  • All fishermen need to try different baits and in this episode Graeme Pullen shows you the top big carp bait that was all the rage before boilies were even invented! Following the huge success he had with Carp on Peas he shows you how to prepare, hook and catch fish using a Potato!! He was fishing at Bury Hill Fisheries in Surrey.

So glad I stumbled on this channel. I really love the enthusiasm and the fact that there is no annoying intrusive music AND a very likeable personality.
Great knowledge of Carp and Salmon and Trout. And proper old school! Im 45 yrs old and my dad gave me those observer angling books when I was a lad and I used to read them cover to cover over and over again. Great stuff. Keep up the good work mate!

I used this system in Australia here and it works. We soaked our potatoes in honey overnight and this method of rigging with the honey potato works better than anything I have tried.

In my ancient Fishing with Mr Crabtree in All Waters book he talks about fishing with par boiled potatoes too, one of my favourite books ever.

When I first took up fishing back in 1980, my Dad’s cousin gave me a book...”Fishing in all waters with Mr Crabtree” I read that book from cover to cover many times, and I remember this being the chosen method for catching carp. If only Graeme had used a centre pin reel and laid out reverse coils of line on paper to allow the carp to run with the bait before striking!! Thank you TA Fishing for another highly entertaining video.

My dad bought a book or my 6th birthday in 1952 by Bernard Venables called ``Mr. Crabtree Goes Fishing`` in which small par boiled potatoes were used on a treble hook to catch carp so there`s little new under the sun. In addition when in the very early 1960`s when I was making my own fishing rods which I still have I used a thin elastic thread which my mum bought for me to secure soft dead baits for pike to my ``snap tackle`` just like Graeme uses to secure his sea fishing baits. I now live in South Dorset and hope to return to all sorts of fishing when I`ve finished building my new bungalow.

We would also put a piece of drinking straw on the line above the hook. Pushed back inside it would prevent the line cutting the potatoe. Love your show!

Excellent, I can remember using a "melon baller" to prepare small - medium sized baits 40 years ago using potatoes but also cutting from large carrots and parsnips!!

I think a lot of anglers especially the newer anglers believe that if you want to catch the biggest or the most carp in a lake you need all the gear & top priced special baits & rigs etc & don’t realize that you can use the most simple baits and use quite basic equipment. Good job to show us and everyone it sure does work 👍

Absolutely Graham, spuds rule., Been using them after reading Mr Crabtree over 50 years ago. nowdays I experiment with parboiling them with various spices, herbs, additives and fruits additives. Also picked up from Mr Crabtree the benefits of baby green tomatoes. Shop bought cherry toms work too. Old school forever.

Little tip: When we fish with potatoes we aways put a piece of straw about the size of the potatoe lengthwise on the line. First slide the piece of straw on the line. Then the potatoe (as shown in this clip). Next attache the hook to the line and put a piece of bread on the line (as shown in this clip). Then push the straw in to the potatoe en push the hook in to the potatoe. The straw prevents the line of cutting in to the potatoe while casting. With this addition you can cast much farther then without the straw! Try it, you'll be amazed!!!

amazing video bro :) im a 30+ year veteran of the sport buddy i have one tip for you though.. to have more control over the fish i keep my rod tip low to the waters surface. Enables me to guide the fish to the net bro (especially on a feeder buddy creates pressure and an upwards tension which frightens the fish even more , making it fight harder whilst having the tip in the air also making fish harder to control)... long time fine bro :) if you are ever near the wirral shout me and ill show you the north west waters and my well stocked little syndicate.. tight lines guys :)

They use Feta cheese and bread in Greece around the sea shore. Works very well. the cheese and bread merge after kneeding and create a bait looking like a boily. stays on the hook too.

    • @davidharvey5672

+Sam P just kneed it till the feta is mixed and roll it into boily size balls. You can also pinch bits off and squash it onto the hook. I don't know if it works in fresh water. I'm new to freshwater fishing but like to try things.

Just got round to watching this and remember using potatoes, but we only half peeled them to stop the hook pulling through. I have a book which was published in 1937 where it says the best baits for carp are par boiled potatoes or par boiled macaroni (or al dente as the modern peeps would call it). I might give macaroni a go, easy to hook and cheaper than spuds.
