those planets where life took hold has intelligent life, then there are trillions and trillions of planets with intelligent life in the known universe. And how many of those civilizations are a thousand years more advanced than us? Or 50,000 years? Or a million years? Or even a billion years? So of course I believe that there is intelligent life that has the capability of cruising by Earth to check out what's going on with the youngsters... Let's just say he agreed...
I agree 100%. It’s like we would be pretty naïve to think anything less. Well put! ☮️
He agreed because, its not him to say it, i think or its just again a test for the public to see how are they reacting to theses.
Fantastic 👏👏👏

I totally agree with you 👍
Karen J. Meech - what a GREAT SPEAKER, so clear and concise. A great example of a true teacher.
Due to the small fraction of time that humans have been on earth, I would hesitate to say that this is the 1st "visitor" to our solar system. Rather, it would be the 1st to be viewed by humans.
I think everyone understands that
First viewed by them maybe. But definitely not the first by humans.
It was not viewed as far as I know.
They do not even know the actual shape.
human history has written about this interaction since the dawn of humanity... wtf smh
it’s the first *confirmed* visitor from another star system
Man... we all need astronomy talks like this in our lives to keep us humble & remind us of how small we really are.
Keep making stuff like this, TED. I'll watch it all.
Dr. Zoidberg Neil deGross Tyson said that when he learns about the universe he feels large, because we’re made from the same chemical properties as the rest of the universe. “We are star dust” people should feel small compared to the unversed feel privileged to be a part of it, especially to exist as a being that can experience it however briefly
You should also thank the astronomers, not only the platform.

NotAWesternSpy
I like what you said.
Heresay
see if this astronomer was my astronomy teacher, i wouldn’t have dropped out of it at all because she just refascinated me about our solar system and I hope she gets the things she wants so that we’re ready for another solar visitor and she can be satisfied to learn about the things she loves this karen deserves the world
Why did they fire a nuclear missile at them! My contact told me they communicated in PEACE?
Your astronomy teacher probably had to teach his beloved subject to multiple classes everyday for years. That has to get tiresome after a while and then people lose interest of it.
Not the "it was the teachers fault"
Mmmm you’re probably just lazy. See I put time into my class and passed it with an A. You need to study more
This once again shows how we are part of this big Universe we all live in. If just everyone of us was aware of this fact there would be less war, hunger, pain, suffering, misery. Thank you for sharing this beautiful observation Karen.

"Very close to the earth...and we didn't know about it" ....that quote is pretty frightening.
Karen C if it was an alien and they’ve discovered a way to travel through space and time, then don’t be frightened, if they’re going to attack you’ll be dead before you realize.
Stoney It is not about an alien attack or someshit like that. It is about some weird astrological object which can hit earth and destroy the life for good. I mean i dont know if we can answer such a thing even if we know it is coming but still not knowing is more fearsome.
Happens all of the time.
What do you expect us cave man do about it.
We just die when it hits next time around.
what about that house sized meteor that struck us in greenland in august 2018, next to our air base. We didn't see that one coming either.

She did not say it was an interstellar craft though….it is.
Thoughts are nothing but intelligent beings who can communicate with the human subconscious. When you start to hear thoughts those are aliens from another dimension communicating with you. Choose your speaker wisely. Because these entities speak through you whenever you give them the authority to talk. Sometimes these beings are so powerful that they over take your mind without you even knowing and you become a fluent vessel for them to use so that they can communicate with other subconscious, and create different realities by using you. Every time a thought arises in your mind you are being contacted by extraterrestrial entities who travel using energy that all living and non living things can feel. Yes non living things feel to. Why does Havard have the lowest written language skills of any university of the planet? ATRUTH they are not equiped to articulate observable presence as many are. Is this why Harvard educations get better jobs, get to play with higher more influential techno;ogies. If this person acceptd communications from those of us less influential, and that it is against the very laws that govern and permit operations in space. To fire a nuclear missle at such a benevolent and molevslent people.

About a week later I saw the same ship in a hanger at their area 51, some technician trying to pry it open wearing a protective suit. I was told over 6000 such spacecraft have been abducted by mankinds military......

I even told the universe if you ever give me a child I hope it's when I'm 25, not too young, not too old. I had her on her due date, and she was conceived when I was 25. She is literally a Star Child. Ever since her birth there have been the most amazing occurrences in the Cosmos. She was born into the greatest time of science and I couldn't be happier. I hope she is just as passionate about it as her momma. Sorry it's long if anyone reads this. I also pronounce her name like in the movie, The Golden Compass, the first book of His Dark Materials. Books riddled with alternate realities, space dust, dark matter, which has a consciousness and Lyra can actually communicate with them.

You got to see first hand the power of the human spirit, and now that you have birthed a universe inside a human body that you named to be Lyra, please always remember she now has her own life and her own dream to create and live within and has the gift from free will to do so. Αλέξης Ανδρικόπουλος i disagree with what you preposed they made objects "gods" not because of there lack of knowledge but with the observed changes to there world so no this wouldn't be even considered
EZCAPE Records. True, unadvanced doesn't mean stupid
EZCAPE Records true they were very intelligent cause as far as we know they didnt let technology turn them lazy or zombies probably cause they knew better. Probably cause they followed Gods laws instead of making there own

Yessssss
That was exciting to listen. I can spend hours on end listening to such exciting scientific stuff ! Thank you madam for the crisp narration !! 👌👌
The relatively new uap footage of the smaller disc shaped object was rotating as the pilot exclaimed in amazement. Strange similarity: just an observation.
I seen it took over two hrs to pass by the beach had lights with windows and it seemed like one huge city or even a big nation in it
Excellent presentation of a very exciting event. Thank you to all who assisted in bringing this information to us. May our scientists continue to gain more insight into this mysterious object & others like it. We need to be more vigilant regarding early detection of what could be a life extinction event.
