Well, I can understand that ppl who work with deco need some, hoewever a wall full of Xmas stuff? I would declutter much more to get the space.
On normal years I decorate other people's homes and decorate for charity events, so I usually use almost all the Christmas decor I have. 😊
Christmas is the only season we decorate for so we have 12 totes. It will grow as we can afford to upgrade our garland for example from thin cheap kind to lush thick prelit kind 😍
I don't decorate for anyone but ourselves and I have six big toughtotes plus three tree boxes and a big tree bag and small boxes with fake poinsettias and wreaths and wrapping plus gift bags and boxes and bows and ribbons. They're stacked in the basement but still take up about 8 feet of wall space. I don't t do Easter or Halloween other than an orange pumpkin light, but I love Xmas, and I'm also in my 70s so I have stuff from 50 years ago, and gift ornaments from family and children from when I was a school librarian, it all means something to me. I donate several times a year and save things for the reuse centre, and my family. We're all different and have varying reasons for why we do what we do, to each his - or her! - own. One man's, or woman's, meat is another man or woman's poison. And that's okay. The world would be very very boring if everyone was the same as each other. Variety is the spice of life. And yeah, being old means you know a lot of clichés and maxims and idiomatic phrases. Clichés are clichés because they're true. 😉🎄🎄🎄 One last thing, I'm grateful that I have the space to keep what I like and the resources to have obtained them during my life. I know many aren't so lucky, which is why I also donate. 💖
@@ElinWinblad I decorate every room for Christmas as well as outside so I have lots. Each year I try to get rid of something if I bring something new in. That doesn’t always happen though. 🤷🏼♀️

I appreciate that you used the containers that you had. So many times other will dump their old containers to have their storage rooms insta worthy. I think this is beautiful and functional.
So glad you said that. Mine is a hodgepodge of bins and baskets but it mostly works. I don’t have a lot of wall space due to so many windows in our house. I moved here 5 years ago and he already had so much “stuff.” We just need to really work on organizing and decluttering. A lot of stuff needs to go to thrift stores, yard sale, and recycling.
I agree! It bugs me when so many people dump the containers they have to use the newest containers on the latest organizing video…especially the pantry/cabinet organizer ones!

Lol. Exactly what I was thinking. Glad to hear I’m not alone.
My home is quite small, so what I do to help keep my stored decor items under control is designate a finite area for each category and when that's full I don't allow myself to spread out further. For example I have 4 storage boxes for my Christmas decor and everything MUST fit in those 4 boxes. If I buy a new item and it doesn't fit then an older item has to go. I have one closet shelf for my pillows, so if I see a new pillow I think I can't live without I know something old will have to go. For me, this system forces me to really think before I purchase anything new (in the past I've been very prone to impulse purchases!), and it makes storing everything very manageable. Yes, it takes some discipline, but it's worth it for the peace of mind it brings me!
Excellent system, and good for you! I used to do that, but stopped, and now my house is cluttered. This year I'm purging and then going back to the replacement principle.

"Practical" is way better than "beautiful". Your room looks amazing! It's so nice, too, that your bins fit so beautifully, and are only one level deep. You can pull out a bin without having to move others out of the way!

Great job organizing and good advice about linen storage. My linen closet has been the bane of my existence for too long. I'll be flattering you by imitation as soon as I can find similar basket drawers to fit inside my closet!!

Today is THE DAY! You've got me motivated Christina.I take a day every January to "thin the herd" in my storage room. Obviously there are sentimental holiday items, things my now-grown sons made back in the day, and such that will always justify a spot in my storage room. But I go through my fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving, spring/Easter, summer/patriotic and Christmas decor and purge what no longer speaks to me. And I also have an area with non-holiday decor like you (pillow covers, table cloths, wall art, etc.) that is organized. My three best tips: clear tubs that aren't so big that I can't carry them up the stairs, then table clothes and throw blankets stored on hangers inside DT garment bags, land finally abel, label, label!

Wow! What a transformation. I bought some of those ornament storage cases from Bed Bath and Beyond, so glad I did. I also cut down on a lot of boxes by using vacuum bags. ( The bags you fill then suck out all the air with the he vacuum). What a space saver that was. I have a lot of stuff but, only a small space to store it.
You must feel such a sense of relief now that it’s done! The Crafty Organiser, who I also follow, always says “mess causes stress”.....so right!

Thank you. I store my Christmas decor by room. I usually grab my tub marked for the dining room tree and put that tree up first. For my living room tree which I call my Nostalgia tree, we put all of the ornaments that we've collected from various vacations or made on that. When I pack them away I sort out my daughters' into their own boxes so that when they move out they can decorate their own trees.

You are so smart and energetic. Plan to look for shelves and storage containers at Home Depot! My spare bedroom looks twice as bad as your room looked. I have a garage full of crates plus two small outside storage units. Time to purge but it’s so hard because I am 67 and so many items are kept from many years. Can’t do it now with 100 degree weather. In Alabama the falls are great but then there is football! Loved your video.

I have a storage room and I recently bought some clear plastic containers to store all my Christmas decorations that was before in cardboard boxes. Now I can see them and it looks more organized and clean. 😉

This is awesome Christina! You did a great job! I’m into a lot of organizing this year! I store my seasonal decorations in bins decided by colours and keep them in a storage room in my basement. But my crafting things are all over the house, I’m working on organizing those items so it will be easier for me to find things faster and be more productive.

Interesting that I landed on this vlog where you’re putting up movable shelving to use for storage. I have access to a basement storage area that is surrounded with wire shelving, and I’m now in the process of changing it out to “custom” built wooden shelving. I did a short wall first and I’m gladly amazed how much more room, both floor wise, and shelving space to put stuff. I absolutely will not fill the spaces, but to just not have items crammed and to be able to get all like with like-kitchen, seasonal etc. Definitely up off the floor is so much better, both visually and convenient.

Great video. Thanks for sharing.. we use bins as well ,but have color coded them ,all red for Christmas, Orange for harvest and blue for Easter with green colored for odds and ends. After each holiday I try to thin out items accumulated especially if I have made new purchases for that holiday. I wish I had a designated room for storage , most everything goes out in the garage.
My Christmas decor bins: red for decor/ornaments etc(each in separate totes but all same style and red tote), green toes for all garland, greenery, wreaths and lights.😃
We retired and moved to a smaller home with a smaller garage. I made the decision to keep only what fits in the house so my husband had garage space. I chose a spare bedroom for my craft/collectibles room and then chose the entire upper shelf of the closet for holiday decor. I filled it with containers I had and clear sweater boxes from Dollar tree. Then I filled them with holiday decor by season and color like you did. I started picking my favorite things when it was full I donated everything left and sold all the totes on Facebook. I love looking up there and thinking up holiday designs.
I live in a mobile home so there is no room for storage. We put up a shed we picked up from Rona and most the stuff goes out there in bins. I usually just decorate for Christmas, but! I do change out my curtains, flowers, pillows etc. for Spring/Summer and then Fall/Winter(Mainly reds and plaids that take me in to Christmas). I have a wicker laundry basket on top of the counter over my W/D that "stores" my white curtains etc. off season. I do have two Ikea "under the bed" fabric storage bins that store my red and plaid curtains, pillow cases, towels etc. for Fall/Winter. When you live in a small space you have to be so creative with storage. Your storage room may not be pretty, but it is very satisfying for the "organizer" in me.
I am in the process of reorganizing my home, so yes, I have many of those rooms. Putting an order in for those shelves and totes from Home Depot. Thanks. New subbie BTW.
Love that 800 sq ft home/office! Looks so welcoming! Saw the video where you did the fireplace surround. Still looks beautiful! It really does make a difference to use the vertical space! And it seems the planning stage is equally important - knowing the containers you will use and the exact measurements of wall space etc. Thanks for sharing this. This would help with organizing a craft room too!

Nicely done! I recently reorganized our Christmas decor as well. I have three themed trees, with a separate bin for the ornaments that go on each one. Fragile ornaments are wrapped in toilet paper for protection. I also have a bin that's just for indoor lights. I used to wrap the lights around wooden frames, but now I simply wrap them around my hand as they come off the tree, then place each string into its own plastic shopping bag. The colored lights go in a colored bag (any color), and the white ones go in a white bag. That way I know at a glance which is which. I've never had trouble untangling the strings the following year, and they fit so much better in the bin now. I keep my trees in their original boxes because they're tidy and compact. Other bins hold home decor and exterior lights. All bins are labeled with a 3x5 card affixed with packing tape, but I really like the look of your printed labels. Now to tackle my workshop.... :)

i am doing thie but in my basement i bought 3 as well. it is a life changing
I store my seasonal decor the same way. I do have it color/theme sorted. I no longer own a home so in my rental I have the garage walls lined with similar shelving. All seasonal decor, silk florals/wreaths, and fabric are stored in bins. This year I sorted Christmas bins of decor for my adult kids to take with them when they leave home (college kids). This will make decluttering easier as I am free to donate/sell any of the remaining decor.
Looks awesome!! Most of us have unorganized spaces like this, I myself have been working on reorganizing my storage space and craft room, desperately needed it!!

I love your storage room. Those IKEA are marvelous. What a great way to store your linens..pillows. I love decor pillows but they do take a lot of space. The vertical storage of the pillow covers is great. I tried to get my grandson to use that when I showed him his tee shirt drawer and how he could see all and not have to paw through stacks and mess them up. But... 🤷♀️. I need a bigger house so I can have a storage room and a craft room. May be moving so??? Will use smaller bedroom for sleeping and the larger for crafting and storage. My husband bought himself a new big shed, and gave me our wooden summerhouse to use as a craft room, I had so much “stuff” I bought 4 shelving units and because I would be in and out of the boxes, I bought open top boxes for a lot if my craft items, and I also used the big bins, and 2x6 draw tall units. My husband says our loft looks worse than your storage room before you started, but I’ve never been up there, that is my hubby’s domain 💐💐💐💐💐💐
Just did this for all the decor from holidays. I was able to spare a shelf for all the large kitchen appliances that were used less than once a month.

The house I'm renting only has a few kitchen cabinets no bedroom closets , I have armoires but my second bedroom needs a lot of TLC. We used these same shelves to keep decorations in our garage. I have a big closet in the Bonus Room over our garage that I keep things I think is temperature sensitive in that big closet. I also leave my tree standing, the branches fold up and I have a standup bag that it's in and it rolls down and bunches under the tress so it looks like the burlap root ball of a live tree. I do cover it with a velvet skirt. It looks a bit more elegant. LOL HUGS~Donna

I don’t often leave you to Collins, but that bit about keeping things with original packaging that makes sense love that, or in my case, I would find something suitable in for packaging for say 20 or 30 pencils

I have an extra bedroom that has been used for extra storage for a good 12 years (almost 13). I have several storage bins but it still looks like a tornado never left Kansas (a reference from The Wizard of Oz). Adding the shelves to help organize is a great idea. I am going to try that.

I appreciate a realistic video of one way to manage stuff you love and want to keep. We can’t all be Home Edit perfect and mist of us don’t have tbe budgets for designer storage solutions. I wish I gad a spare room. As it is I m thinking of chrtaining iff one side if my dink groom and putting shelving and every bin I have labelled, easy access and hidden. A little but lime this but behind some diy drapes in the room that I can squeeze some footahe from. You have a lovely home. Thanks for the tips.

I would like to see the storage in your front room (?) for vases etc. I currently have mine on open white shelving as you do, but it isn’t as pretty to look at as I thought it might be. I have limited storage and need to decide what works best on open shelves and what might be better to box up and store under a bed or in the closet.
I only have a short storage area under my stairs. I rotate my bins every time I put away a decor section ( Christmas/valentines/ spring and the general decor I have to take down to replace with Christmas etc) it is such a tiny spot I have to deal with it or I can't enter our rec room in the basement if it's all spilling out 😅 it also keeps me from keeping more than I need and evaluating what I actually want! I actually have to go through it again soon ....so great timing with the video! 😁👍💕
