    I started my painting business last season. I worked for a small bussiness painting company for 3 years before I did this. I really am glad I worked for an experienced painter (40+years of experience). I learned so much from those three years. This also allowed me to slowly build up my equipment over the years. There is so much to painting. I keep learning every job I am on. I was lucky enough to get quality equipment over the years working for my former ft employer (Airless Sprayers, Cup Guns, Pump Staging, compressors, pressure washers, Cargo Van, Trailers, ladders etc) to really set myself up for success when I decided I wanted to go out on my own. I would not trade those three years for anything. Invaluable. Now my former boss even sub contracts me for jobs. I stick to residential mainly exterior and finished last season with a profit Margin of 39k. I would highly recommend to gain experience before you go into business for yourself. It will pay dividends. I still lost money on a couple jobs this last year so no matter how long you paint you are still gonna fail from time to time. But use it as motivation! Great channel!

      Thanks for the comment! To each his own! It makes me happy to hear you are finding success in your business. Some people have been really successful without the 3 year apprentice period, but it wouldn't hurt either. But I don't believe it's necessary for creating a great business, for those reading.
      Cheers!

      PaintingBusinessPro I certainly agree. Watching videos such as this and attending seminars or training such as yours I would highly recommend. I've watched every single one of your videos and would like to let folks know that are watching your videos that you are teaching the correct way, I've learned from your videos and tweaked a few different things and they have saved me time, and the saying goes "time is money". I have laborers and painters that work for me and I have recommended that they watch these videos, because they are straight forward and correct.

      Awesome comment man. I started today on my first job as my own boss and the feeling is great! I’ve worked construction since I was 16 and in my early twenties I worked for a LLC painting company for 3 years also. Sadly, I had most of my equipment stolen. But thankful I still have the essentials. Wish me luck! Awesome channel by the way, I just subscribed!

      In general, I'd say any time is a great time to get started in this business. Simply because there is SO MUCH work out there, and there are a ton of very poor competitors who need to get pushed out of the market before it truly becomes a competitive market.
      Competition is very low in our industry, which means there is a ton of opportunity for people who approach it with a business mindset, and actually operate with integrity.
      When operating with integrity is enough to set you apart from the competition, that's a good sign! A multi million dollar painting company that nets over $300k a year is very achievable over a period of only 3-5 years.

    I'm very impressed. Thanks for sharing. My question is 1. once you hire subcontractors they will publicize their own painting company, do you ask them not to? And display your company name?
    2. Do you let the home owner that you will subcontract the painting to someone else? Your answer will be appreciated.

    • @PaintingBusinessPro
      @PaintingBusinessPro  6 років тому +8

      1. No they are working for us, representing us. If they ever representing anyone but us, they no longer work for us. This is standard.
      2. Sometimes they know sometimes they don't. If they ask I don't hide anything. Whether I use subs or employees, they are human beings executing the promised job. And these aren't just the lowest bidders on craigslist. They are my guys. Subbing just makes a lot of the business easier. But they are our guys, I select them just like I would employees, they have experience, they do great work. They just get paid as a 1099 instead of W2, in short.

    Can you start a small painting business as a part time owner/operator? Long story short, I want to diversify while continuing my career as a Sr. Engineer. I have experience launching a successful on-line retail store working it part time (25 hours a week) and it took 2 years for it to become successful while I worked my full time job. I am not looking for a short cut as I know how much hard work it takes to achieve small business success along with a clear learning curve. My research has led me to this video and your expertise. What would be your general advice to my situation to enter this field? (Thank you in advance.)

    I’ve been in the field for 22 years. I have experience in residential, commercial, and industrial maintenance, everything from custom finishes in architectural coatings, to production, and field logistics. I’m considering getting out of the field, because it’s impossible to start a business and bid against these inexperienced contractors (which I find offensive that people just start their own painting business without having to bleed in the field first)! So how does one just magically start their own business again, without knowledge of product and substrate, application methods, problem solving in the field, let alone someone with a vast amount of experience? Because I am at a loss!

    • @PaintingBusinessPro
      @PaintingBusinessPro  6 років тому

      Just like you start any business. If you were to start a painting company tomorrow, you could do that. The knowledge can be learned and taught. There isn't a shot cut, but there are some creative ways to keep it really simple at the beginning so you can gain that necessary experience to expand the company. I can't answer it all here, obviously.

    I booked a 5000 job for him, shall I shall I tell him we share 50/50 for 5000 as well as expenses such as paint and material?
    What is the best way you think?
    I appreciate your quick answer

    • @PaintingBusinessPro
      @PaintingBusinessPro  6 років тому +2

      You can have him do the job for $2500-$3500 and he buys materials and any price in there will make you great profit. To build a large business, you'll ultimately need to payout 50%. But for now, you can pay out less and still have very healthy profits.
      You can also use paying more initially to find better subs and make transitioning to 50% easier by having better subs and slowly finding cheaper great subs.

Went to school for graphic design/advertising and did painting and light remo work for this guy every summer. I ran a small signs and graphic shop for two years while still doing some painting on the side. Long story short, I am giving my full time into painting.
    I have the advertising knowledge and labor skills. But I need to learn more in depth like prep work or variety of tools to use on more complex jobs like painting outside.
    I've only done interior painting. Also, I need to learn more on estimating!! lol I live in Boston, MA btw.
