I’m a fully grown man and my parents still aren’t past the “don’t look directly in the eyes of your next door neighbors” phase. Naturally, unlike Britney Spears I don’t have to do everything they say as an independent adult that pays for his own taxes, but the helicopter parenting I get when I call them is still irritating.

My parents took my online friends away from me and never let me talked to them ever. They were one of my only source of happiness. When they did that I was heartbroken. There's a story behind my Internet friendship: so. I was playing minecraft, and I was playing some kind of skywars style game on a server. I kept saying hi to everyone I played a match with (I chose 1v1 mode) in hopes of finding a new friend, but no one said hi back until... I had just joined a new match, and was starting typing in the chat, when, guess what, I was beaten to it! They actually said hi first! And we've been friends ever since❤😅😊😊🥰

I’m glad that my parents aren’t too overprotective and worried about me making friends online, and that I’m well aware of the dangers, but might just be because I’m shy anywhere, except here.
This is true... I also have problems finding friends in real life, and I wouldn't even imagine what I would do without the Internet
The problem of parents being so sceptical about "internet friends" is that the media is telling them all the bad information and never telling the good (cause horrible things = views go stonks), which means parents only think about internet as a place with all the bad things the media told them. Same with for example flights (if they tell you how much planes crash every month and how tragic it is, but they don't tell you the % that it could be you in that plane)

I've never actually talked to anyone in the internet, like, directly.
My parents were always really protective towards me, and of course, I understand why.
But then came a game in Roblox called Warrior Cats: Ultimate Edition (Warrior Cats is a book saga).
It's a roleplay game, so playing without being able to talk or interact with the other players... didn't really work for either sides.
I had been asking my parents a lot to be allowed to talk in chat, because without talking, I wouldn't be able to play the game and have fun with it...
AND SOMEHOW I MANAGED TO CONVINCE THEM TO LET ME USE CHAT.
Of course, they told me to be carefull, to never share personal information online and if I ever saw a weirdo, I had to block them, report them, and leave the server to go roleplay somewhere else.
And since then, I've been using my book-writting skills to roleplay as a wild cat living in a (honestly) completely disfunctional society often leading this very same wild cat and everybody else in it's group to end up in war with the other groups.

When you have niche interests like mine online friends are typically the best way to go. It's easier to find the type of people you want to meet or be friends with, and people who are like you.
That's the benefit of online friends. Of course there are risks too but there are risks with having friends IRL too. Online it's just easier to find "your type".

I used to have many online friends because of COVID but I felt like I was annoying them.. they never wanted to speak to me and got mad when I used to joke around.. so I just ghosted all them..
I have a friend online I have known for almost 7 or 8 years now. I disappeared and didnt talk to them for like 2 years but we are good friends because it didnt affect anything. We are actually the closest friends to each other and because we know each other online only we tell each other everything even things irl friends dont know because it's too personal, online friends can be close friends and closer than irl friends sometimes.

I met someone great in 2017 who stopped responding in 2019. So I got scared because he just wouldnt ever answer and was marked as offline.

I had once an Internet Friend in Minecraft. We always played and were Best Friend and than, he deleted Minecraft. I miss him very much because he was one of my first friends, most of the People I met didnt like me because I had the Steve skin. He was between my Closest Friends the one that keeped everything together, Because he was one of the Oldest and calmest.

I started playing Team Fortress 2 back then, I think I also made my steam account back then, and started my Roblox account. I also bought my own version of Minecraft, my mom had hers, which me and my brother used before this, and I got tired of not having my own username. Good year to be honest
I tried to get online friends in an anime forum once when I was 15 years old and there was this dude who was 10 years older than me. First we talked about anime n stuff but later he startet to flirt with me. A few hours more of chatting he said he wanted to marry me and move to my country. After this chat I logged out and never have logged in again. That was the first and last time I tried to find friends online, this experience had freaked me out so hard.
