And wouldn't you know, the largest of them all, the horrid king assassin bug (Psytalla horrida), is unbelievably hardcore. They are not only huge, but they are covered in spikes! So cool! But are they good pets? Is the horrid king assassin bug the best pet insect for you?

    • @chitlitlah
      @chitlitlah Рік тому +7

      It's not something the judge decided arbitrarily; the law has a definition for fish that includes all invertebrates. Sometimes laws provide definitions for clarity or to alter the definition a bit from common language to make the law more sensible, such as excluding motorized wheelchairs from the definition of motor vehicles so you don't have to get them registered, insured, and operate them on the road instead of the sidewalk. I'm not sure if the legislators intended to lump bees in as fish, but it sounds like the outcome was alright.

    As someone whose kept and bred these I would recommend for humidity and temperature at least to keep them between 74-85 and try not to have any huge temp swings and I would keep them on something that doesnt get to dusty if it dries. Mist heavy once a week and second lighter mist when it dried after a few days. This is what worked for me but they are very very tolerant to being completely dry for decent amounts of time.

    Doesn't "/horrida/" relate to its spines? It usually refers to roughness, bristles or spines in systematic nomenclature.

    • @juiceart9199
      @juiceart9199 Рік тому +33

      Horrid is the direct translation, and stems from the Latin "horrere", which meant "to bristle with fear". Horrid having this root has a connection to both bristling and fear, and as such, it is often used to represent spiny, spiked animals or animals with plenty of scary, sharp protrusions!

    The water strider comment got me. I was the type of kid who would collect almost any type of insect (or small animal really) and try to keep it as a pet. However, I was trying to figure out if this grocery store had a pond in the parking lot, if you kept in in an aquarium and brought the aquarium in the car with you, or what.

    Is this a family group? Aw that's sweet, they all look really happy together, it's not like they're running to the furthest point on the log to get away from the big ones! Thank you for specifying a milk cap for a water bowl as what appears shallow to us could look like a lake to insects and small reptiles.
