Madonna has a fabulous voice. Very distinctive, immediately recognisable. It is not a perfect "big" voice but it has other qualities. Women always get judged on their vocal abilities. Something that rarely ever happens to men. When did Neil Young ever sing in key and who cares? Rock stars couldn't hope to nail half the shit Madonna has tackled. But people need quantifiables when making judgements. If it can't be measured they have no confidence in their own experience of an artistic endeavour.
She is a contralto...Like Cher and others..It is the most common range for women..And I know what you mean by distinctive..Simply wonderful..I far I am concerned, anyone who sings one of her songs is committing an unforgivable sin.

Madonna's fame relies on fashion, music videos with tongue and cheek messages and of course her poppy attitude. She didn't really have to 'work' in a way. She thrills an audience visually, but not spiritually or harmoniously.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE her, I can't stress that enough. But if you're going to study pop music, it is almost mandatory to study these three in this order
