  • In this video, Don goes over all the different versions of factory seat belts found in 1967-1973 Mercury Cougars and Ford Mustangs. In addition to identifying the different versions, he gives some tips on how to disassemble buckles, replace broken parts, and restore the belts themselves.
There are several clickable links to products in the video, but you can also find just about everything seat belt related here: www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/19...

i enjoy your videos. for those of us that didnt pay attention when we took them out. a good addition to a video like this one would be to go into detail as to how they are mounted. which bolts and washers go to which belt.

Regarding the shoulder strap bushing... It appears to be the same size as the post and bushing used in smaller aircraft restraint systems. Any FAA certified repair station at your local airport will have a drawer full of them to replace the ones in the tens of thousands of older Cessnas and Pipers. The bushings get brittle and break regularly. If shoulder belts are installed it is illegal to fly without the bushing installed. No zip ties or tape allowed.
Now, the trick to installing one is to drop the bushing (it's made of nylon, by the way) into a cup of very hot water and leave it there for a few minutes, thus making it temporarily pliable. Using a pair of pliers, stretch the bushing over the top of the post and let it snap into place. Work quickly though or it will cool off before you're done. A second pair of hands or a vise to hold the part is most helpful. I've done this more than once before flight. I hope that helps.

Cool video. About the bushing on 70 buckle: maybe a 1/8 inch long and Ø3/8 inch piece of air hose will do the trick (haven't tried it yet ;) ) . Best regards, Willem

Great video summary. Have you ever removed the belt from the retractor and cleaned/replaced the belt on a 71? I was able to get one to retract after cleaning the belt but not the other side. Thanks

I have an 1973 Camaro Z28 which I am currently going through compliance to be road legal. An issue with the back retractable lap belts has been raised.
They both have a stitching approx 6 inches from the buckle on the retractable side, about an 1 1/4 inch long. Is this standard factory stitching?

I wonder if they had inertia lock retractors back then because the buckles had the part of the belt you pulled on to tighten your belt up.

They did starting in 1970! The earlier retractors were very short, and you would just adjust the strap on the longer buckle piece to lock yourself in.

Yep, cut my thumb real deep, happened so fast, peels like a razor. Now I tape with aluminum hot water heater duct tape.

Love the videos do you happen to have one that shows how the seatbelts are installed on a 1970 Cougar?

We do not, but they bolt to these anchors: secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/c5zz-61216.html The description for the anchors gives you an idea of where to look for them.

Who sells or may have the clip that the shoulder belt wrapped around while not in use? Have a 68 Cougar with the release button. Glad I saved all them! I'm in the "little" things of my resto I didn't do yrs back. Need a factory steering wheel to and I'm done I think.

+Dadndaughtersinging We do intend to do some diagrams on our website showing which fasteners go where (they are all different) and where the shoulder belts mount, for those who have installed a new headliner and can't find them. The actual installation is straightforward, once you know you have the correct hardware.

Why does nobody make the 1968 shoulder belts anymore? Liability issue?

My 68 came with lap belts only. How hard is it to upgrade to lap/shoulder belts? Is the anchor point for the shoulder belt in the car but just hidden or is it something that has to be added?

why does my 68 have 4 seat belts up front

    • @donrush5690
      @donrush5690 8 років тому

+Jeremy Cook the lap belt was separate from the shoulder belt. Some 68's made before Jan 1 had no shoulder belt, San Jose cars only from my experience.
