Too many of our heroes have feet of clay. I feel the same way. Thank goodness, as Carolyn888 stated, Terry Pratchett was a co-writer for Good Omens. I did not know that Gaiman was raised in a sick Scientology household, so it is no surprise that Mr. Gaiman turned out to be a very disturbed and horrible person. It is so good that the victims have united and have finally come out about his and his wife's torture and abuse. May these poor women find a way to heal. I feel absolutely sick and so disappointed, too.
That's the problem right there. People who, for a living, because you must not forget, these people do what they do for money;like us all, are not heroes. They type words out in the comfort of their homes or coffee shop and someone else publishes them. That's it. If what you read touches you, remember its the sentiment you take from it and no the moral lifestyle the writer forges that moved you. The only disappointment for me is I really liked season one of The Sandman. Don't suppose we'll see the 2nd.
Thanks for sharing this post. My wife is just like you. She's (was) a MASSIVE fan of Neil Gaimen. We have all of his works. I was going to read the Graveyard book this year. Ugh. You are seen, and we are grieving with you, and share your pain (and obviously with those women who suffered by this man). Yeah. It's so sad. Again, thank you for posting this (even though it was hard).
My mother likes Neil Gaiman too but being that she’s read everything, including Norman Mailer, Philip Roth and other literary pigs, she knows that artists aren’t the nicest people in the world. The devil never comes as the devil, he always has a disguise.
I really think this is a good example of why writers carry a responsibility to not destroy the worlds they created by their own bad actions. They not only destroy their careers, but their characters and the worlds they inhabit. I’m a male novel writer. I love Neil Gaiman’s work. The pain for these fictional worlds and characters is real for many fans. It’s very much a cautionary tale. Writers have to do better and live in a way that doesn’t break the hearts of their fans…
Don't hold out for a statement from David Tennant. It's not his fault, but libel laws will prevent him from speaking out, at least for a while. I met him back when I was in college and he was in his late 20s, and aside from the fact that he was obviously a little annoyed at being asked by his parents (with whom we were staying) to escort a bunch of teenaged girls around, he was a lovely person. I have NO DOUBT he is devastated by this as well if he didn't already suspect it from knowing Gaiman.
Its really hard to process the grief, trauma, and betrayal in this situation. Take it slow, one day at a time. When you have positively invested on story and character, its like being ripped apart. Speaking as a victim of SA, it is a heavy burden, a huge mountain to climb, it does leave a very deep scar and journey out and through is very difficult, it is possible to find a way out abd through and for women like yourself it is the talking about, the expressing your honest feelings and not leaving these things unspken and banished in the dark that makes the difference. It is the silence and the silent suffering for days, weeks and years that makes things a million times worse...and for victims to hear their innocence really makes a difference. SA is a power trip, always happens in a situation of power imbalance and they always leave you feeling like its your fault... bring these things out into the light and let us hear that it is genuinely not out fault amd that helps us to heal. You also have a journey of healing now as you are clearly traumatised, so be gentle with yourself too. Xxx
I think the term for what you're feeling for the pain you feel when someone you deeply love, respect, and admire, terribly hurts you, or someone else, is *cognitive dissonance.

His work seemed to have a little too much reference to sexual violence. I only made it through a couple of novels and story collects in spite of the excellent writing. It seems clear now that any male creator yelling about how feminist and progressive he is likely to covering really bad behavior.
Funny thing. I have started reading Sandman back in January, 2024. There was whole series in library and it was an edition from 2002 so it wasn't graphically ruined with "modern" recolouring. So, I was overjoyed to get to read that classic. But as I was reading through Preludes and Nocturned I was just bored and disgusted and I was just wondering why I'm reading that nihilistic anti-human drivel. Then I have started Doll's House in hope it will improve but I have read the story of Morpheus pursuing a woman and then sending her to hell for rejecting him and I have dnfed it. Like what was the point of this whole series? It's clear that Morpheus is idealized self-insert of Gaiman and the whole series is basically a weird power fantasy. Additionally the whole thing with humanizing characters and then destroying them horribly. It all felt like some evil power game. Like this series legit made me feel like the author is actually evil. And I read a lot of really dark fiction so it's not just me clutching pearls.
Obviously a lot of fans of Gaiman and Rowling are very hurt over their terrible behavior, it hurts when people you looked up to let you down or are exposed as being terrible people, I’ve been let down by this many times myself.
First please understand that I do feel Neil is a perve and I would never deal with him. Keep this in mind but follow me on the rest. So what he did something you didn't like, it isn't illegal and he isn't in jail, so why be dramatic and take things you love from yourself? herapy, girlfriend. Here's the hard hitting truth and I am saying this to ou as a favor, seriously. Lots of Muggles you read works by do things that would horrify you, you just don't know about it. So if something beautiful that touches you and opens you came out of a person of whom you disapprove, take the gold nuggets they dropped nd keep those. I don't understand the people who literally suffer over losing things that ou take from yourself. Now let's talk about the wmen. It's fascinating that you couldnt even read the entire article yet you have made up your mind, and taking something from yourself. Just because ssomething bad happened to you doesn't mean these women had the same situation so all this relating is unnecessary. People who experienced SA don't write gushing love letters to him after the fact and take money, watch the master pod cast. It isn't even formed in his favor but it shows how the women encouraged him and fawned over him. This is not girl power. He did not hold a gun to their heads, sorry. He did not, they chose it because they wanted the perks of being with him, so no, that is not SA. SA is when you have no choice and I have many people in my life who I love deeply who had no choice and this, what the girls did with Neil, was not that. Do I believe they decied later that they didn't like it because it brought old unhealed trauma, yes? But that's not on him. + he believedd they liked it because they did not remove themselves and they literally said they liked it and girls, we can't keep blaming meen for that, we need to deal with ourselves on that and change this. Sorry but it is true. Bella L
Just a reminder Good Omen's was also the product of Terry Prachett, if that's any consolation.
And TP said he did 2/3 of the writing.
Pratchett rules so hard. I love Diskworld so much and would love seeing every book as a show!

You're not wrong to be devastated.
I'm having a really hard time with this too, and I think it's okay to actually cry about this.
That’s so awful. One of my best memories was my dad reading stardust it’ll never feel the same again. I get it

He's betrayed his entire fan base, and is now dead to me.

He's ok with speaking out against JK Rowling though isn't he. HYPOCRITE.😂

I am no poet, but my words for this grief is this Sucks. Crying and yelling at the wall. I am also a long Time fan of Amanda Palmer and I feel ick.
I can't even burn his books due to my general love for books but I can't bear to read anything by him either.
I feel bad for you. Try to remember that Good Omens was more Prattchett than Gaiman.

Don't feel bad. A lot of art that you love was probably made by a monster. You just don't know it yet.
"Death of the Author" term existe, I believe.

Rowling would defend women while Gaiman sodomizes them then talks about how he is a champion for Women's Rights.
Rowling did nothing wrong, and do you know for a fact that gaiman did anything, you people are too quick to jump to conclusions without proof

Why didn't these women come out during MeToo? Did the money run out now?
