  • Thanks PJ Nieland for this great gift.
I will NEVER forget your kindness gifting this computer to me.
Today I boot for the 1st time a Speccy 48k Rubber Key Computer.
I also load a Speccy game and play for a little bit.

My heart raced when the screen stayed black 😅when booting but then the ZXHD kicked in… what a relaxing feeling. Have fun with it. P.J.

You look as happy as I did on getting mine in 1982 after my dad (a senior systems engineer at the time) made me learn BASIC and tested me on it before I was allowed one. He did that to encourage me not to just use it for games, so I wrote my own! And thanks to that I wrote code for the HUDs for C-17, F-5 and Eurofighter Typhoon, F-16 HUDWAC and the fly-by-wire FCC for the Boeing 777. As they say, "From little acorns..." although I never had an Atom, Electron, BBC Micro or Archimedes - just my humble rubbery little black slab 😊

Don't ignore the maintenance on this old machine: replacing the caps, the voltage regulator, heatsink on ULA, video mod and replace the keyboard membrane with a 48-KLDX micro switches membrane.

Sound is usually louder than that. There might be a faulty transistor or diode.

Quick European voltage infodump for you TJ, as you are getting it wrong. So, this is very basic, but in Europe there were 2 popular mains voltage groups. Some countries had 240v like the UK. Some others had 220v. So, depending where in Europe your retro gadget was originally sold, you would have a 240v or 220v PSU. For UK Speccys this will be 240v. Since we all became EU (and before that Brexit nonsense, which has changed nothing on this score), it was decided we would all shift our standards to 230v. This was because for old equipment, 230v was in the required tolerance range for both. So the switch was seamless. All new stuff, and for some time now actually, is designed for 230v. What non-European types need to know, is they should just set their converters to 230v for all European retro and modern electronics. It'll just work. You should not, though, be feeding 220v to an old 240v device or 240v to an old 220v device. Just use 230v like we do over here and you'll be good.

Actually many of those old 220V equipment are capable to handle the “new” 230V standard (which is often closer to 240V in reality depending on how far do you live from the transformer station).

@@gabor222Yep, that's what I'm saying. 230v is in the tolerance range for both old 220v devices and 240v devices. This is why none of us noticed when we all switched to 230v unless we were nerds. So you just go with 230v for everything and you're good.
