- Around the same time as Dusty Springfield recorded the Diane Warren/Robbie Buchanan song 'Any other fool', Sadao Watanabe and Patti Austin memorialised this beautiful ballad on his LP 'Front Seat'.
There is no denying the power and range of Patti's voice; it always seems to me that Ms Austin is somehow not regarded in the same group as a Chaka or an Aretha or Dionne, but her voice has such a unique sound and it has been used so exquisitely on such gems as 'Baby come to me' & 'How do you keep the music playing' (both with James Ingram); 'It's gonna be special' and 'The girl who used to be me' among her huge discography.
Patti Austin can and has sung every genre, crossing pop, jazz, r&b, funk with ease and expert skill. Although i prefer the Dusty Springfield version of this song; there is no doubt that Patti outsings most vocalists on the planet, this rendition of the mid tempo love song is a great merging of the talents of the Sax supremo Sadao Watanabe and the potent Patti Austin. She should have won a Grammy (or at least been nominated for a Grammy) for that song that year. Her performance, the arrangement and Sadao's sax fills all conspired to make this one of the best recorded versions of this song ever made. Still gives me goosebumps to this day. Luv you Patti Austin. Your vocals are simply amazing. ❤

I'm so glad I found this song. I remember falling in love with this song the first time I heard it. Her voice is perfect and the lingering saxophone adds the sultry jazz sound.

The best thing she's ever done and contractually, at the time of it's release, it could only be released on his album....not hers. Ironic.
From 1990-1993, I made 9 mixed tapes of songs I loved at the time. This was one of the songs on there. I had love songs, country songs, easy listening, soft rock, smooth r&b. I kept the mixed tapes until 2008. A lot of those songs were 1 hit wonders, thanks to youtube and Pandora I made a playlist based on songs I remembered from the tapes. This song does not appear on pandora however 😢. Patti Austin, Roberta Flack, Anita Baker all day everyday.

Heard this song had been promised to Dusty & somehow went to Patti & Sadao first. Their version is beautiful no doubt, but treat yourself to Dusty's cover for a masterpiece.
I did check it out. To each his own. I like Patti’s rendition much more. She has power, emotion and strength in her vocals. It’s sets a complete well rounded mood to this song. Love gained and lost is powerful, regrets can linger for a long time and she conveys it easily.

Patti Austin is great. Her biggest downfall was being overweight for the majority of her career. A good appearance sells records especially with women singers. If she would have looked like she did in the later part of her career after weight loss surgery she would have been a huge star. It's sad but it's true.
