One little addition to #3: of course it can sometimes sound good and make transitions sound nice and fluent. But very often it sounds just bad. It's more about the 'messy and accentuated' combined with open strings. Not just the open strings themselves.
See point 5.1, do you notice I'm keeping it clean? All I'm saying is be careful not to smack it into everything, because it's difficult to get it out of your system :)

I was going to take issue with #3 - I think it can be used very effectively especially when playing out of G since the open strings (selectively of course) are in the right key. I believe John Lennon did this extensively. So your redeeming comment her is much appreciated.
I also would suggest a few other techniques that I have found work to improve on basic strumming.
      1. Play an arpeggio for dramatic effect instead of the usual strum pattern - this works for example when the melody goes for the "hook" note(s).
      2. The sound of silence! Carefully placed breaks in the strumming can highlight a piece - it also shows the audience that the guitarist is accompanying the singer or lead instrument and not just banging away!
3.Runs and fills. Depending on the genre of music you are playing (particularly Bluegrass, Old Time Fiddle music etc.) the use of runs and fills can help to make the music sound more articulate. They should be used sparingly though - bluegrassers who has perfected their G run, please note!

I mean there’s still a little bit of the “openness” in the transitions. No one can change between chords immediately and perfectly without some of that. I think the main point is to not emphasize those transitions to the point where they stand out. It’s definitely not as discernible when you try to make your changes fast and smooth, but if you listen hard enough, I’m sure you’ll here a little bit of it regardless

    Dear Paul,
I was running restless, searching for that perfect tune, trying to reach it by half structured hours of playing, yet patiently waiting for the day it would finally emerge ...
perfect, just complete. No side buzz, no vibration, just one clean strum, and a couple of perfectly played single notes to accompany it.
After watching this video of yours I finally understood: What is essential for food should also find appliance with our guitar, we need to show it love and appreciation, warmth and a tender feeling of gratefulness. Then it will give you this gratitude of a complete sound.
You are such a sympathetic warmhearted guitar philosopher, had I the funds, I would inscribe into you acoustic course today.
But since I am a bit limited in that direction I will use your lessons and pair those with mine, use my creativity and find a perfect way to structurize about two hours every day into finding that completion in my tune like you seem to have found.
All the best, and best regards,
    Marc
Ps: It also allows me to feel a very peculiar kind of gratitude finally knowing that you are from the Netherlands, and that it was a Dutch accent I was hearing all along, rather than a Scandinavian.

I just played my grand jumbo bodied acoustic on my terrance for 2 hours. Just because summer is finally coming to Finland and what else you can do when the sun sets. I played all kinds of songs, as hard as I could. Just playing the guitar for birds or something. Then my neighbor walked by with her two dogs and shouted "I've been singing along in my yard all the time!" Acoustic guitar is life.

Great video and great advice! I wish I'd seen this in the 1960s when I was learning guitar, it would have improved my playing more quickly. I had to work all that out myself over the years.
When I'm teaching I also point out that you can create a nice percussive groove by lifting your left hand fingers slightly to mute the strings and strumming the strings once. It gives a percussive sound. Letting the strings ring on between strums can ruin the groove.

i was confident in my acoustic playing till now, but turns out I'm just a frog in the well... every single tip is such an awesome way to improve the technique and playing that I cant thank you enough , although a part of me wants you to teach the way to upgrade the playing in a detailed way, im happy with these instructions as I could explore on my own and maybe I could find the style that's fitting for me... sir, thanks a lot for this!

Totally agree with #3. only use those open transitioning strums if the chord G is a "transitioning" chord!
If you're good, you'll finger an actual chord for the transitions instead of just strumming open strings. Then you have even less time and have to move twice as fast-- which is what makes you good!

When I look at your videos over the years I can see how smooth your videos have become, what "effects" and camera angles, lighting and mic setup you use now and how you structure the lesson content and pace. And it seems you like what you are doing and I hope it pays well. I can spend whole evenings going through your videos, guitar in hand, skipping at times because its too high a level.

I think that is why he titles that point "why are you even doing this?" -- you should do it for a reason, not because it is the only way you can play. It of course has a musical purpose (I' like the sound myself) but he's right that beginners (like me) do use it as a crutch to sound good quickly without advancing chord-changing skill. I guess a good test of whether a person is using it musically or out of laziness to to make sure you can play it both with and without the transition strum.

Am I the only one who noticed you filled your tip #3 from 4:35 to 5:47 with a bunch of crappy transitions, just to make the point? Or are we so used to badly edited UA-cam videos (just like music with these bad chord transitions) that we don't even notice anymore when what you've done is, in fact, clever, subtle, and brilliant? Anyway, I'm so glad I've found your channel. I've watched a lot of guitar videos on UA-cam and yours are easily my favourite. Clear. Informative. Helpful. Thanks for your hard work, both in the guitar, and the video production.
