The Old Norse form of the word was berserkr likely means "bear-shirt." Ulfheðnar - wolf warriors appear among the legends of the Indo-Europeans, Turks, Mongols, and Native American cultures. The Germanic wolf-warriors have left their trace through shields and standards that were captured by the Romans and displayed in the armilustrium in Rome.

    00:00- Intro
    04:15- Ulfhednar
    07:45- Berserkers
Frenzy warriors wearing the skins of wolves called Ulfheðnar ("Wolf-Coats"; singular Ulfheðinn), are mentioned in the Vatnsdæla saga, the Haraldskvæði and the Grettis saga and are consistently referred to in the sagas as a group of berserkers, always presented as the elite following of the first Norwegian king Harald Fairhair. They were said to wear the pelt of a wolf over their chainmail when they entered battle. Unlike berserkers, direct references to ulfheðnar are scant. It is proposed by some authors that the berserkers drew their power from the bear and were devoted to the bear cult, which was once widespread across the northern hemisphere. The berserkers maintained their religious observances despite their fighting prowess, as the Svarfdæla saga tells of a challenge to single-combat that was postponed by a berserker until three days after Yule. The bodies of dead berserkers were laid out in bearskins prior to their funeral rites.

The northman did such an amazing job showing Ulfhednar/Berserker
The ritual scene is just work of art, its in one long continues shot, when they start their transformation camera slowly moves toward amleth like some entity is crawling toward him and then suddenly he gets possessed by it.that scene uses archeological and Icelandic sagas but also one important source from Byzantine imperator in the book of ceremonies, Varangians did dance ritualt in animal skin, there definitely were varangian berserkers

From the song "Ulfhednar" by Hulkoff:
My kin and my bloodline, forever forsaken
What's gone is gone, it's the path I have taken
The force of the wolf-skull is within my senses
It weakens compassion but strengthens defenses
The hatred is cookin, raging and burning
Yet fades in comparison to ravenous yearning
Warmed by the wolf pelt and anticipation
The blood thirst is craving a chance to hydration
The wolves are coming through the forest under silence
    Hide from all the violence
    Find a hole
The wolves are coming for the killing and the fire
    Driven by desire
    For silver and your soul
My innocence died with the blood that I tasted
What's gone is gone but there is nothing wasted
Born by the bow into famine and hunger
The wolf cult elected me when I was younger
They took me to wilderness and to selection
The true wolf of Odin must train to perfection
For combat and reaving the power is growing
The iris turned yellow in eyes that are glowing
The wolves are coming through the forest under silence
    Hide from all the violence
    Find a hole
The wolves are coming for the killing and the fire
    Driven by desire

    Find a hole
The wolves are coming for the killing and the fire
    Driven by desire
    For silver and your soul
Hardened by forests and life in the field
True to the wolves I am biting the shield
Lying or dying, I care not whichever
My life is the wolf cult and I'm lost forever

Apparently after the success of Braveheart, Mel Gibson decided to do another historical film and for something different he chose Beserkers. But because there's little information and he had a hard time writing a main character as a Beserker that the audience could sympathise with or relate to and other personal problems in his life, the project fell apart.

Wanted to say I appreciate it work, first off. Secondly, I know u make the comment about "when we were all one people" often when referring to northern Europeans as a whole. I'm curious about and would love to see a video on what u think about northern Europeans that were there in northern Europe before the steppe herder migration, like those during the Mesolithic. I had my DNA tested, and I'm the I1 Haplogroup, which is typically associated with the Norse as an ethnic group, and as it's the oldest, or one of the oldest, Haplogroup in Europe, it has a lot more leftover Mesolithic admixture. There's another gent who's an academic and a Norwegian and whose channel name is Viking Stories who does fantastic work as well. I would love to see what ur thoughts are on this as a general concept. Thanks and cheers!

@@gcanaday1 Right. So, when u say Pontic steppe people, you're talking about the Indo-Europeans, correct? We are definitely descended from them, but also from other populations that were in Europe before that migration. It's those people I'd like to know his thoughts on, and how they interacted and were integrated into the Indo-European population as a whole.

I run a tannery. I tan a lot of bear hides, mostly black bears but occasionally brown bear from Russia or Alaska. I’ve only done a couple wolves though. Since I have a lot of bear skins lying around my house I’ve often wondered how these would be worn around one’s body. It would have to be a younger or not to large brown bear hide or else it would be dragging on the floor.

I wonder if Berserkers maybe just suffered from PTSD due to war. This can make people aggressive and put them in a constant survival mode if not treated properly. Your explanation certainly reminds me of it. Not able to perform in society anymore, not able to emotionally connect and thus they never left the battlefield. I like the shapeshifting comparison here as it seems logical as people come back changed.

From what ive gathered over the years of researching these warrior cults it seems to suggest that ulfhednar were a more cohesive group formed of around 6 to 12 men where as the berserkers were seen to be either solo or on rare occasions a group of 3 but you could expect berserk to be more aggressive in this manners such as in fighting for loot or just generally being not great team players opting to much rather kill the others and just take the plunder for themselves hence why many community would hold berserkers at arms length and put them further out of the community domains where as ulfhednar were employed even by the jarl as personal body guard due to them being far more loyal when the coin is right and often much more effective on the battlefield as they would move like how a pack would be intended - alpha takes lead and the rest follow suit
Many of the varangian guards in the byzantine empire were supposedly affiliated with the same cults and sources say about them doing the ritual dance before battle working themselves into a wild fury but big difference between the varangian and just regular units varangian were much more mature & battle tested showing a far greater control and effectiveness when put to use not just blindly windmilling till they hit something but actually using battle tactics and stedfast with their loyalty to the empire since they were being paid upwards of 40× the regular pay in gold hence why absolutely everyone and their gran wanted to join
Most famous was herald hardrada whom gave himself a fake name so he could join as it was looked down upon for royalty to be on the front line but herald didnt give a fuck

Some may have pretended to have the ability in order to intimidate and manipulate others, but when someone goes berserk for real, it's a truly scary thing. They don't seem to feel pain in a normal way, are incredibly quick with their actions, want to fight, and can lash out irrational. If I should guess about what happens, I would say they are naturally super pumped up on adrenaline and may act violently before they think of the consequences. In my opinion, when Freydis came out of the tent in Vinland, she was likely berserk, and the locals wisely retreated. You really don't want any part of berserkers. You may be able to take them, but it will cost you dearly.

Two questions...in Anglo Saxon law outlaws are named "Wolf's Heads" that any man might slay and bring the head to their Earl for reward.
How is Ulfhednar different from this?
My other question is related to the Berserkers, that I understood to be possessed of the "battle madness" that rendered them both fearless and oblivious to pain and injury. I have experienced this, when a bully assaulted me, years ago and the battle rage took me...he was bigger but I throttled him till they pried me off his bucking torso. He never bothered me again...and, no, I didn't kill him, he did that himself 2 years later...driving drunk.
So is the Berserker rage a thing of the past....a "bear spirit" thing...or the AMOK rage that harnesses adrenaline and dopamine to turn little people into supermen as in the Irish tale of Cucuhulain, because it seems to me there is more to this story...

As with mortals, only women (or old men, basically, weak people) are morally allowed to practice such things.
