9 years later and I found your video still. By far the most explanatory, easy to understand, and hands down the most helpful video series for beginners there is. Thank you so so much Drustew. I’d love to learn from you in person if ever given the opportunity.
Softer ropes are less forgiving when it comes to roping horns. A stiffer rope stays open and makes it a little easier to rope big horns BUT your skill level needs to be higher to handle a stiffer rope. Pros use anything from a super soft to medium soft head rope depending on their personal likes. Super soft and extra soft are going to be the most used in the market today. Practice with and use nothing harder than an extra soft so you can learn to feel your tip and lean to catch correctly. You can't cheat with a soft rope.
So I bought my boys ropes. They are just beginner lariat kids ropes but they came in a small, small coil and it’s hard to get them trow out. Do they just need to be stretched out?
I bought a used soft rope. I am actually finally getting the hang of it from your videos. I roped my first chair today and it felt good. I'm just a beginner but your videos are really educational. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I never would of known how tough it is to rope. It sure is fun. Thanks again!!!!!
Thanks for demystifying the rope types, I end up teaching lots of kids to rope, and this will help things work out better for them. A chicken rope seems to do well for the little ones...
Thanks. I am a beginner. I will take your suggestion and look for XXS or XS lay. Should I get nylon or poly? I have a nice old rawhide riata. It is about 56 feet long or so. It is a pain to coil. But I am still learning, so it is just me.
Hey there Drew! Great video's! I cant seem to find the one that tells you how to feed your loop. Also im left handed...could u give me some ideas on ropes? Like what I mean is does the rope lay on the other side of the honda not or no? And is there ropes out there for lefties? Do I need to recoil my rope differently? Or....what? Just the general basics is what I want to know if u could help...would be very pleased! Thanks!
I wish they wouldn’t tell you to make the videos shorter. Sure if you want more views shorter videos will probably help but if you want your videos to be effective for the people who actually care and subscribe JUST MAKE THE VIDEO AS LONG AS IT NEEDS TO BE. If someone gets bored they can watch the video in whatever time they want. They can stop start watch later whatever they want. Make videos that really teach people something. Who cares about the time. If it’s a good video that’s what matters. People are craving long form content.
Works for microphone and guitar cables, as well. You can also do an inside/outside (over/under) alternate that works well. And lay off them taters and bread and rice and sweet feed, son, and you will trim rite down! Oh yeh, no more sweet tea! What??!? How cruel is this world, anyway??

I learned to rope while working with the Okanagan Indians in south BC, back in 1979. Exactly as I learned.
Thanks for this. Bought a rope on a whim deciding I’d learn to lasso.
Great video
Thanks for hoping me get back into learning how to lasso. I used to take lessons but had to stop. So my lasso was put up for over a year.
Literally have watched this every year since it came out. Still helps me. Thank you sir. Legend status
