    Thank you for the information, I bought a mule at auction so meat buyer wouldn’t get her. She s just her...but whenever I’m working she ll stand by fence and nehhh at me, hoofs the fence like she wants to work. 5 years ago the neighbors 3 labs came down and started chasing my steers (6) she jumped cattle fence and ran those 3 dogs off. I named her Matilda, and she ll live here forever

      I share your feelings about mules; my uncles who were born and raised in the Depression always had them about and it was a pleasure hearing the stories they told about the mules.

      @@larryengland7001 Thank you Larry I appreciate it. My uncle had them on their farm as well during that some timeframe. He said as a child, he’d watch the men come in every morning and harness them up for the days work. The barn today still has the cribbing marks where they would chew while standing for long periods waiting while they offloaded them crops. So much history is lost bc there wasn’t cell phones to record it like today. Thx for watching!

    Your mules are gorgeous. I learned a lot about mules from listening to you. Thank you for sharing this good content.
    I first heard of "riding" a mule from a customer ( I was cutting his hair ). He said he goes riding up and down and all through the hills & mountains in SE TN. He was so nice to answer the many many questions I had for him. I could tell this man loved his mules from the way he spoke about them. My curiosity has never ceased since that day about 4 years ago. I remember feeling jealous that I do not have what that man has with these wondrous creatures. ❤️

      Thx Auntie I appreciate it! They are truly incredible and such good therapy to be around. That was back when I first bought the farm and wow the fencing was rough with lots of weeds! I've done a lot of work sense then and they have much more grazing area. I did a video when we rode to bottom of Grand Canyon with them and it was unbelievable. We are going to Sheshone National Forest around Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in July for a week. We will pack in with probably 10 pack mules carrying everything we need for the week. Moving camp every night as we head deeper in and take out on the other side after crossing the mountain ranges and 3 river basins. Should be awesome and will make a great video! Thx for watching, Dave

    Thank you for your very well qualified observations about MULES.
    Most people who train horses only, need to do themselves a favor and take the time to learn about this incredible animal.
    I have trained Lions, Tigers, Jaguars, Elephants , and Chimps in a zoo for reasons of managing them for our safety and medical treatment.
    I found that a mule has the same mindset as a Chimp.
    The main thing I found was patents and respect for the animal goes a long way.

    • @bdradley1
      @bdradley1  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you for your insight I appreciate it. They are incredible animals and truly think through a situation. I have horses as well but the mules can think through a situation and figure it out. I’ll put a bucket of grain in a different paddock and when the mules realize I’m not coming to them they will start navigating their way to me through open fence gates. The horses will continue to get frustrated there is a fence in the way. Have a great week and thanks for watching!

    My wife bought me an older Belgian mule that was skin and bones. I babied her and got her healthy again. And she takes care of me on the trails. Love her! I grew up with horses and had a horrific accident when I was younger (massive head trauma, had to learn to talk and walk) I swore I would never ride again... welp good ole Opal the mule has brought the joy of riding back in my life. (We let her mane grow out and it is thinner but it does lay down on her neck, so maybe she is more horse than donkey in that regard.)

    This answered my question about mule temperament. I hear that mules have bad tempers, but I've often wondered if this comes from people who abuse horses and try that sort of behaviour with a mule. The fight vs flight behaviour you mentioned answered my question. My mum has donkeys and they're very gentle, but I certainly don't think they'd tolerate any mistreatment the way horses do. They won't do anything they don't want to. Once they escaped and I tried to drag them back to their field and they refused to budge. Eventually I had an idea of holding some of the spare electric fence wire between us and cornering them back into their field which worked well.

    This is a wonderful video and so true. We got our first mule just last July. We never had mules but were very familiar with horses since we owned large ponies for years until they died. Anyhow, the best piece of advice I learned is that mules are NOT horses PERIOD!! It has taken some time for our mule Sir Stanley Mulington (he goes by Stanley for short) to trust us. I feel like I'm moving at a snail's pace but it is paying off. Stanley is 13 hands but we are small short people so he's perfect for us. Also he lives with 2 small donkeys and we are the caretakers of all of them. I subbed to you and hope you do more of these. Also, so true about the importance of using a mule saddle and equipment. Thanks!

      Thank you Lisa I appreciate it! I love Sir Stanley’s name. Just hang in there and I promise pretty soon he will be meeting you at the gate and following you like a shadow. I completely understand your snails pace analogy, so true. Thanks for watching and subbing! Dave

      @@bdradley1 Thanks for the quick reply! Stanley and the little donkeys, Hee and Haw, meet me at the gate daily and always have. If I go into the shelter they get nosey and are soon to follow too. I have to say that Stanley has been consistent with that in terms of meeting me. Thanks for the compliment on the name. We named him. He is 5 and they were calling him "Stubby" which I felt wasn't dignified enough for such a fine steed! I make videos just about every day showing them off and the vids are not very long if you get bored and want to check them out! Thanks again and good night!

    Those mules are beautiful. It's evident how well you care for them. I only recently learned about donkeys being used to guard livestock. That was pretty mind blowing. I wonder if there are known sought-after donkey sires for producing mules. Which is to say, the stud fee would be higher than others. Your description of the minds of the mules is insightful. I think I got this video in my feed because I had been watching videos by a man who does videos about mediaeval horsemanship, and he bought a mule (from Spain) to recreate the use of mules. The mule came with the special mule saddle.

      Not in southern TX I don’t. “Dixie Long Ears” is a lady that goes to all of the mule auctions (reputable) and she provides a live feed. Google her or check on UA-cam. Reese Bros in TN is one of the biggest mule suppliers to the industry and they have a yearling sale but think it was last month (?). Cindy livestreams all of their auctions as well. I’m sure there is someone out there but just not sure. Kelso Mules is another good guy. Both Kelso and Reese have websites I think. Most I know are in East. First weekend in April in Colombia TN is “Mule Days” and it is incredible. The entire town shuts down and schools are closed. Lots there for sale. Western Mule Magazine is a good source as well. Facebook groups are Mules World, Ranch Mules, Rockin A Mules, Draft Horses and Mule Farming, Working Mules, Gaited Mules for Gaited Mules, Mule and Horse Talk, Missouri Mules, are just a few groups. You can also breed a horse stallion with a donkey mare,they're more expensive .
    I live in south spain and they are more popular than with an father as a donkey. I have a young Hinny as they're called in English.

      Don’t know of any gaited mules currently. I was in an accident and hard for me to ride so I’m driving more now and have gotten a few drafts for that. My bay was sold to a guy for his 8 yo granddaughter and the red is supposed to be going to Cody Wyoming to an outfitter. You can google “Jake Clark Mule Days”, definitely be some there available as well as Reese Bros Auctions in TN. I think they will have their riding sale in March, Jake Clark is around same time I believe. Hope that helps and thx again!

      If you use a mammoth jack and a nice big draft, you can get close in size to the draft mare. 17.1 hands and 1800 lbs not uncommon. Check out Mule Days in Colombia TN and Bishop CA to see pics of them

    • @bdradley1
      @bdradley1  Рік тому

      I can break it down for you,
      Female horse - mare
      Male horse - stallion if intact and gelding if fixed
      Female donkey - jenny or jennet
      Male donkey - jack or ass (commonly combined for jackass) Jackass can often be one of your co-workers as well!
      Mule comes from a horse mare and a jack donkey
      Hinny comes from a horse stallion and a jenny donkey.
      Hope that helps and thanks for watching, Dave

    hi deb from VT here I am really enjoying your talk about mules . I years back had horses and a Welsh Cob molly she is a character and a half . I loved owning her unfortunately I had to give her up allong with the others due to financial abilities .but she made herself at home with the appy colt that I gave away at a good home ( sold the 3 yr.colt for $300 and the molly decided she wasnt leaving his side so they got two for one deal ). I loved riding her had an austrian saddle britchen ,breastplate,crupperfor her and made a bridle for her . She would always be obstanet when i first got on her and then she would be great . I miss her . couldnt get her to cross a stream unless she wanted too or a open bridge , she would sit like a dog and i would have to drag her ass accross with my pick up until we where two feet on to bridge then she would trot beside the truck . ashe is only 13.2 and is dark chestnut with black mane and tail . story goes that she was result of a show pony getting bred by the donkey down the road that got loose and that as soon as she was born they got rid of her , they didnt want anyone to know that their prize pony had ,had a mule . That come from a vet who took her and raised her to the age of 3 when i got her . at that point she could drive and was riden just a little . well I am going to listen to the part 2 of your story . thank you again sincerely deb
