- It's been a life-long ambition of mine to learn to fly. I've decided to document my Journey to a PPL 1) as a training aid to review my lessons prior to my next flight and 2) to share my experience with anyone interested! This is my first "proper" lesson - Tuesday 5th July. I have decided to learn at Turweston (EGBT) in a PA28 Piper Warrior.
Over the last 6 years, I've had two trial flights (at Coventry) and one 'joy ride' (at Cranfield), but have never been in the position to carry on learning to fly. So technically this isn't my first lesson, but my first “proper” lesson. My excuses for not being able to carry on are - holding down a full-time Engineering career, doing a part-time Engineering degree and saving to get married. Having completed my degree (mostly) and getting married last month, it's game on - PPL here we come!
Since I've always known I wanted to learn to fly - I have been steadily buying the equipment I need so I didn't need to buy it all in one go. The good thing about this approach is that I’ve been able to bag some absolute bargains! E.g. my headset. I had a budget of around £150 to buy a headset - I was torn between a newer, cheaper headset or a used, more expensive headset. After setting up a few eBay notifications for cheap Buy-it-now’s, a barely used Bose A20 set came up for, believe it or not, £140! With the knowledge that I’m protected buying through eBay and PayPal, I hit buy without hesitation. Luckily for me they were exactly as described and are an absolute dream to wear. I am starting with the Active Noise Reduction (ANR) switched off as I don’t believe this is necessary for GA flights and I’d like to be able to hear the noises of the engine and plane as I get to grips with learning to fly. The negative to buying things before they are needed is that some things are now out-dated and will need to be replaced such as one or two training manuals and my chart.
For my first “proper” lesson, I felt it went really well. I got on really well with my instructor. I’d remembered (just about) how to fly straight and level and climb / descend. After having lunch with my instructor, I’d obviously demonstrated I half knew what I was talking about for him to suggest I’d be doing the take-off today - my first ever. This is probably thanks to the numerous UA-cam videos I'd watched whilst on my honeymoon!
My next lesson is booked for next Wednesday 13th July, weather permitting, and will be followed by my Class 2 medical. I’m also reading up on Air Law as I plan to sit this exam within the next few weeks to ensure I’m ready to go solo as soon as my instructor think’s I am ready.
I will try and keep up with the video's throughout my training and beyond. I’m filming using a GoPro Hero4 with suction mount and a special adaptor to capture the headset and ATC audio. If anyone would like any more info on the set up - just drop me a comment below!
Thanks for reading and watching. All comments are welcome. If you’d like to see more please like and subscribe ✈
The instructor is fantastic,5 star rating for him 👌
I must say, apart from one or two personal comments, that instructor is amazing. First flight and student had full controls most of the time. Takeoff and landing. An ace teacher, calm, always instructing and letting the student learn. To have an instructor like that. Great job to the student too. Ace job. Will make a great pilot.
The flight instructor is AMAZING!!!! I wish this guy was in Australia. Mate your very lucky with this guy! AMAZING instructor!
I could feel the nerves on landing. Your instructor is amazing
Well done Simon, I really enjoyed your video, especially at 32:30 when you executed your first take-off, the flight instructor's attitude was awesome, keep up! I am about to begin my ppl soon and I watch videos like this one in order to get fimiliar with it.
as someone who is preparing to start his PPL, I find these videos very helpful. I'm going over Jeppesen's Private Pilot Manual , and this is a huge complementary help. keep up the good work !
Just working through my exams but I'll be back with new videos soon!
Really looking forward to it. Best of luck with the exams !
Simon Cort Yes can’t wait for more
I'm currently getting ready to start my PPL Journey and I've stumbled across your videos. I'm up to #3 and I'm getting so much from watching your videos, also it's getting me very excited to get started myself 👍👍
Also what an instructor he is, I hope mine is as easy going and friendly as this guy. Top man!
Just coming to the end of my flight training at turweston, some great instructors there, probably sat in that exact seat you have, great video.
"So we don't fly over Rachel's house while shes on the plumber..."
Your instructor is amazing, I cannot wait to watch more!
Cheers for sharing your journey, these videos are a massive help on the run up to my first lesson.
"Whilst she's on the blower" (Phone). Although on the plumber is far funnier :)
On the blower. Not the plumber.
As some one who has just purchased the books to learn I have trolled the web for different vids. This is he best I've seen by far
Richie P thanks for your comment! I've tried to be as helpful as possible by using links to the highlights of each lesson. Having a great instructor really helps as well.
I just had lesson 21 yesterday which was revision of Practice Forced Landings as I had a 6 month break, so a few videos to catch up on. I also just booked in my first 2 exams so I have something to aim for.
Best of luck with your PPL, any Q's just give me a shout! Lots of great Facebook groups out there as well.
Yes I look forward to working my way through your vids. I work in aviation as a UAS pilot which will help a little but will still be studying through the books
Really good instructor there!
Your instructor is just fantastic!
A delight to watch. I felt I was sitting there too. Good instructor who I think would make any student feel more relaxed. Good flying all round and one of the best instructional videos I've seen.
This instructor is so good I wish I had him teach me s I am gong through my PPL currently.
the white people are clever and awesome and the flight was bombastic
Very useful thank you
Excellent, very through instructor! Keep up the good work. l
Looking forward to more hours of instruction.
Excellent instructor!
Amazing..... thxxxxx a lot . It’s so helpful , got wealth of info
I recently did my trial lesson at Cranfield it was amazing I can’t wait to start my lessons hopefully in a few years or so
Excellent vids. Doing my ATPL now. Good memories of my ppl 😀
My first time in a cockpit is 3 hours away.
I'm so excited!
I didn't get to take off :(
Still awesome tho.
Damn those rudders are sharp.
Seems like a great instructor
#1 recommended video for me. Let me give you some advice. Keep it up :)
soo excited
Simon
Looking back at what appears to have been your first flying lesson do you think that your instructor taught you in the manner that is laid out in your text book or did you feel overwhelmed by all the information you were presented with?
THE HARRY BROWN PROJECT
Congrats on your first "proper" lesson ;-) Keep filming your flights as this will provide a great way to debrief and review afterwards.
Brilliant instructor. Where is the airport?
Where did you learn? Your instructor seems really good!
6:46 He says they're in Turweston
Awesome
this just popped up on my feed. Great to see Turdy that long ago!! are you still flying there Simon?
Not as much as I’d like! Hoping to plan a few flights over the next couple of months.
@@simoncort22 I am doing some training on IR/R now to push myself a bit more. There tomorrow and Thursday!! may see you there one day!!
@@adampool4625 I’d love to do that. Definitely one day, as you say, just to keep pushing the skills. I’ve moved to near rugby so not as local as I once was but will still be making the journey to continue at Turdy.
How much did it cost for the course and how many lessons did you take? I am in the same position as you were. I've been wanting to fly for years but due to family and work couldn't. Now 43 yrs, game on! Buying stuff of ebay in readiness and going for my first trial flight in two weeks. Watching UA-cam videos and reading up the flying training book and Air law etc..
Hey great video. I'm just gathering all my equipment as you did. Do you have a link for the go pro wire adapter to listen to the radio? I've looked on trans air but I can't find it. Thank you. Great work
Nice video man!! So, we're 6yrs on from now.... you a CPL at this point??
Haha no, PPL was only ever a hobby and leisure activity for me. It took me 3 years and 45.1 hours to get my licence eventually in 2019. I renewed my SEP last year for another 2 years. Got a few trips planned this year. I’m never saying never, I may go commercial later in life, but with a young family now it’s not the best life decision.
What a brilliant instructor.
How did you keep your GoPro powered as I use a power pack in conjunction but it freezes my GoPro. Also what model is yours?
Pricey's channel hi, thanks for the message. It’s a Hero 4 and I’ve always just used the standard batteries which have lasted long enough for all my training flights. Hope that helps.
All the best ! I'm planning to start my PPL later this year, any advice?
Paavan Chohan thanks for the comment. My advice is to study the ground school stuff in parallel with your practical lessons. I'm currently in a position where I need to pass my navigation before I do my solo cross country.
If you like reading, search online for a blog called forty five hours. I read through that 3-4 times in the lead up to starting my PPL. Very well written and it gave me some idea as to what to expect as I progressed.
Also join some of the UK aviation Facebook groups. Handy if you get stuck with anything.
Hope that helps. I've had a bit of a break while finishing my degree but will be back at it shortly... all the best with yours!
Nice video and landing. I am looking to start my ppl in January when i have some money, what exactly do i need. By this i mean logbook, headset etc.
Sw16 Ws first definitely get your log book and once you’ve got your first couple of lessons done try and get your class 2 medical incase there is a underlying issue which will stop you in your tracks but once you have that as well you can go and get all the books you need ( I’d recommend the pooleys fixed wing starter pack) and a headset if you wish. Hope this helps!
Hello Simon, don’t think I’ve seen such an in depth video.. would love to have a quick chat with you regarding your PPL.. how do I contact you directly
Sorry just seen this, not sure if still relevant but you can find me on Facebook if needed - Simon Cort.
Where do you pay for landing fees?
Hi Simon I hope all the best
May I ask you what camera did u use and how did you get the voice recorded from the radio ?
Many thanks 🙏
Really sorry for the delay, only just seen this comment. This was filmed using a GoPro Hero 4 & Audio adapter purchased from Transair. Hope that helps.
Simon Cort thank you very much for your reply that definitely will help 👍
u need an audio cable with resistors inb it bro. check my latest vids ;) l,et me know if u need info
What location?
soo excited
