I got so lucky, my 2 boys were free, they were pasture pets, lots of ground work done and they were very loveable and respectful. They gave them away so the brothers could stay together
I paid only one hundred dollars for my mule that was only seven years old and a bay color. She was a little skittish to start with but smart and came around pretty good. She is about fourteen now.
I’m in the UK where mules aren’t really a thing, so when we see that a mule is sold for $30,000 I almost died 🫣 They’re all gorgeous by the way.😍👏🏻 Thanks for the education ❤
Hahaha! We almost die when we think of how expensive mules are too! 😬 And thank you! We’re so thankful to have our mules and to get to enjoy this way of life 😊🙏🏼
The way I see it if a gelding can be sold for big money so can a mule, neither can breed. But you do get longer working life from a mule. That way of thinking took the suprise out of the price
the wife shoutout was super nice 😂❤ i just learned mules could be used for riding - super shocking i know haha. but this video was very informative, thank you! i just want to know everything i can about mules, they seem like tricky but hard-earned animals! That peterson mule was amazing, i hope they sold for $20000 😅
I bred and raised registered Paint Horses and never had experience with mules. My friend bought a really nice mule and started showing her all over the country and winning. I didn't even know before that mule shows were a thing!!
Haha that’s awesome! Paints are so cool too… it seems like a lot of them have really good minds 😊 I always think it’s funny on the rare occasion that someone takes a mule to a horse show and wins 😂😊 Ours wouldn’t win any shows, but we sure do enjoy them! 😊
@MTN_BUILT my friend took her mule to mule shows mostly, but occasionally came to our county horse shows in Cleburne, TX. Oh my Paints were overos and many were 3/4 Quarter Horse. Overos originated from "crop out" Quarter horses that came out Painted. They figured Old Fred was a huge contributor yo that.
@MTN_BUILT Yes they are basically Quarter Horses with color. Tricky to breed though because breeding overo to overo can get you a lethal white foal. Many stallions these days are tested for the lethal white gene.
Thanks for your knowledge. I had one old cowboy told me. “A bad horse eats just as much as a good horse” sure it’s the same for mules. Take your time to find the best animal for you.
Thx for sharing the info. A mule will just continue to get better with time as long as they TRUST you, they NEVER forget a bad experience, but trust will make your mule a pleasure to be around, and keep you safe in the back country where there is no room for problems. I have 3 mules and 1 saddle horse and it does work to have a saddle horse to keep all the mules around in the back county, they are a bit "herd bound"🤣🤣
Oh man, I think you are SPOT ON about trust! It’s so crucial for a good experience with a mule 😊 And it sounds like you have the perfect set up with your little herd… that’s exactly what we’re striving for 😊

He rode his mule through and around the tables during the live auction and jumped it on to the stage! Simply incredible partnership! Again, thank you for sharing and keep ‘em coming!
Wow! That’s awesome! He always takes one to the auction at the hunt Expo in Salt Lake too… it always turn a lot of heads! Lol I’ve never met him, but he seems like an awesome guy! Thanks for watching and for the kind words! We always appreciate it 😊

Having a mare will help keep your mules around, but it can also cause alot of herdbound issues. Another point you mentioned is that little mule that just wanted to push and chase the others around? If you introduce a mule like that to cows, in a proper way, they will be a fantastic cow workin mule. Thats one thing i look for in a young mule, the desire to move other animals around. By the way, i LOVE my jackalope cap!
That’s a super good point about causing herd-boundness… we want ours to be just the right amount of herd bound lol And that’s such a good point about that little mule too… he had some spunk to him and I bet he would have loved pushing cows. Our new mule, Josey is shaping up to have a similar amount of spicy-ness lol Thank you SO MUCH for buying a hat- I’m really glad you like it 😊 Thank you for taking time to leave such an informative comment!

@@MTN_BUILT I disagree with you. I think cruelty should be spoken out against every chance we get! Even for growing channels, integrity matters. You seem like great people. Thanks very much for the very interesting videos.
That’s a super good point, and I definitely could have been more clear. All I meant is that I’m not judging people for their upbringing or for the way they’ve been taught to work with livestock. I had the privilege of starting with a blank slate, and choosing a style of stockmanship that was attractive to me from the beginning. A lot of people who are a little rougher on stock come from a lineage of working cowboys, and they do what they need to to get a job done every day. It’s not an excuse to mistreat their horses or mules, but it’s understandable if they’re just doing things the way they’ve been taught their whole life. And packing meat is just referring to mules who are used to get groceries out of the mountains (hunting). 😊 Thank you for watching and for your input- you have a very valid point.

Thank you for watching! So glad to have you along! How exciting! Just remember to relax and have fun! It’s much harder to ride when you’re tense lol! It’s going to be an amazing experience!
Great video guys. I've owned and ridden mules for over 20 years. Had some good ones and also some not so good. You're spot on with your thoughts on buying from someone with references
Thank you! 😊 And yeah, that’s definitely been our experience… if you buy a mistreated mule, it could be a real headache! Thanks for taking time to watch and leave a nice comment- we appreciate it! 😊

I didn't get into horsemanship until my 30s and I started using Clinton Anderson's method and it worked out well. I wonder how that would transfer over to mules.
😂 literally how I got my girl $900 as a yearling and the breeder said the same thing. Didn't have time. She came with a bucket of issues I'm still fixing she's a long yearling now.
I've wanted horses all my life until I was riding a ridge in Red Rock Canyon (near LV) , my horse tripped, and the guide behind me said that's why I ride mules. They don't trip. That would have been good to know before you put me on the giant, ornery beast that didn't want to follow the trail.
Well He found out your exp . Run̈ny Ridges . Horse that Dont pay attention . Is not good .when you got a 10 or 15 foot drop one one side , let alone a 1000 + drop and the other side damn neart straite up .
12:11 Holy cow... Nice ride & nice video.. ..🎶Don't know much about biology, 🎶 But, I saw an other YT vid. - He said : Less water and not so monotonous (uniform) food, than a horse ? So therefor more Ideal for cowboys / trawlers ? - Last Question: Are mules are more expensive than horses ?
Thank you! You’re spot on about mules requiring less food and water (in general). I would say they’re not as good for the average cowboy though because mules lack speed compared to a horse. That being said, there are a lot of great ranch mules out there… horses and mules just have different strengths and weaknesses, and since we never really need to go fast, mules are perfect for us 😊 Mules are getting more expensive, but a high dollar horse still goes for more than a high dollar mule. The gap is getting tighter though 😊
Super good question! It’s just how the animal is put together structurally. Honestly, the main things we look for are good straight legs, big bone, and we don’t like petite mules, so we want something with a good amount of size. 😊
I know next to nothing about mules, but what I’ve learned from you, so my question is are females hinny’s? also, do you have to use a different saddle for your mules than your horses because they certainly have different confirmation?
That’s a super good question! A female mule is actually called a Molly. Henny’s/Hinny’s are similar to mules, but they come from a male horse crossed with a female donkey, while mules come from a female horse and male donkey 😊
@@pennylane428 hi. The mule saddle thing just depends on the mules shape but yes they do require a different type of saddle usually secured with a britchen or a cruper under the tail as things tend to slide forward due to a mules flatter back and A shape shoulders. Of course they all change as time goes by so for me , I've tried alot of different configurations with saddle pads and cinches just to see what works for who. In general though a saddle with mule bars is where to start. Sometimes I look at what I'm using and think .....how did I finally get to this finished set up. Haaa. Trial and error .
@@pennylane428 They also often need a breast plate to prevent slipping back. In most videos you will see them with both the breast plate and britchin behind the bum. Unless they are only being saddled or ridden for a short period of time, where you can get away with it for a little while. The wrong kind of saddle can cause serious discomfort, which becomes pain, and can do permanent damage to their spine and/or musculature.
@@jennyrosd2003I saw someone do a video a couple of years ago(?) on how to fit a saddle pad to a mule, wish I could remember who it was. But he was talking about a mule's longer back and other things, and he cut the pad a bit to get it to fit right, and I still remember someone in the comments expressing their respect that he was willing to cut up whatever brand that expensive pad was to make it fit right.
Thank you so much! We’re enjoying the process of learning to make videos, and we really appreciate your words of encouragement 😊 Thank you for watching and taking time to leave a nice comment!

Is a mule okay for a first equine in your opinion? I don't have any equine experience but I'm super smitten with mules, and would love to have one one day.
Yes I think so, but I would get someone knowledgeable to go with you and look at them. Get a really nice mule for your first one and don’t be afraid to get help if you need it! Ty Evans Every Mulemanship is an awesome podcast and he has a bunch of resources like an online video library as well as clinics all over. It might be a great idea to listen to the podcast and even audit some clinics ☺️👍🏼
how do you train a mule? i want a mule and i would like to train them myself to build that bond, but i have no experience training. how do you go about that?
It’s very similar to training a horse, actually 😊 But it’s really important to give them time to think. I would recommend looking up Ty Evans. He’s a clinician and he’s great with mules 😊
No not with mules. They have really nice hard feet and we usually don’t even run shoes on them. You might watch out that they aren’t club footed but other than that typically hooves on mules aren’t a problem like they can be with horses ☺️
@@MTN_BUILTas a farrier of over 25yrs I agree with this however it’s important to note if you have a mule that’s difficult/dangerous to be shod/trimmed it can be a nightmare to keep a good farrier, definitely something important to mention.
I don't ride much either breed. Been on three or four horses maybe and one mule. a horse's sketchy unpredictable nature, and just the horror stories of horses that have grown up with somebody and still injured them out of fear of their own shadow scares the living shit out of me. Maybe it's just that that was a really good mule, but I didn't feel an ounce of fear riding bareback on that thing
Oh nice! Yeah, I completely agree… a runaway horse is terrifying! Thankfully mules are less likely to do that 😊 Most the time, if a mule gets spooked it won’t lose its mind like a horse.
My first horse was a reject off of a dude ranch. I got him for my birthday as a nine year old girl. That horse knew all the tricks… back to the barn, rub you off on a post or under a tree. Refuse to leave the barn, bloat out his belly while you were cinching so when you got on, the saddle was loose and would slide off sideways… lol! He taught me a ton. I still have a scar from him biting me the first day I had him. In the end, I learned how to be a better horseman and he turned out to be the go to horse anyone could ride. And I’m fond of that scar now. It’s like a little keepsake to remind me of how far we came together ☺️ thank you for watching!
I hope you find one! Just make sure it’s been treated well in the past… all the color in the world, won’t be very enjoyable if they’re hard to get along with 😊 We feel super fortunate to have found our Reata and Josey mules without having to spend a fortune… but if you look long enough, I bet you’ll find a good one too! 😊
Also, try to get a vet to do a pre-purchase exam if possible and refuse to buy from people who dont want you to do that. Will save you a lot of money in the long run to not have a mount with health issues.
I’ve rode horses most my life. I got in to mules a few years ago. Sold every horse I had (except my old paint horse) to buy more mules. I’ll throw rocks at horses while I pass them on my mule. Lol
@@MTN_BUILT Thank you for your response. I agree it is a common phrase. I have volunteered for over 40 years on dog rescue. Many people use it, but it just hurts me to hear it because it makes it seem that the animal is valueless and of throw away status.

I've wanted horses all my life until I was riding a ridge in Red Rock Canyon (near LV) , my horse tripped, and the guide behind me said that's why I ride mules. They don't trip. That would have been good to know before you put me on the giant, ornery beast that didn't want to follow the trail.
😂oh no! Well I’m glad it didn’t fall! We sure like our mules and they do seem more sure footed!
Well He found out your exp . Run̈ny Ridges . Horse that Dont pay attention . Is not good .when you got a 10 or 15 foot drop one one side , let alone a 1000 + drop and the other side damn neart straite up .
Great video! Thanks for all of the info
You bet!!
Mules are fascinating, totally outside of my experience. They are pretty cool.
They are and they are like big dogs ❤️ they LOVE attention ☺️ thanks for watching!
@@MTN_BUILT It’s very obvious they love you too!
Dang I remember when you could get a good Mule starting 400 bucks . To 800 Bucks . I came close to getting one momma was a Apply. Waited to long .
Yeah a super green broke one is now like 3-6k here 😳😳😳
12:11 Holy cow... Nice ride & nice video.. ..🎶Don't know much about biology, 🎶
But, I saw an other YT vid.
That being said, there are a lot of great ranch mules out there… horses and mules just have different strengths and weaknesses, and since we never really need to go fast, mules are perfect for us 😊
Mules are getting more expensive, but a high dollar horse still goes for more than a high dollar mule. The gap is getting tighter though 😊
Okay. Thanks for the answer. And videos.
Well done.. enjoyed it , I give a thumbs up..
Onward and Upward is the Watchword..
Awesome! Thank you so much for the kind words! 😊 Hopefully it will at least help someone a little bit some day 😊
What is confirmation and how dobyoundetermine the mule has it?
Super good question! It’s just how the animal is put together structurally. Honestly, the main things we look for are good straight legs, big bone, and we don’t like petite mules, so we want something with a good amount of size. 😊
Thanks! @@MTN_BUILT
Thanks 😊
Hi I have just started watching your channel, and must complement yous on a really enjoyable watch.
Thank you so much! We’re enjoying the process of learning to make videos, and we really appreciate your words of encouragement 😊 Thank you for watching and taking time to leave a nice comment!
Thanks
You bet! Thank you for watching ☺️
On buying mules and horses
When I was a kid, quite a while ago,
The saying was
All good horses are 10 years old
There’s a lot of wisdom in that 😊
The cafe mule cup you're holding it's not in your product line where'd you get it and do you read a teleprompter when you did this
That cafe mule sticker is just from a cool local coffee company here in Idaho called iron mule coffee. I couldn’t link their products because they’re such a small company, they’re not a sponsor or anything- we just like them 😊
@@MTN_BUILT and Jason did you use a teleprompter thanks kray
Oh I forgot to answer that part! 😊 Nope, but recording would probably go a lot faster if I did have a teleprompter lol 😂
@@MTN_BUILT no I absolutely thought you you were because it was very concise and clear very good and that's impressive is that true of all your videos thanks kray
Incredible video guys.
Thank you! Our hope is that it will be helpful to anyone who might be looking to buy a horse or mule 😊🙏🏼
Have any issues with hooves? I noticed you didn't talk about feet at all.
@@TrentR0123 this is a super good point! Our farrier was hesitant to come out to do trims when we told him we have mules, but now he loves them. 😊
Link to the Shawn Petersen video?
This is from us filming at the sale, it’s not taken from another video. 😊👍🏼
@@MTN_BUILT Dang. That video was so impressive. I looked for it all over the place. That's probably why I can't find it. 😂
Yeah he sure puts a good handle on his mules! We had fun filming all the sale mules and their trainers 😊
Thanks from Chicago
Thank YOU from Idaho 😊
Reata is a wonderful mule.
Thank you! She really is, and we feel super fortunate to have her 😊🙏🏼
I don't ride much either breed.
Outstanding
Thank you!! 😊
Sometimes men amaze me what y’all do with large animals and making things work.
Saludos desde 🇲🇽
Greetings! 😊
nice tips
Thank you! Hopefully they’ll help someone at least just a little 😊
So I bought a mule 3 days ago, guess this is as good a time as any to watch this video.....🤣
Bahaha better late than never 😂 In all seriousness though, congratulations on your new mule- that’s fantastic 😊🙌🏼
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
☺️❤️
My favorite is Kid Broke. More than likely they have developed terrible habits. Generally there a bit hard to onory and don't mind well.
Is it ill advised to only have one, because they have no social life?
Great question! Ideally you’d have a couple, but our neighbor has just one horse, and he seems to be doing great! 😊
I want a flashy mule!
I hope you find one! Just make sure it’s been treated well in the past… all the color in the world, won’t be very enjoyable if they’re hard to get along with 😊
We feel super fortunate to have found our Reata and Josey mules without having to spend a fortune… but if you look long enough, I bet you’ll find a good one too! 😊
Also, try to get a vet to do a pre-purchase exam if possible and refuse to buy from people who dont want you to do that. Will save you a lot of money in the long run to not have a mount with health issues.
Yes! ESPECIALLY if the sellers refuse to let you do a PPE! Huge red flag. Buying an equine is tough! So many dishonest ppl unfortunately 😬
She is gorgeous
My mule cost me big bucks bought at a mule auction. she checked ALL ON my wish list. I had inherited some money so i felt not guilt on what i spent
That’s awesome! I am very glad Quincy worked out and you aren’t one that got bamboozled at an auction! ☺️👍🏼
Josey is amazing looking.
Thank you! She’s such a sweetheart too! ☺️
I have thought about buying a donkey and a horse and breeding my own mule.
Awesome! If you have experience with that I would say go for it ☺️👍🏼
Josey is so pretty
Thank you ☺️
I’ve rode horses most my life. I got in to mules a few years ago. Sold every horse I had (except my old paint horse) to buy more mules. I’ll throw rocks at horses while I pass them on my mule. Lol
Hahaha!! 😂
What’s confirmation?
The build of the horse or mule ☺️👍🏼
My butthole puckered when that guy selling his mule crawled between his back legs! 😳
Anyone who’s been around equines knows how dangerous that was.
Haha mine too! I was thinking, it would be a terrible time for that mule to act outside his normal personality lol 😬
When I win the lottery I'm going to build a 20 mule team and take them to parades all over the nation.
Haha now that would be awesome! We hope you do!! ☺️
Never buy an equine without having your vet check it out first. That will also take care of the ones that have been doped up to calm them.
Yep! ☺️
Those prices mean inflation is real 😂
It’s very real!
Let's see a video of how mules and llamas get along
If we owned some llamas we could do that lol
Ever had a baited Mule?
That is Gaited mule
We haven’t had one, but I’ve heard they’re extremely smooth and comfortable to ride 😊
30k for one mule? Here in Italy experienced and good looking mules cost 3-4k
That’s awesome! I wish it was that way here in the US!
They are highly prized in the usa. Even more in certain states
Never buy a mule named Buck cuz he will.
😂😂
100 dollar mule from sale barn?
Yep if you go through the loose sale. I would be careful buying that kind though.
Yep if you go through the loose sale. I would be careful buying that kind though.
That could be why that mule was nodding its head.
Make sure and get the prospect checked by a veterinarian beforehand. You’ll save yourself a lot of grief.
Such a great point!! Thank you for adding that 😊🙌🏼
Why didn’t you pay more
@@Victorio-f9y for our mules?
Please don’t use the phrase, “get rid of”. Sounds so harsh. Rehome. Sell.
It’s a common phrase. Sorry it offended you ☺️
@@MTN_BUILT Thank you for your response. I agree it is a common phrase. I have volunteered for over 40 years on dog rescue. Many people use it, but it just hurts me to hear it because it makes it seem that the animal is valueless and of throw away status.
Send to the glue factory...
