having the x16 slot at the bottom on the kingpin board is if someone was doing ln2 and wanted to move the gpu further away from the cpu socket when it has the ln2 pot on. extremely niche and will get used by .000000001 percent of users, but its just one of those small details for a small crowd of users
Four months later the Asus Z790 Apex price is a third more and not in retail stock anywhere during my Internet search. So, I have the EVGA Z790 Dark Kingpin by default.
And now I can't find the kingpin anywhere for sale...
Amazon has 1 new Kingpin in stock for just under $500. The ASUS board is close to $1,000 new on Amazon. Quite the price difference.

I have the Apex board, but I really like where EVGA put the 8-pin EPS Power Connectors....would make for a much shorter and neater run with my setup if Apex would also place them there.

@@midoribookstore the bulk of ppl that watch hardware stuff on youtube ... aren't going to be using LN2 to overclock.
Also no one hires an assistant to keep Ln2 poured onto a prepped system to play on an "overclocked " system for their daily gaming use desktop.
Ln2 OC's should have an exclusive list as they are as u say hotdog water , as they are 1 offs and aren't actually being used to game on a daily basis at the listed speeds. The fact that Ln2 benchmarks hold the top slots on all the OC lists is kinda clown shoe.

Just put 1.26v CPU VDDQ on the DARK KINGPIN. Only Green OEMs have voltage drop on the DARK KP.
you do realize since 12th gen intel they separated out the IMC voltage into its own power rail (vdd2) while ddr5 is just vdd. I believes you can separate them by 100mV and still be perfectly safe. So for example 1.6V to vdd and 1.5V or even 1.45V to vdd2 should be safe. decoupling them more than that could fry the memory stick from my understanding.
Eyo Jufes I think ASUS measures voltage differently than other manufacturers. Their sensors are deriving voltages differently. I'm sure the Buildzoid fans could explain... I kno rite... The XOCers 😅😂

Don’t think that EVGA is leaving the motherboard people behind. This generation is really complicated. I don’t blame EVGA. Also I think they outsource their micro code firmware coding (don’t quote me on that). I’m going to keep my z690 dark. I noticed a big improvement going from a Strix E z690 to a dark. Went from 6400 to 6800Mhz easily
I would use a good quality multimeter to measure the voltages. Should be easy to measure on the Dark with the ProbIt header. Little more difficult on the Asus, but it should still have read pads on the board.

It is a great board. Just bios bugs and board came out later than Asus. If you don’t own it. Can’t talk in it. My z690 dark works fine with 6800Mhz ram

Only thing I know : the 2 apex Z790 I had were not working. Switched to MSI Z790 carbon : works flawlessly for half the price, with good oc on my 13900kf and gskill 6600...
Asus is shit man. I always recommend MSI. My z690 tomahawk has 7200mhz ram and 13700k at 5.3ghz all the time and its flawless. Only thing asus is good at is RMA
Top content man. Seems like Apex is still the king of 2 dimm z790's, though Tachyon's XMP tolerance, I've read, is better than Apex's, works with 8000mhz sticks even, provided cpu's imc is not gutter tier. But that is of course hearsay from the webs, I don't own either.
Killer Content with the comparison Jufes. Gratefully, have a extreme z790 and vanilla 13900k can reach 7800 mhz stable with a noctua fan full blast on the rams. Considering a waterblock for the trident z rgb. Even with leds off and no noctua fan, it's quick to overheat at 7800 mhz once they reach 47 celcius.
My tridents are stable to 67c which is max they will get to with no airflow on the dark at 7800 during memtesting. Ofc i don’t let them get that high during normal operation but i removed airflow from them to test at what point they got unstable. Trfc is the most temperature sensitive timing you can always increase this if you are unable to cool your modules enough to keep them stable during ram stability tests.
I have the Z790 Hero with a 13900K and GSkill 7600 CL36 1.4v with optimized timings and a RAM fan and never seen them above 50 in day-to-day usage. Waterblocking the RAM to get 200 Mhz extra doesn't make much sense to me tbh, the speed gain is going to be imperceptible.
@Miskatonic University can push 7800 and 8000 now @ 47 celcius on water. Couldn't do that on air before. Wouldn't even boot.
Ddr4 sticks have no improvement on water.
Ddr5 has pmic on one side of stick. Consider that the hotspot. Once that memory controller overheats, stability rises.
Simple thermodynamics. Shouldn't have to explain that.plus people actually have made videos about it.
@@cjceeez9897 pmic is not a memory controller only a power ic, why are your sticks 47c on water? I run 8400 on aircooled sticks at 35c during heavy mem tests. Memory ics are cold when booting so it makes no sense that you couldn’t boot 8000 on air unless you have serious training issues.

Tight timings increase temps by the way. Hogwarts legacy rtx and cyberpunk 2077 pt heat things up.
Ram overclocked, cpu overclocked, gpu overclocked all underwater in 1 loop.
I always wondered what the actual voltages were on asus boards when measured with a meter. I've always found they overclock at least a bin higher than their competition. Makes me think they just run higher voltage than you're actually setting. Can't just be some magic lol.

I was originally going to hold out for this EVGA board, but in retrospect I'm not comfortable buying it with EVGA downsizing as a company which is just unfortunate. Impressions are pretty much what I expected. Problem is I now cannot buy a Z790 Apex or Tachyon because they've been sold out for months.
I am curious if ground the board to the power supply with the mounting screws would create higher stability. OC testing boards on the box seems to leave Performance on the table considering the voltages are so sensitive. Seems worth a test.
Everyone who has bought their Z690 and Z790 boards could have told you their BIOS team is beyond terrible. I have lost count of the number of bad revisions they have released in the past year.
Bottom x16 slot is cuz if u use a tower cooler it can interfere with the gpu

After having Apex'es, Unify-X, Dark KP i went to Tachyon. Great board, couple of glitches but boy oh boy - it just does great job with mem overclocking at low voltages.

Hi valdis my tachyon arrived few days ago and just set it up yesterday, I have a question for you do you notice your vddq voltages sky rocketing in a game for example? I was just mid game and triggered pmic high temp so checked hwinfo all my vdd(swa), vddq(swb), vpp(swc), 1.8V and 1.0V vout are all displaying 3.825V vin voltage is sitting at 17.8W and total power at 31.9W are you having similiar happen? I am trying to figure out if this is a visual bug or something that is actually happening and shortening the life of my ddr5. any help would be appreciated.
@@blown454350 Nothing to worry about, hw bug, have seen this before. In my case solution was to bump up SA voltage from 1.27 to 1.3, never have seen that afterwords.

@@blown454350 first sign before this happens - you loose all temp readings for dimm modules, after that you’ll start go get false readings.
I'm running the MSI MEG Z790 ACE but I did consider the EVGA board but did not buy as it was not available when I needed one and neither were the ASUS boards. Thanks for sharing your findings with us.
Meg ace is a nice board but the mem oc was a little disappointing for me. The pci-e layout and thunderbolt is the nicest layout of all the boards however.

Having full 16 lanes on the second slot is useful if you buy engineering sample cpus that have the first pcie slot disabled. But if you're buying those things then this motherboard isn't even on your radar with that insane drunk pricing.

Asus motherboard will hit 8000 but it’s not actual same as kingpin hitting 8000 mhz. I prefer making bios videos with banchmark better

I had the Apex Z690 version of this board when it first came out which was a nightmare for me and I ended up finally getting refunded for it from Asus. Then I went for the Z690 Dark which was great until I paired it with my Zotac 4090 Amp Extreme Airo, and then it started having some weird issues. Now I have moved on to the Z790 Dark and everything is working fine. It just seems like the a lot of Z690 boards were rushed when they were made and not made properly in some cases.
What was the issue you had with your zotac card?
@@Multimeter1 I got my Zotac card on launch day and when I got it half of the led lights were dead on it, and then anytime I tried pairing it with 64GB of ddr5 memory on my Z690 Dark board; the board would not post, but for some reason 32GB worked fine with it, and when I upgraded my system to the 13900ks the card just stopped working altogether, and I could not even get into bios anymore, and all my system would do was show memory error post codes, but then when I threw in my old rx 6900 xt it worked fine, so I ended up doing an rma on my Zotac card, and got a new one from zotac, and then I upgraded to the z790 dark kingpin board, and now everything works fine with 64GB of ram installed.
Sir, I came in today the help to clarify the community about this both motherboards and they are the best hardware available. I have years using the maximus VIII hero, and now the z690 strix. I can’t deal with the asus crate in a ROG product, my good felling has gone is good hardware but software is crap. The is no future in asus with dealing armoury crate on my point of view Evga is the way. 😊

I have a 13900kf and aorus master with 7200mhz cl 34 xmp and I think I made the best decision with that board. I haven't OC yet and my cinebench r23 score is over 40k

Neither. These are 2 DIMM boards made for overclocking and max out at 64GB.

The newest 2.10 bios is bad. Though 2.05 or 2.08 works fine. Love my Z690 dark so far.
