- If you are considering getting your HGV class 2 and want to know what working as an HGV driver is like then feel free to give this video a watch. I talk a bit about my first days of HGV diving. Stay tuned for updates.
Let it all out my friend. Your one of the key workers keeping us all going during the pandemic. Keep strong mate! Best wishes from Scotland👍👍
I have my class 2 for over 2 years and the 1st month was the hardest. 14 hours days easily. Now I can do my route in 11 hours and all you need is to is get the experience in driving and doing deliveries. It will all come in time
Thanks mate. It's really hard in the beginning but it's encouraging to hear that it gets better with time.
Do you get paid for those 14 hours or no cos of taking long
@@Bilal-wj7bh ur on salary mate
Honest video Davidoff. In my opinion if you have more good days than bad you’re on a winner.
Trucking not for everyone and multi drop is hard graft but you’re more than capable 👍.
Being nice doesn’t cost anything other people are just venting stress, just let it flow.
Happy, Safe Trucking Bro 👍
I used to be a bus driver easily doing 65+ hours a week. Getting shouted etc . So I'm doing my class 1 in about 5 weeks can't wait . Passed my hazard and theory test . Can't wait to get back into driving again
An update I passed my practical on 5th August and start my new job as an hgv class1 driver on the 12th September can't wait . I'd say to anyone thinking about it just do it
@@paulosgood5565 How's work being a class 1 like? are you working through agency or full time contract.
Amazing video's and 110% authentic.. lovely personality as well... Thanks for the advice.. I am a bus driver on my way to the HGV world!!
David, I passed my class on on the 10th May 1972, yeah I know, old guy. My best advice I can give you is get your C+E I do a 12:00 start Monday to Friday, one drop, 204 mile round trip, back in yard by 22:00. Double deck trailer with car parts. On fixed rate of £36k..... good luck m8.
Give us a job matey
I still remember doing my Class 2, first job driving a refuse collection route in Wellingborough! Worked agency because i used agency for driving forklift before my first hgv rest. Did my class 1 C+E about a year later, did just about everything i was offered, including 'tippers', or 'gravel trucks' as they say here in Canada. Did about 4 1/2 years driving in UK, now in my 11th year driving Super B 2 trailer combination here in BC. I used the extra money i earned driving HGV to pay for annual visits here and an immigration lawyer, plus all the fee's etc. I owe everything i have to making that first step with doing my HGV. My respect to anyone who does a multidrop job driving on a digicard, does that still exist! I used to do milk trunking for Wisemans, several times i would have to stop outside the gate and pull my card out, as my time elapsed as i pulled up! Now i use an actual logbook, write in biro all my activities! It's like a parallel universe sometimes!
The company I was with put me through my class 2 so I was doing multi drop work for about a month then they put me through my class 1 and then started trunking. Only ever had 2 runs so was a doddle! Did that for a few years now I'm on heavy haulage, absolutely love this job! Can see me doing this for quite some time!
Definitely I'd go for your class 1 if you get the chance, opens up a tonne of new doors 🤘
I plan to, get my class 1 next year..........i don't mind the hours as there's plenty of work....
I was just like this in class 2. Used it to gain a little experience while waiting for my class 1 test. Compared to Class 1 looking back now, class 2 is deff the worst, I have easy days even though still 12 hours but lots of rest time due to unloads etc. Keep your chin up :)
I’m a fleet mechanic and I’m regularly turn up on site and get spoken to like dirt. Unfortunately a lot of peaple seem to have a chip on there shoulder and are arseholes at the moment. Keep at it bro and keep a positive attitude there are some nice peaple about.
Well, not all people are like that. I guess I'll learn to deal with it and not let it affect me emotionally.
I just got my licence and just started , got a job offer for a bread delivery company and the pay is ok for a new starter as a class 2 . 3-4 am till about 10-11 am , driving about 5-6 hrs so I can`t complain and get paid for 10 hrs and 30 min(4 on 3 off)
Just starting out in the job. Thanks for the advice.
You're welcome. Good luck!!! How are you finding it? I will keep the updates coming. Just waiting for some camera gear to arrive.
Grand just need to build up experience.
Thanks Davidoff, an interesting view point on the life of HGV! I have always found that work is better if you can ensure you get some pleasure out of it. Job satisfaction and travelling in beautiful countryside work wonders. Money helps but is not everything. Problems with folk always crop up, live with them or ignore them, never let them get you down.
I wonder how you are getting on now? perhaps I will have a chase through to find out.
An interesting video. How people treat you is a reflection of them, not you. Always be true to yourself.
Thanks! That's the truth.
Loving it David!
🙄
😆
not to sound rude but do you get overtime when doing more hours? does the overtime rate increase? can they just spring weekends on you and does that include overtime or increase?
Thanks
Thank you for your comment! I think it all depends on which company you are working for. I get a fixed rate which was agreed before I started work. Since I'm working through an agency, I'm more in control of when I want to work but I have to give them notice of when I'm available to work. They will then make a roster to let people know when they are required. I do work weekends but I don't like to work on Sundays.
21 drops wow 😯 that’s mental
I find you can handle the long hours on multi drop initially but it starts to wear you down after a year when your enthusiasm and energy for something new wears off. Pay rates are ok because you are working almost 2 weeks in one compared to a normal worker. You don't see that many old multidrop drivers, most of them are in class 1 having a kip while waiting to be unloaded and getting in their 60-70 hours weeks with PoA
I'm thinking of getting my class 1 in a few months when I'm comfortable with the rigid.
Thanks for your comment!!
If you can get on the milk tankers farm collection. Easy work if you can get it. No city centres a bonus
Swear i seen you at WTTL congratulations on your pass, I believe you smashed it
Were you going for the arctic? I didn't exactly smash it but I passed on the first try with 9 minors. Jason was the lad who smashed it. He passed with 0 minors!!!
Thanks mate!
@@truckerdavidoff6093 still really good and yeah I was doing the artic passed 2nd time 😁 3 faults
Congratulations on the pass! All the best mate.
Build up your experience, all good for your resime, better times lie ahead .
just remember you are able to do 3 reduced rests in a shift and a max of 60hrs work in a week. a reduced rest is if you work over 13hrs in a 24hr period. If your planners are telling you to go out for longer then they are breaking the law as will you be, so be carful.
Get out of multidrop as soon as you can. There are plenty of hgv jobs doing doing one drop per day or if you want about 4 drops per day. Less stress and more fun driving, instead of starting and stopping!
Hi mate just wondering if youre doing agency work or are full time with a company? If you find it being to many hours or to hard work dont be afraid to look for diffrent work mate that suits you better. Theres always easier work out there in the hgv industry 👍🏼 good luck mate :)
Hello mate hows you? And are you still driving after leaving that crap job in the video?
Hey mate. Doing well thanks. I'm working as a RORO driver now. Enjoying it!
"I try to be as friendly as I can" < I think there's the problem mate. Lots of people see kindness as a weakness. Many who work in depots are just hostile. They live for moments when they can say - look at that muppet, see what he did?. I make it a rule now not to be nice or friendly until the other person has done so. Do not be afraid to show your teeth when need be (and by that I don't mean smiling!). Be more aggressive and stand your ground because that they do understand. It's not a driving thing it's a British thing, dog eat dog, that's why the economy is so healthy (but our society is so rotten)
I’ve been class 1 for 33 yrs tramping I’ve just retired my advice to you would be never moan get on with it you eather love it or hate it take yer time if you are on hourly rate no rush
Got my theory on the 17th I'm a brickie have been for 22years just had enough of the tools now
Good on you. I know what it feels like to just have had enough. I was fed up with working on the bins after just 3 years. How are you going about it? I did it with a company called WTTL and they handled everything including medical, theory, and CPC. I paid £1700 for the whole course.
The practical side of things took place over five days with the test on the fifth day.
@@truckerdavidoff6093 same way really mate I already had the entitlement on my licence because I thought about it years ago but never ended up going through with it I think this one was £1850 somewhere near that, that's for everything other than failing
Well, good luck. Have you done your hazard perception yet?
@@truckerdavidoff6093 downloaded an app thing with them on I think it's on the same day as the theory or part of it, or isnt it ? An thanks
It all depends, really... I did all three tests on one day. Theory, CPC, and hazard perception.
Class 1 all the the way multi drop is hard graft to be honest it’s easier driving class I hate class 2 came back to driving after doing shunting for 2 years did agency on class 2 all round Manchester City center vowed never again good luck with your career though 👍
you dont have a wife and you wont get one working all those hours. money or life the choice is yours.
Lorry driving got you so spun you ain't got a clue what day it is....lol
You can see how absolutely shattered I was in that video. Lol. I was completely out of it!
Pleased you left that in! Sleep deprivation is an issue. Scientifically proven that you are a danger to yourself and other road users BEFORE you realise you are tired. Take care my friend and prioritise sleep over anything else when you start out. Sounds like you are doing too many long days to be safe?
I’m sorry you needed to use “lol”
i want to watch your video but that background music is so distracting i have to stop
Sorry about that.
21 Drops is taking the piss mate
I've done 15 Drops mate and not done the Run before and that was a 15 Hour day , my Hat goes off to you mate
Best bit of advice I have for anyone wanting to become a hgv driver is… stay the F… away from class one! If you have a family and children seriously don’t touch class one class two your more likely to be home every night
I guess it's all about choosing your lifestyle. I know there are some class one jobs that offer more suitable hours but it's not easy to find them. I'm working an average of 12 hours a day driving a rigid and I know there are better hours out there. I guess it all comes down to experience.
I was about to getting class 1 but now I will consider your advice Sir
Depends where you work I’m class 1 home every night finish between 4-5 start 6 class 1 doesn’t mean hundreds of hours just find the right job let’s face it there’s enough about
Biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard lol. Take no notice of this comment.
@@Me-oo4yu how? I work on tippers I’m home every night at 5/5.40 pm max! Earn over £650 a week sitting down all day long no strapping no waiting around at rdcs,
I’ve done class one where I’ve waited 6 hours to be tipped! Tramping 4 days out of 5 long distance work mainly… if your home every night on class one then fair play. But 9/10 your tramping
You are unloader... More like warehouse worker.. You do drive but that's obviously not your primary work...
Not doing it anymore. I'm doing 'Roll on-roll off' skips now. I'm actually enjoying it.
not worth it. you get similar or better money working at mcdonald's or aldi stacking shelves. shorter hours, job security, and not a lot to mess up and even if you mess up, you won't go to prison, in an hgv if you mess up, you go to prison. fines, stress, everything. i can see why people leaving the transport industry.
