Lol, there is a reason Ace did a bunch of covers albums. His biggest hit was a cover. He is Kiss through and through. Paul was just as focused on music as he is the show
@soysaucefool Ace has more rock cred than Paul ever will. Ace also wrote Cold Gin, with is still on the set list. Paul and Gene were always about what would sell. Ace just wrote good music
Great assessment of the song and production! I shot the music video for this single, definitely a personal milestone and was super fun working with Ace and the band members. Bass player was the nicest guy too lol. Great playing on your end btw! 🤘
After Ace left, they were never the same. I love his solo on Love Gun and Shock Me. He might not have the greatest voice, but his lead work is superb...
Ace and Peter completed the Ultimate KISS - The Black and Silver KISS 74-78. Rock and Roll Over is their best studio and KISS ALIVE! is their best "live" album. Fact.
10,000 Volts surprised me. I felt directly „at home“ when I listened to it for the first time. Sadly, KISS stopped making music many years ago whereas Ace continued being creative. I think Bruno Ravel of The Defiants was responsible for the mix and mastering. IMO Ace sounds modern but still maintains the classic rock vibe. To me, Bruno did a great job bringing Ace‘s signature sound to a modern-day-like sound level.
Ace says it "FRAY-lee". He and Hendrix are probably my two favorite guitarists. The solos on Strange Ways and Parasite off of Hotter Than Hell are still outstanding.
As "greasy" as Ace is, he does use effects VERY well. His solo stuff is packed with it and it adds to his brilliance....love the man and he always shows why KISS was stupid to not do more work with him. Their loss, our gain 👍
This videos gave me nice flashbacks to me as a kid listening to Shock Me for the first time. Ace has that magical “something” that is so unique to him and makes all of his songs feel connected, as if they were part of the same *solar* system. I can’t wait for the rest of the album, specially Walking and Back Into My Arms Again.
I don't listen a lot to Ace's music, but this song got recommended to me yesterday and I think sounds pretty cool. Totally agree with you on the drum sound, but then I'm not a fan of modern sounding productions in any context. When you talked about the video and said "economical way to do a video these days", I immediately thought of the November Rain video, and five seconds later... there it is. 😆
This is awesome. So funny, I nearly sent you a message about this new Ace song haha. I can definitely hear those techniques in there. I spent about 2 straight months listening to KISS Alive when I was still driving to work so they're in my brain now. I do love the sound of the unison bend, glad he put it in there.
I'm SO glad that Ace is going back to faster, more complex songs. On the last few albums he seemed to rely on less speed and simpler drums. I guess it's easier when you have a very solid backing band. I expected him to be slowing diwn, maybe releasing an electric blues album... Maybe that's because I see him getting older. I'm glad I was wrong. Thanks for this review. It was insightful :)
Once I heard Ace's "New York Groove," I was completely enthralled by the modern glam sound, like Marc Bolan and T-Rex banging that gong and getting it on. I'm not sure about the new stuff, but I'm so old it doesn't even matter anymore. Thanks for sharing, Mike!
Ace always had some kickass songs. Meanwhile, Paul and Gene's post 1990 songs were just OK. I remember Paul and Ace doing some music together and it was pretty good. Ace was the rock and roll soul of KISS.
Red Fang puts out the best produced videos these days. Always humorous, well thought out, and they always tell a little story which usually has nothing to do with the song itself. Nekrogoblikon is another band that makes funny (in a gory way) videos. Both bands worth checking out if you just wanna see old-school style music videos.
KISS’s last show is this Saturday, December 2nd in NYC. I’ll be there! There’s been a lot of articles written saying how Peter, Ace, or Bruce won’t be there. I feel like it’s all just a ploy so that it’s a bigger surprise when they show up for the final two shows. Ace’s new song is bad ass, thanks for breaking it down!
Great video! This song keeps going in my brain! It is simple like the video & and lyrics, but i think it is a homerun! Produced by Steve Brown from Trixter fame!
Thanks for the video, I watched Aces video to this and your knowledge has helped me understand stuff. Love his little steal from 100,000 years in the solo 😉
I'm afraid that a "huge reunion" is not possible. Paul slammed the door on that when he refused to apologize to Ace for what he said on Stern. It's okay, though. Ace has at least ten more years of creativity left and he's doing what he wants, so he's happy and it really shows.
Yes! Thanks for analyzing out that while step down issue, it was weird trying to figure it out with an inner ear disease. Listen to Got to Choose & see if there’s a similarity there. Thats what I heard when listening to it.
I like that it has the trite everything we'd expect from that era. Rhyme face with space and claim it hits you with the shock of walking on carpet and touching a doorknob. Yeah I miss the late 70's, early 80's. The depth is magical.
5:00 Seen Ace play live a few times in the past few years and that is definitely his guitar player 😂 That guy is Ryan Cook and he plays bass/rhythm guitar interchangeably for Ace and Gene's solo bands just not sure what where off the top of my head. I call him hippie Gene Simmons, love how he plays!
I think it sounds awesome! The drums are killer! The production is tight. Lots of people talk about having things sound analog and organic with the slop still in there, but I like music that sounds clear, articulate and punchy. Which 10,000 Volts does.
@The-Art-of-Guitar 2:49 The ending "tail" here instantly made me think "Hard Times" off Dynasty - and Dynasty isn't one of my favorite Kiss albums. I really feel a Hard Times vibe. Check it out and let me know what you think because I don't know shit about music theory or guitar and sometimes I don't have the best ear either when it comes to little nuances in songs.
Say what you want it's just my opinion at the end of the day but I think the new song is a 9/10. I think if he used this way back in the day when rock was big then it probably would of charted decently high. It feels like a decent old school rock song
It's a good song. Classic and honest. And really has a classic Ace feel. Lots of Ace's classic licks on the solos: Deuce, let me go rock n roll and 100000 years come to mind.
Ace, and KISS, are what made me want to play guitar in the first place. That Ace has the sense to sound at least a little modern shows he understands that he can't stay the same from 1976. The last 2 KISS albums sounded like they were trying to be KISS from the Rock and Roll Over/Destroyer/Love Gun days and sucking at it, One of the riffs sounds a bit like a riff from Slash's Snakepit's "Ain't Life Grand" album, but that's fair because if not for Ace there's probably no Slash, since Steven Adler took Slash to his house and played the Kiss "Destroyer" album and told Slash they were going to start a band. Check out "Shred with Shifty" (Premier Guitar) with Craig Schiflet of Foo Fighters interviewing Mike McCready of Pearl Jam. The 1st 10 or 15 minutes are an Ace lovefest!
Excellent video. Now I'm going to have to go back and rewatch your Ace technique video. I've been a KISS fan since I was a little kid in the 70's and Ace is the reason I picked up a guitar. I'm also glad he keeps releasing music. I just enjoy his cheesy AF "Ace" songs and solos. "What Every Girl Wants" is one of my greasy faves from his later stuff. Looking forward to the new album too.
I agree with the greasy - slick observation When I gigged I noticed folk like slick for a short time but then disengaged. When I'd drink too much or get high and play sloppier, folk loved it. It kinda kills ya when you nail a song and folk are like - meh...
Ace-isms .. As a huge Kiss fan since about 1979 or so when the neighbourhood bad kid first showed and played me Destroyer I think you've coined the perfect word ..
Man I actually really Dig this song. Its got a sweet Groove. Totally Ace!! The more interviews I see of Kiss members the more I realize how down to earth Ace is compared to the other guys. Nice video! I'm going to look up your Ace licks video and learn some classic rock staples.
Ace has really enjoyed a renaissance the last few years. I was iffy on Frehley's Comet back in the mid 80s but have really liked his last 10-ish years output. When I was a kid I saw KISS but Ace and Peter had just recently left and I got stuck with Vinnie Vincent. I finally got to see Ace at the Belly Up in Encinitas, CA in 2018- HOLY CRAP, that was a fun show!!! Yeah, he's my favorite Kiss member.
It would be an Awesome thing if they played the Final show with Ace & peter. they both said NO and Ace said "if they would pay him enough" and "write me a check" The same guy that said about Paul & Gene "Money is their God"
Great video! I love those Ace solo licks. I was thinking he played it in standard tuning like Detroit Rock City. Especially how that A chord rings out during the bridge.
Mike - Please take a look at the song Walk On - Jimmy Barnes( I think Neil Schon on guitar) and One Step from Paradise from Danger Danger ( not sure if Tony Rey or Andy Timmons played on this song) and you will be shocked at particular part. Play the Jimmy Barnes song first and then the Danger Danger song. Its actually pretty cool and a little bizarre.
I agree on the production , something I have a problem with in general. It's tricky because if any modern recording doesn't match what everybody else is doing it can seem lacking so you have to keep up. If there is one thing great about being a very unpopular musician such as my self , is I have no pressure to keep up with trends ! BTW I call that a "Hot Fade" and it's super fun and sometimes the only way to end a song thats so good you can't get out of it . Best example is "Suspicious Minds" from Elvis . You play that song live and you're going to be locked in for at LEAST 45 minutes because there is no way out .
The lead break really does sound like he took all of his signature licks and just played through them in sequence. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.
i hope you see this brother, i really had no clue you were this big of a ace fan, my very 1st kiss related album was his 78 solo, i got it in 78 when i was five yrs old... so he is the very reason i ever started playing.. my question to you is, could or would you post a how to on his version of humble pies 30 days in the hole? its just some things ace does in it that im missing... i hope you see this and give it a consider ..
People told you right on his name, listen to the first Frehleys Comet record, in the song Rock Soldiers he says his name (as the devil talking to him if you aren’t familiar with the tune). Also - Ace-ism had me cracking up.
Good God!! That ebony Custom is absolutely stunning! You know you’re getting old when a guitar turns you on more than most women. Of course…it IS a Les Paul after alll. ⚡️👑🕺🏼
It’s like the majority of Ace’s releases of the last 15 years. Not necessarily bad, but not great either. Fairly generic. Love the guy and will buy it to support him, as I’ve always done, but again like the other releases, I’ll listen to it 4-5 times, and that will be enough. Just happy he’s still up and about at 70, tho what I’ve seen lately, I wouldn’t bother going to see him play live now. In theory it’s nice, but the original 4 playing together now would sound horrendous. It was a cluster last time, let alone putting another 23 years on them. And that’s the end of my dribble 😂 0:01
I just want to say thank you for making this video I did wanted to know how you thought about this song 10,000 volts and I sense you were Ace Frehley fan that's why I started following you and I was correct when I found out that you were. Lol. Keep up with the great videos Curly 😉
I whole heartedly agree with the overproduced “slick” production remark. Some of the modern rock stuff such as Mick Mars’ new solo stuff is very similar in that it’s way too overproduced and robotic on the mixing, to the point where it barely sounds like the greasy 80s Mick Mars tone I love. I wish rock would take a few steps back and not try to make things so pitch perfect and “slick” lol.
I don't have the ear to make a technical analysis like you do. But I did go and listen to it couple times. I really enjoyed it. It doesn't suck. I have a friend who is a professional sound man and has a hard time listening to music for enjoyment because his ear is so in tune to what's going on. Do you ever run into that?
Keep on getting more and more involved with your music ACE...I always loved you it was you and Peter Criss...can you please play with Peter on a heavy type song together for old time sake thanks space out...
really enjoyed your thoughts on the vid and on ace's playing seen him many times in club/bars, and areas, was hoping for like you said the classic ace toggle switch sound but i agree a good tune, would I love to hear him do something like a dr love song sure or something totally new and heavy with chugging riffs like the riffs in manditory suicide, I think he could if he tried to even do a dimebag take on the riffs on the song walk, which would be so cool to hear him do just to really blow peoples minds. no it wouldnt have to be as fast as the speed metal bands do, just the riff feel and slow chugg would be different to hear him play it.
First off...nothing on Psycho Circus should blow you away. Steve Brown helped write and record/produced this album. Steve was always solid with Tokyo Motorfist and Trixter. So ace has an ace in his production deck.
I just love this track. It's classic Ace. I get what you're saying about it being slick but it's good and it's very catchy. I see the comparison. Love Soundgarden too. He is borrowing which many do. There are really a finite amount of riffs. Eventually people will hear similarities with someone else. Good catch. I really love both the Soundgarden track and this one. Straight up rock and roll. Feels are there.
Ace has always had commercial production on his solo records after 1978, I mean in the 80s he went hair metal (unfortunately), maybe trouble walking was different but especially anomaly on he’s had a very modern production sound
Ace was always my favorite KISS member. Seemed like his musical talent extended beyond the “Hey, this will sell records!” mindset.
Lol, there is a reason Ace did a bunch of covers albums. His biggest hit was a cover. He is Kiss through and through. Paul was just as focused on music as he is the show
@@soysaucefool Paul? McCartney?? I only know two members of KISS. Ace and Gene.
@soysaucefool-Ace actually has musical talent. He just never worked hard at it. Paul has very little talent, but he was willing to try to get better.
@soysaucefool Ace has more rock cred than Paul ever will. Ace also wrote Cold Gin, with is still on the set list. Paul and Gene were always about what would sell. Ace just wrote good music
@TylerJohnstonGuitar, Ace's entire career is a case study in not selling records.
Great assessment of the song and production! I shot the music video for this single, definitely a personal milestone and was super fun working with Ace and the band members. Bass player was the nicest guy too lol. Great playing on your end btw! 🤘

Great Video Mike. I love the new Ace song. I really love the fact that they got Anton Fig to play drums on it.
Anton has been Aces drummer for decades. At least mostly
I love Anton...he and Ace have always had awesome chemistry!!
The chorus lyrics is ace referring back to his song “shock me” and also his persona as the spaceman. Fantastic :)
As "greasy" as Ace is, he does use effects VERY well. His solo stuff is packed with it and it adds to his brilliance....love the man and he always shows why KISS was stupid to not do more work with him. Their loss, our gain 👍
Paul & Gene never wanted Ace or Peter to upstage them on record.. When Ace had a song for a KISS album iit was a gem.
Nice breakdown Mike! Catchy tune and killer production! Sound quality is top notch. Rip It Out is the best Ace song ever!
And great call on the My Wave riff - though the tuning for that song is really odd
Rip It Out and Speedin' Back To My Baby are my absolute favourite Ace songs!
Such a fun song, certainly gets you moving.
Love the opening!
I saw kiss twice for their 1996 reunion tour. His solo’s we’re epic in those shows

I can’t wait for the rest of the album, specially Walking and Back Into My Arms Again.
Thanks for the mention Mike.
P.S it was me who messaged you.
I hope Ace keeps on making music since he's one of a few artists I can listen to and learn to play fairly easily. It's like comfort food to me.🤗😎😉
Personally I thought Ace Nailed it with 10000 Volts... Always loved Aces playing...

That main lick is also very close to "Firehouse" in the chorus. "Get the firehouse!"

The bass player is Chris Wyse. He is great and was in The Cult and was in Ozzy's band. He was in Hollwood Vampires with Johnny Depp and Joe Perry.
That doesn’t look like Chris Wyse….
Bassist is Ryan Cook.
The guy in the video that you said looks like an actor that was placed in the video is actually in his solo band.. He sings Detroit rock city live.

Cool video. And its a pretty good song from Ace this far into his career.
People told you right on his name, listen to the first Frehleys Comet record, in the song Rock Soldiers he says his name (as the devil talking to him if you aren’t familiar with the tune). Also - Ace-ism had me cracking up.
You had me at "toggle switch trick" 😂 nice video.... Ace is the Place 🤘🤘🤘
Its a cool tune with an old school vibe. I dug it!
Enjoyed your video, the new Sebastian Bach video is a throwback to old videos.
Good God!! That ebony Custom is absolutely stunning! You know you’re getting old when a guitar turns you on more than most women. Of course…it IS a Les Paul after alll. ⚡️👑🕺🏼
yeah, relax
Hey guys, I believe it's the mxr blue box he is using on that first Little lead.
Excellent video, Mike.
Yes this was cheesy like hell, especially when he sings 10k volts. Listened ones, that was enough.
I just want to say thank you for making this video I did wanted to know how you thought about this song 10,000 volts and I sense you were Ace Frehley fan that's why I started following you and I was correct when I found out that you were. Lol. Keep up with the great videos Curly 😉
Ace is big on the blues Pentatonic scale for his solos. The production is great on the album. Good job Steve Brown and Ace. Bravo. 👏
That's because it doesn't take any talent or skill to play it.
I love the new Ace song.
it is the best rock song i have heard in decades. so so good.
First off...nothing on Psycho Circus should blow you away. Steve Brown helped write and record/produced this album. Steve was always solid with Tokyo Motorfist and Trixter. So ace has an ace in his production deck.
🤣 I liked a few of the tracks.
Yeah Ace didn't even play on Psycho Circus if I remember correctly, it was studio musicians.
Ace is great !
Official final tour? Kiss???? Lol! I saw their SECOND farewell tour in 2001. What number will this be? The 6th?
Yeah I went to one of their farewell concerts 20 years ago 😂
Ace has always had commercial production on his solo records after 1978, I mean in the 80s he went hair metal (unfortunately), maybe trouble walking was different but especially anomaly on he’s had a very modern production sound
