Hi "the voice of Paul". I always look forward to your updates and videos on Sydney transport. You also get to places I sometimes miss the opportunity to get to, so I really appreciate your deep dive (pun intended) into our amazing Metro projects. Thanks mate!
A very minor correction. At 1:05 it was mentioned that TBM Jesse was westbound towards Hunter Street. It’s obviously headed eastbound. But as usual, what an incredible tour and explainer of how the project is progressing. Thanks so much Paul. Watching from California.
Thank you Paul, for educating us lay-people. I like that you explained each step without assuming everyone already knows (like the other transport UA-camrs do as if it was some secrete society that we first have to be initiated into). Always appreciate your thorough commentary :)
Well done Paul! I think you'll find the large duct with the flexible join is part of the ventilation and/or dust control, with the water pipes on the other side of the TBM. You can see a blue valve at the top left of screen. Cheers
It is truly amazing how much the science and mechanics of tunneling has advanced in the last 60 years or so since the very first bored rail tunnels were built in Sydney (the Eastern Suburbs Railway). One can only wonder how much more tunneled rail we might have built in Sydney over that time if tunneling had been as effective and efficient as it is now with the modern operation, they really have just smashed out all of these tunnels in the last 2-3 decades or so with very little fuss, and they are planning more. Having said that, I do think we should be trying to incorperate more elevated viaduct rail where it is practical, like say down Anzac Parade if the Metro West ever makes it that far (though they could do cut & cover), or out through Prairiewood SW of Westmead, or even possibly on a future Liverpool extension of the Bankstown Metro.
Yes, elevated sections are much cheaper to build. It's just hard to do in heavily built up areas. I reckon any extensions west beyond Westmead or Bankstown would have some above ground sections
HI Paul, interesting seeing the progress at The Bays Station. I am in two minds about this line. It will be great when it opens, but a bit on the down side, I will be 80 years old that year. Incidentally, they plan to start drilling tunnels on our Suburban Rail Link (SRL) here next year. Interesting seeing the small tour train around The Bays work site. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
I think there was a minor mistake at 1:05 when it was mentioned that TBM Jesse was “westbound” towards Hunter Street. I believe it’s actually eastbound.
2032 seems like a lifetime away...I mean 8 yrs ago was 2016 and that felt tike a lifetime ago looking back on it. I wonder if they will use a more advanced TBM in a couple years time.
Just different projects. The st Marys line may be extended to Marsden Park Schofield's and Tallawong (though will be a different train type and electrical system). This system maybe a third system unrelated to either the airport or existing line. And keep in mind this is not unusual. Every city from London to Tokyo has numerous incompatible systems
@hotmarkb the airport is not for Sydney. That should be self evident. There is no reason for a resident of the cbd, eastern suburbs north shore St George etc to go there. None. There won't be any flights you couldn't also get at mascot. But for people in Penrith and around the new line will be good, and a future new line in Campbelltown also will help.
@@radicallyrethinkingrailwaysina I agree for Australian residents, but a large number will be international tourists, and they don’t come to Sydney to see Western Sydney. They won’t know not to fly into this airport.
The sale of Rosehill will depend on a vote of the Australian Turf Club (ATC) members. Not everyone is happy about the way it has been handled, so I'm not too sure that it will go ahead. We will see. And no decision has been made yet to add any other stations, or at least, they haven't made an announcement about it.
Sadly, its looking more and more unlikely as time goes by. The TBMs are now tunnelling from Clyde to Westmead, and although stations can be added after the tunnelling has taken place, it will be harder to do.
He he! Another term used in tunnelling is "penetration", but I decided to save that for another video! - I think it gets a mention in the Herrenknecht video.
I don’t get how this entire project will take 8 years to build if they started today then maybe so but they’re already tunnelling on this project I just don’t understand
The new government basically paused everything to do a (largely politically motivated) “review”. Which just told them what anyone with half a brain cell already knew - Metro West is a no-brainer for Sydney and was contractually far too advanced to cancel anyway. Net result was wasting hundreds of millions of dollars (while they paid all the existing staff & contractors to basically spin their wheels) and a big delay in getting contracts in place for later stages like station fit outs etc - hence the 2 year timeline blowout. Not to mention what’s looking like may all fall through - the Rosehill racecourse redevelopment and additional station. The government will no doubt try to pretend they have somehow “rescued” the project - but that’s actually a total lie.

Awesome rundown. Thanks Paul 🙏

Thanks for that Jim.
Another qreat video Paul. You captured the design intent perfectly
0:20 That power station building looks perfect for urban photography of abandoned buildings

I’ll be 86. But it’ll be worth the wait.

haha love it "Spoiler Alert" as always great video and loved hearing about what the slurry is and how its made, used in the process of tunnelling.
Glad you liked that bit!
Great stuff. This station will be a major make or break for the line... will it improve access to Balmain and Vic Road corridor or😊 just cruise past.
Cross River Rail projects are taking shape across South-East Queensland, Paul.
Yes I'd love to do more CRR videos, but just don't have the time and resources to do that right now.
@ Fair enough. The updates are helpful.

I don’t understand why this line isn’t directly built to the new western Sydney airport. Does anyone know??

@@radicallyrethinkingrailwaysina those are headed North and south from the airport, when the city is East!

Because sooner or later they will realise that extending the train from Leppington would be a much better idea.
It's frustrating watching all this duplication and disconnected lines.
One day:
Tallawong - Schofields
Carlingford - Epping
Hurstville - Strathfield
Are Rosehill and/or Silverwater Metro stops still proposed to be added?

When’s the Orchard hills gonna be released 😊
Hopefully in Jan or Feb. I'm planning to include it as part of a wider Airport Metro video.
Congratulations on saving “erector” so many times with not even a hint of a giggle

Isn’t it a trolly if it’s not on rails ?
They were just showing stock footage. You are correct in that Sydney Metro uses a wheeled vehicle to move tunnel segments into place
Thanks for clarifying that Peter.

Somebody has to say. This is a very boring video.
Yep, its going to be a long and boring time for TMB Ruby!
