Velux Blinds - How to remove & Velux Product Recall - Velux Windows Can Spontaneously Shatter!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 жов 2024
- The information below is correct at time of writing - July 2021.
There is a problem with some of the older Velux skylights, which causes the inner sheet of glass in the glazing unit to spontaneously shatter. Velux will replace any affected glazing for free, even if the windows are outside of the 10 year warranty period.
I had five such windows which needed to be replaced, and this required that I remove the blackout blinds which were fitted to the windows prior to the work being done.
I looked on UA-cam for a video showing how exactly to remive the blinds, and I couldn't find one. The official Velux one doesn't provide much detail, it simply states that you should 'unclip' them. It is, I believe, also related to the more modern, current design of blackout blinds being supplied for the newer window frames.
It should therefore be noted that my video applies to an older window blind. The ones I show were fitted in around 2002.
If you believe you may have some affected windows which are subject to this same product recall, you can find more information by following the link below.

I really hope that this video proves useful to someone.
If you found my video helpful, please give it a like, and if you have any interest in old Land Rovers or vehicle restoration, then you may enjoy some of my other videos - the main subject of my channel is the restoration of Shorty, a 1965 Series IIA Land Rover.
Many thanks for watching.
So clear - Velux should be ashamed of themselves for their terrible video. This is so much clearer!
Thank you! This is the only video I could find that explains how to do the hard part -- getting the blind "cassette" unit out. A model of clarity.
Perfect, the velux video showing the back view of a man is unbelievably unhelpful, yours actually meant we could remove the blind with confidence!
"Release the left side first" was exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!
Brilliant......thank you! Have just spent ages trying to work the difficult bit removing the blind and not wanting to risk too much brute force! Thank you very much
At last someone with a good explanation. After struggling a long time you have helped me out in 5 minutes. Thx a lot from Belgium
Agree with all the above comments criticising Velux's uninformative video. Equal criticism should go to the other companies who simply provide a link to the Velux video. This is the only useful video I have found. Thanks.
Thank you so much! About to repair 4 windows, clean, sand, wood restorer then varnish. Thought I’d have to get help (divorced with three kids) then found your video. 4 cartridges removed in 10 minutes! Brilliant video! Easy when you know how!
I watched this to help me remove my blinds but thanks to the video I learnt about the recall. My 4 large Velux windows were all affected. I contacted Velux and 2-3 weeks later an engineer came and fitted them all one morning. No cost, no mess. Thank you so much for making this video!
This was the only video that explained the removing process in detail. We could use this to remove our blinds from the windows. Cheers mate!
Thanks for video - really helpful for replacing blind and also re the safety recall - I’ve had a pane shatter and didn’t realise re the recall - am now getting all replaced by Velux! Thanks
This was so helpful - very much appreciated. See what you mean about the amount of force required. I would not have had the courage to bend it out without your help. Many thanks
Thank you so much for this, it really helped me understand how much pressure had to be applied and made me feel confident to do so (after faffing around for 20 minutes before I found you!)
Thank you so much for your video. I couldn't find the instructions on how to remove the top part until I finally found yours. Very good.
Thank you! This is the only video - but everyone else already said the same. It took me quite a lot of force, which I never ever would l have had exerted without your encouragement and the knowledge to do it on the right side only. Did I say "thank you"? THANK YOU!
I have a slightly different fitting for DPU SK06 type window with blackout blind and this your technique works. Veluxs own video is very poor. Yours is really helpful. Thanks
Great! The only video that explains the trick to dissasembly velux blind! Many thanks!
Amazing - saves lots of time. Only Visio I found that describes this process
Cheers mate, perfect info, those velux vids are a joke.
Your a star for this
You are totally right- it seemed so easy on their velux video- I am so glad I found your video! Thank you!
Thanks - that was the info I needed for the crucial cassette manoeuvre.
Really appreciate you taking the time to make and share. Worked perfectly.
Great and extremely useful video. I’ve struggling for half an hour trying to figure out how to remove the fucking blind and you finally made it clear
Excellent video covering the exact problem we experienced. Many thanks for taking the time to make it
Thank you very much, sir! As you say, the Velux video(s) shows a bloke just breezing up to the unit, fiddling around at both ends, and it sort of pops off almost immediately. Which certainly isn't very helpful. But your video is spot on...now we have to see whether we can manage it (needs strong fingers). Thanks!
Ok, have just managed it, with thanks again Rusty. The whole unit suddenly came out and whizzed across the room! Noticed that one of the little plastic knob thingies the unit slotted over at each side was different: while the one on the right was the same as yours so was the one on the left, ie no groove, unlike yours. Anyway, managed to get the new unit in just like in the Velux video, ie piece of cake (part 2, NOT the removal part). Exciting stuff!
Thanks! Really helped as opposed to the useless Velux video! I found I could slip a knife in beside the casette and it then popped off easily.
Just saved my sanity !! I kept searching for some screws or so to get rid off the cassette, thinking "even if it's broken I can't just rip it off?", well apparently that's exactly what I was supposed to do, took me a lot of strength but finally got it off thank you so much 🙌
It takes me 1hr how to remove the cassette, until I saw this video… very useful.. 2 thumps up!
At last an intelligent video explaining how to take that cassette off. Well done for showing how to do it. Why on earth do Velux not do the sane.. thank you so much for the video
Thank you so much for posting this video. You, sir, are an absolute star! That is the very kind of Velux blind I needed this information on. Great instruction and, as you have discovered, this is now the sole UA-cam video relating to uninstalling this blind. I found one on how to fit it but, considering it ‘clicks’ into place, I was concerned that when trying to remove it, I would break one of the fittings. What is also so very helpful is the information you’ve provided on the Velux recall. Brilliant. Many thanks again and best wishes from the Giant’s Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland. 😀👍☘️
Fantastically clear, so much better than Velux video! Many thanks!
Thanks very much for that. The official Velux video does not explain how to get the cassette out at all and we were scratching our heads for a long time. Once we had seen your video and had seen that we had to get the right hand side out first and that it required a bit of force, we had the confidence to do it. Cheers.
Wooow man I looked SO LOONG for a video showing how to get this damn thing out. Never would have figured it out without this video, thank you so much. Former tenant just left the blinder in the apartment and the people checking the apartment apparently just let her get away with it. Anyway it was soooo dirty and I've been trying for so long to replace it, now I finally got it off. Only thing left are the plastic things on the sides, not sure how to get these off
Thank you so much, I could have damaged the supports. I had to replace the blinds. No explanation for this scenario
A quick word of warning (to all watching this), not all Velux releases are the same. There are two types, the one shown here and another which I'd call a sort of 'horseshoe' shaped releases. These do not have a hole on either side, and just slide off towards you (probably like the man in the video you talk about). I'm not sure if and when Velux made those changes to the releases, but to make it difficult you cannot tell which is which from looking at them (with the blinds on them).
Nice video, thanks for your explanation/demonstration.
For the last part of the removal it also helped me alot to just open the window halfway down so you have a firmer grip on the cassette.
THANK YOU! Like so many others, I was completely unable to work out how to get the cassette/unit out. Brute force just didn't seem right, but it did the trick when applied on the right hand side, as you pointed out in your video. Thanks so much.
Top man! I spat feathers trying to do this on a previous uninstall. This time thanks to you it took me 10 minutes. Thankyou!
Amazing video. People like you make life easier for people like me and more. Thank you.
Fellow Lr owner here...great vid...turned out that my blind had different plastic mounting lugs from yours...straight pull, away from glass and no pulling down...I suspect my blind is older than yours
I have a window with no slot in the plastic mounting. I found from the replacement blind that there are non return tabs on the cassette. These can be reversed by pushing a thin blade in horizontally at the top of the tabs that the side rails slide into and then the blind comes away.
Thanks for actually clearly showing how to get the top part of the blind off… I also saw the velux guy do his demonstration and it wasn’t helpful at all 😂
Thank you so much. This is the only helpful video I could find that actually shows how to remove it.
The other videos I found were just rubbish.
Superb!!! Really appreciate your proper explanation! The Velux one was utter tosh!!!!
Made what seemed an impossible task very easy. Thank you very much for this excellent video without which I am sure I would have damaged the blinds trying to remove them.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your clear instructions. I could never have removed the cassette without them.
yes really helped , I had put mine up many years ago forgot how to take them off and was worried I would break it, so bad instructions from the vendor , I write technical documents and you should always look at it from a novice point of view.
Many thanks for this very helpful video, which proved to be a life saver after struggling with the official Velux video
I wish I had found this video earlier, been trying to do this for ages . Thanks
Thank SO MUCH!!! I'd been stuck for aaaaaaaaages. Really appreciate you taking the time. Blind all sorted now.
Thanks for this, instructions also worked for the DKL model. The minor difference I can see is the clips shown at 5:40 are easier on the DKL but the instructions are perfect.
You are a star. I have the same age (ish) window and had no idea how to get the 'cassette' out. Thanks so much.
Thanks for this, I also struggled to find a descent video but this is very clear
Thanks man. Would have struggled to remove without your help
Thanks for a clear video with the information you actually require to remove these blinds, the Velux information is just a waste of space. The info regarding recall is also beneficial and again not easy to find.
it was super clear!! I was fighting with my window for long
3+ years on and still helpful. I saw that Velux 'blind removal' video - a complete joke! Thanks for sharing; will be doing both the blind removal and recall check tomorrow. I owe you a beer so liked and subbed 👍
At last, someone who makes sense.
Thank you.
Great Video! Very Useful! You did a GREAT JOB explaining the procedure
Many thanks from France! Your video was very useful.
Well thanks for that, you gave me the confidence to use more force than I would have otherwise, unfortunately when it did release it bent the pin and now it cannot be refitted.
Excellent video. However, my Velux blind does not fit onto brackets with a hole in one bracket and a groove on the other bracket. It has two brackets without holes, which pull straight out to remove or insert the cassette, just like in the Velux video. Thus, it seems that newer Velux blinds improve on the old ones. They are now much simpler, but still require a lot of force to remove.
Nice one bro. Felt like that other video you mentioned was the equivalent of explaining what a word meant by using the same word to describe it😂😂
Thanks for the video. Sooo helpful. I found that getting a long handled thin screwdriver up the side helped to dislodge whatever bit holds it in place and it slide out smoothly.
Thank you so much, I just couldn’t work out how it came off until I found your video. 😃👍
I saw the same Velux video and had the same reaction.
This did the trick, thanks!
V helpful. But I’ve got a newer velux, and there’s no slot visible, which there is on yours.
The key to removing my cassette was to push it upwards, and then outwards. This may help.
Thanks Earn for that I was at the Velux blinds on my window for last hour trying to remove it 👍
thanks for sharing this was really useful. one thing that helped me was to use a screwdriver to pry out the main blinds requires no force.
Great video! Agreed this perfectly demonstrated how to remove the cassette. Thanks!
An absolute life saver, thank you. As you say, the official Velux video is pretty useless!
Awesome explanation! You saved me hours! Thank you
Thank you very very much from Ribadesella, Asturias
Extremely useful for seeing how to dismount the blind. The Velux video that I found was not at all helpful for doing this.
So helpful a video. Explained properly. Thank you so much.
Couldn't have done it without you, mate!
Thanks your vid just helped me take a blind unit off the window. Great video.
Lol everyone is here because of velux' ridiculous video which shows nothing helpful whatsoever. Just some guy pulling the cassette off the frame from 12 feet away with no explanation. This is much better thanks.
They have disabled the comments on their silly video.
Brilliant! You've saved me a lot of heartache!
Thank you so much. Replacement fitted!!
This was great! Thank you for making this!!
That’s great, very helpful 👍👍, I spent a while trying to work this out before I watched this 👍👍
is this the SAME method for the SOLAR powered units? im scared to pull on the part too hard and be in a mess! cant find any clear info on it...
Really helpful! The velux video was gunk!
Excellent video. Thank you!
Thanks :) video helped me to take it down without breaking
Thanks for a great and clarifying video.
Thank you. I have a newer blind I need to remove, which looks more like the one in the Velux video. Hope mine goes as easy as shown in the Velux video - otherwise I’ll refer to your video 👍🙏
Mate! Thank you!!! Very much appreciated!
Thank you so much, saved me a headache!
Man you saved my day. Thank you very much.
Excellent video. Good explanation.
Thank you - what a useful video!
Very helpful. Thank you. Just what was needed.
Thank you! Still cannot get it down, but at least I know how to do it.
Aaaand it is down. You are a shining star in this corporate darkness if muddled information.
Really helpful - better than the velux video 👍
Very helpful video, thanks for posting it.
Super helpful. Thank you!
Thank you my friend, i love you!!
Cheers for this, very useful 👍
You are a star !!! Thanks so much !
Thank you so much, doing my own DIY this is really helpful 😊
