hello Skinden:) much Respect for your Coment and Culture! im not from norway or viking related -central Europe, Austria- so my grand-grand-grand elders where celtics. My opinion is, its important to not forget where you come from, the culture, the roots... sometimes it looks like modern livestyle wants to delete all of that diversity in culture, and if your against it, youre called a nazi - speaking of europe- my opinion: people and coulture should just live next and with each other in peace and fucking respect each others culture. this would make life so much easier:) Peace, Dude ✊

@@Absmnd647 I think you've got things a bit misconstrued. Nazi's wanna destroy diversity and culture, no ones called a Nazi because they like or celebrate the culture they come from, unless that culture is somehow hinged on racial superiority and eugenics which I'm pretty sure isn't the case. Celebrating culture and diversity is specifically something Nazi's were against.

If you are talking of the first nation in North Amrica I think the Vikings left because we had respect for the first nation over in America. No one knows why Vikings left, but reading between the lines it might have been the reason why. Today the date of when Vikings settled on the east north coast over there, It is now 1000 years ago and I think the history will continue to push into the year around 900. The history of Norwegian/Icelandic settlement over there is pushing older the more we digg into it.Carbon testing of the wood the Vikings used on the Viking houses over there has been used now in Newfoundland.

Here in Scotland, up in the Shetland Isles, Lerwick hosts "Up Helly Aa" - a Viking fire festival procession that echoes galley burning pagan Norse rituals at the cremation of great Chieftans, and religious ceremonies to mark the Sun's return after the winter solstice. Up Helly Aa is held annually on the last Tuesday in January. Medieval Shetland guizers (skeklers) and an army of Vikings march through the streets of Lerwick carrying blazing torches. UA-cam has many videos of this spectacular event.

In Scotland, we have a New Year tradition called 'First Footing', in which the first visitor to your home in the New Year should always be tall, with dark hair. It's seen as a portent of good fortune for the rest of the year. To have a blonde haired male be your first foot is considered bad luck. This dates all the way back to the Viking 'invasions', where the fair haired Norse were to be feared.
Also in the North West of Scotland, there's a county called 'Sutherland', literal meaning 'Southern land'. This was one of the main areas of Scotland which was settled by the Norwegian Vikings, and was therefore, their Southern land.
There's a village in the area called 'Achiltibuie', which in Scots Gaelic is 'Achd Ille Bhuidhe', which translates as 'Field of the Yellow haired boy', again, dating back to the Norwegian Vikings settling in the area.

"Bitter is the wind tonight It tosses the ocean’s white hair Tonight I fear not the fierce warriors of Norway Coursing on the Irish sea" - Irish poem.
I certainly agree with your assessment for the most part but I also think that who the most fearsome warriors from Norway were from might also depend on whom you asked at the time. The "Vestfaldingi" or men of Vestfold/Viken engaged in many attacks particularly on the Carolingians and that area seems to have been a hub of where many of those attacks launched from.

A battle that i would love to know more about is the battle of Fýrisvellir that took place in Sweden in the late 900s between the new Swedish king Erik Segersäll and the son of the previous king, who was backed by the Jomsvikings and possibly the kingdom of Denmark. Sadly we don't know a whole lot more than this. In the late 1600s the Swedish royal castle Tre Kronor burned down with a vast amount of documents and books covering the mid- to late middle ages in Sweden, which possibly could have contained more info about this battle and a bunch of other stuff as well.

Same happened several centuries later with England and the Netherlands. England wanted to get rid of the catholic king Jacobus and so 'invited' the Dutch Stadhouder Willem III to come to England (with his wife who was a full niece of Jacobus) and defeat Jacobus ("Glorious Revolution").
He succeeded in invading England and became king Willem III of England, Willem I of Ireland ('King Billy') and Willem II of Scotland (confusing, yes). He was invited and had English help because they didn't want a second 'War of the roses' but also they preferred a protestant on the throne (which Willem III was). He ruled 4 countries from 1691 till his death in 1702.
Willem invaded with 14.000 Dutch en 7.000 'others' (including Huguenots, English, Scots, Germans, Danes, French, Swedes, Fins (in bearskins), Polish, Greek and Swiss soldiers); his armada of 500 ships was 4 times larger than the Spanish armada of 1588.
The people of Norway apparently had better things to do that year (1688) and/or were probably already planning the great northern war (1700-1721) against Sweden. ;-)

The shipbuilding technique of the "klink" built vessels most likely came from Norway. It is the backbone of the Viking age in which being a Viking was only for the few that sought fame and fortune outside the boundaries of the kingdom. It was an occupation, a job. That is important to know. The eldest son usually continued the line of farming and upkeep of the family property, marrying into alliances and the other sons had to seize their land, either by marriage or by conquest. Otherwise, they became mercenaries or were too weak, hence risking the dishonor of being a "skrælling". With scarce farming land and a growing population in Norway, there were naturally unrest and squabbles during recessions and the region was in a constant state of war almost. Those who came out on top could only be the very toughest and the best. I agree though I am a Dane with ancestors traced back to the start of Christianity. Norway had the toughest and fiercest warriors. Those who came out on top could only be the very toughest and the best. My theory is that famine and low access to farming land motivated the start of the Viking age in Norway traveling out pillaging and conquesting land. Danish Vikings started almost half a century after the first landings.
Though we always focus on warriors of this period we tend to miss some of the real power. Technology and statesmanship. What fascinates me is the superior technology this period produced and Viking ingenuity. They were very smart and crafty. They even had contracts, investment, and credit systems through their "bomærke" or stamp. An interesting dissertation from the University of Roskilde explains the old Norse and Dane contract laws and traditions, massively advanced for the period. Traditions and rites you even find in today's business dealings in Scandinavia and the importance of networking. The expansion in the Viking age wasn't only conquest or pillaging, but the ability to hold the land and to develop it into a powerful economic force. I would like to hear more of this if you have any plans for future videos. And thanks for the informative inputs. Great job!

Isn’t true that the French built their fleets from Denmark design of ships? Or would that have the been the Denmark adopted Norway style?

From what i understand it started to develope in the baltic, and then probably spread upwards.
Its also weird to talk about Norwegian, denmark Sweden etc with peoples current sense of geography, i mean whole Southern sweden was denmark while much of western was Norwegian.
But for me it make sense it developed earlier in the baltic and reached the Atlantic along the western coasts where they got improved even more dur to rough weather. 😅

I always find this channel to be a good source of true history or at least as true as we can get them coming from sagas, I know you put a lot of work into including references and links to the sources you find and it is much appreciated.
There is an aspect that I feel that you are leaving out, and that is the bias of the sources of the sagas, most of the surviving sagas from the viking era comes from Iceland, iceland was inhabited by Norwegians, the sagas that survived there are hugely bias and favour Norway as the great nation. History is best decoded by including as many perspectives as possible.
Thank you for putting the time and effort into your amazing videos...
    Kind regards
Ken Rasmussen a Dane living in Trondheim, Norway.

Thanks for the awesome content mate. Always thought about whom would have the strongest vikings - and it kinda makes sense that Norway had them because of the tough terrain - and that is coming from a Dane.
Would you maybe someday be able to make a video about the Viking Faction in For Honor? Quite curious what your take is on it, if it is realistic or not :)

My paternal line is supposedly from the Trondheim area. That part of Norway is a repository for the R1a haplogroup and their is a trail of R1a in the British isles wherever the Vikings settled or raided.

    • @bryanwilliamson5109
      @bryanwilliamson5109 3 роки тому

@Store Patternator from my understanding both R1a and R1b originate somewhere around Southern Ukraine and migrated from there as the Yamnya culture. So yes R1a did migrate into India and Iran but the place where the majority of R1a is, is Eastern Europe with Poland having the highest percentage if memory serves. The main place in Western Europe with R1a is central Norway which I think migrated there with the Boat Axe/Battle Axe culture.
