In this video I'm sharing my biggest regrets concerning learning the guitar. Things I wish I would've done more, or less of. I hope these tips will help you make better decisions now, so you won't feel sorry later ;)

The first one is so true. I was in a school talent show and played one by Metallica. I got some applause but I'm pretty sure most of em couldn't process what I just played. My friend played guitar for a month. He played Wonderwall and sang and got a standing ovation.

This helps you remember what music is all about. It's not about the technical skill, it's about the emotional response. Some of the simplest songs can evoke the biggest emotional response.

Piano is very important in understanding theory. Most music schools say you must learn 2 instruments and one of them is piano !!
@446595252e It's better to learn piano, but it isn't like a necessity. It just makes it easier to understand theory with the way it is layed out.
@446595252e I remember an interview with Miles Davis in which he described a conversation with Dizzy Gillespie. Of course, Davis and Gillespie both played the trumpet. Davis was describing his current effort to compose a piece and his struggle to get down what he heard in his head. Gillespie said, 'Work it out on piano.' Davis confessed that he didn't play piano. Gillespie advised him to learn, that the piano allowed him to work out both the melody and bass lines and the interplay between them, which then allowed him to write the parts of the rest of the band. One master trumpet player/composer advising another master trumpet player/composer to take up the piano ... mid-career. :)
@446595252e Nah. I began learning piano after playing guitar for 2 years. I recognized the benefits of piano almost instantly. Understanding musical concepts and theory in general is SO MUCH EASIER. It's almost confusing when you see it. Also, piano forces you to train controlling both of your hand individually, which is an useful skill when picking fast or strumming complicated patterns.
If I may add, since some people do this: dont rely on "safe" songs, actually, try to play them as little as possible. Lets say you just started out, you learned something easy, and now that you can play something you enjoy playing the guitar, you spend days playing the same song over and over again, but what you should do instead is learn another song, dont really master it, cause once you learn more and more songs (but do practice older ones to not forget them from time to time) you get more used to the guitar and it feels more natural, so you'll notice that when you go back to those songs youre gonna play them better than before. The only way to get better is to keep learning, and you wont learn much from playing the same songs over and over again, find something new, find something challenging, and just keep practicing.
I'm new on guitar but don't have that time myself as a parent and working hours, so I focus on learning something different every week and kinda noving to another thing the next week, sometimes going back to check progress on learned stuff. It is really great when you play something you didn't for 2 weeks and still you do better than before.
I couldn't stop myself learning new songs. It's really good for improving, I could play the my generation bass solo in 4 months
looking to start out and i think this is good advice to go with tbh
I tried to learn playing chords but my hands were way too bad to play pretty much anything I could find so I went to learn some *relatively* easy riffs and in the last few weeks I did learn quite a few, when I memorize, not even get decent at playing one I go to learn another, and then have a session of playing random riffs that I learned focusing on the ones I'm the worst at. One of the first ones and I have no idea why but I just can't seem to ever play right because of 1 fast transition is the main theme of Surrender by Billy talent

Things I regret not doing while learning guitar :
1) Practicing enough.
2) Enough Practice.

This motivated me in a weird way.. He didn’t do these 8 things for like his first 5 years of playing and still managed to become the guitar player he is. Just shows how capable you can be with passion in the driver seat.

I’ve always loved the guitar, but when I learned how to play piano, I realized true appreciation for those 6 strings. It just connected something for me, and added a depth I can’t really even describe.
I’m so glad my parents gave me piano lessons when I was younger. Gave me a connection to the guitar I didn’t fully appreciate until now.

One of the best things I did early on was to just turn the radio on and jam. Try to pick out the key and chords before the song is over.
That is a skill I'm very happy to have.
Playing to the radio and to my older brother's stack of vinyl albums was my education. It helped me develop a good ear before my peers did. But I do wish I had worked harder at the schooling side of it. There's something to be said for being properly schooled in how to play your instrument. It gives you a "higher ceiling," if you will. I also never learned how to sight-read music, which limits my opportunities for gigs.

i really started trying to learn theory after years of playing guitar and man i feel like my understanding skyrocketed when i got a keyboard
it makes so much more sense and is easier to make chords and everything. my ear got a lot better, my timing, rhythm, understanding etc
Number 5 is spot on!! They definitely have some connections, and while you learn the piano, it helps in understanding music theory and reading sheet music.

@@omgbence676 That however dowsnt mwan you cant br a good songwriter. You dont need more than open chords to write a song, as long as you have good melodies. I never use most open chords outside of E and Em, and then G/Gmaj7, and maybe Em9, but not using open chords doesnt make one a good song writer, Bob Dylan would write using mainly open chords all the friggin time and he is a songwriting genius, heralded by basically every artist under the sun

Glad I did all these things when I started learning. All my friends thought it was dumb and tried to give me advice. I took advice from interviews of musicians I admired and how they learned. Weird how I progressed, while they all ended up plateauing early.
That is true. Since I learn piano. It help me learn and understand the guitar better and more efficiently.

You just gave me a hole new approach to pick up my guitar and start playing / practiceing again. I've been stuck for almost 4 years, not really feeling motivated to practice or other things related to guitar. But these ideas of studying music ect. listening to it, to not only learn stuff from tabs and to not use the metronome sololy as a speed tool. Thank you! I actually feel a little bit of motivation. I hope it grows!
Yet more superb and free advice I only wish we had back in the early 90's when, for me at least, recording various radio channels to cassette was my learning aid. Not easy learning by ear when the playback pitch was somewhere between keys and each mistake meant waiting a lifetime to rewind and try again. Personally, I can't see why anyone can fault (or thumbs down) the advice Paul is offering here.

Yes; you can see how chords are built, for example, and "build your own" in whatever formula you want, visually. Not so easy on a guitar.
Yeah, I started on piano. I've always joked that music theory is right there on the white and the black keys. Been playing guitar for years and I still sometimes close my eyes to envision how something works on the keyboard to provide extra insight.
How long did you play it for to get an understanding?

Pianist of 7 years here, last week I picked up a guitar (old, nearly broken down beater) to learn. I cannot agree more with point number 5. Everything is SO much clearer when you can transfer your knowledge from the piano. I can play a few chords and one riff so far. Gonna take your advice and learn some classics too. Great video, thanks for the tips.

Using tabs to help illustrate a new technique is different than relying on tabs to learn every piece of music you know lol
He means not to use them as a crutch. Obviously you can still use them.

Learned everything on guitar (when I was starting out) by ear and playing along to my favourite albums.
I still suck, but at least I'm not beholden to the dreaded TAB.
I guess my only major regret is never learning to use my fourth (pinky) finger. Can use it a little but, unfortunately, age and arthritis means that I will always be a "tri-digital" player, at least as far as lead is concerned.
Play piano, drums, even a bass (heck, play a damn recorder) - anything other than a 6-string guitar - and, even if you don't become a great player, it will change your brain and how you think about music.
It's not a competitive sport. It's an Art. Reading Heidegger made me a better player. Srsly. Heidegger. I didn't understand half of it, but the parts that stuck really made a difference.
Paul Davids you are such a great teacher. Finding a person who suits you to learn from is so important. After watching a lot of different teachers i find Paul so easy to listern to i cant seem to learn from others as well this guy, thanks for your videos

Marek Kuzel Not learning some basic piano when learning ANY other instrument is a huge mistake. I have huge respect for this guy for mentioning the piano to learn about music theory. And besides, you may find out how easy it is to learn how to play the piano.

Step 1: Learn piano

My parents pushed piano on me for 6yrs when I was a kid, said I'd thank them later. Neither of them play guitar, but boy were they right. 20yrs on, I can't play a lick on piano but still visualise all my guitar theory on piano, I'd be totally lost without that foundation and would have likely gave up guitar long ago.

I have played the piano for a year now and it is very easy if you come from piano and then to guitar. The fact is true!
I learned the piano before I started to learn the guitar. I can 100% confirm that it helps. You'll learn twice as fast.
No1 yes. I did the technical stuff but learning the classics will make learning songs easier and quicker in the future. My regret as well.

I read about Solfege once but I kinda shrugged it off. However, hearing you explain how it helps really made it click for some odd reason.

I have heard this many times, but I'm always so confused on how to even learn to play by ear. Can you make a video on how to train the ear ? that would actually be amazing
Im know expert as i just started practicing but the tip practice singing might help. If you can match a hum to a note on the guitar and somewhat memorize it. It can help when trying to learn by ear
first:learn the circle of fiths. check it out and get what the point of it is. as soon as u get it, u will see it's easy to know the chords from a song, cuz everything is based on a scale and the circle of fiths.
Its all made to give u a feeling of a degree where u need to go after playing a C to D. in this example its mostly the feeling of resolution from C to D to G.
the IV V I progression.
learn chords progressions. there are hundreds of them but u should know the main progressions. just google them. for jazz its II V I or in pop I IV V and so on.
check out rick beatos videos for it, u got a lot of good content for it to get at least a bit of knowledge for it.
second:learn ur scales. learn how to play the major scale and minor scale and the pentatonic scale. as soon as u have that vertically and horizontaly figured out and got ur feelings for it, u can figure the melody out by ear, cuz u got ur structure or lets say, ur path u have to follow, cuz thats where it all comes from.
when u did that, learn across the neck all the arpeggios possibly. when u play guitar, its pretty easy, cuz u will see its most of the time the Dm, Am, Gm as a barre chord and also a a C minor chords which cant be played in the first position, because of the Db, u can just play it in the 12th position but also kinda weird. anyways, after u learnt that, u can go on and learn how to creat chords with more tones, like a C#11b5 or what ever. u can maybe find a picture of all the names and way of use for those names in a book or on google.
and when u did that, u can try to learn the functionality of those chords in a more direct way. what are sus4 and sus2 chords for and what are diminished chords for. what makes the difference between a Cadd9 and a normal C major and more stuff.
third:find ur own musical genre where u want to be good at or find ur idol and try to pick some licks from him that u really like and learn them in every scale u know.
e.g. the lick is played in a C-minor scale then u have to learn to transcribe it into C-Harmonic Minor or into Jazzminor or what ever scale u know and want to learn more from.
a good app to see how many scales acctually exist and to train ur ear with ear training, use the app "perfect ear".
to learn the feeling of a degree from a scale, u have to download "functional ear trainer". u will get that all soon and ofc it all takes time and pratice but u will get there and maybe u will go to study music also. its all about the motivation.

Can't agree more about jamming. You learn so much that way. And think about it, there's a special word for playing with yourself, and although everybody does sometimes, it's always better with a friend or six!

Regardless of the kind of click-bait title, this video's advice is spot-on. I have the exact same regrets from when I was first learning to play guitar (some of them I still need to fix!).

This video was so helpful! Something I struggle with is devoting time just to learn guitar, but learning classics and popular songs in general is fun and I learn a lot whilst doing so!
Great video.. I was not sure what to expect when I opened this. But its very useful information and I'm happy that I'm already doing some of these things and it's raised my awareness of things that I should be doing!
I'm a new guitar player (only 7months ish) and I think I do almost all of these things that you regret, guess I have a lot to consider and change up haha
I want to add a #9 here that has helped me enormously:
Practice everything you can acoustically. Plugging in just so you can hear is fine, but stay away from effects and distortion.
It's a lot harder, but your playing will be so much cleaner.
This is so true. I believe most guitarists would benefit from never useful effect pedals until they've been playing for at least a couple of years.
Unless your trying to learn palm muting, legato, or anything else that has to do with electric guitar.

Gabe Isenor no but completely different from acoustic muting. They are 2 different instruments. As someone who played acoustic for 10 years before they ever picked up an electric guitar I think I am speaking from experience here.
I absolutely second this. But just don't play electric guitar unplugged as it you're playing an acoustic; I did that during my first few weeks and it was an error, man when I finally plugged in I was surprised by the amount of unwanted noise, the
excessive amount of both fretting and strumming force and not learning how to mute!. Always play plugged but just have the cleanest sound you can get, just with and amp and nothing else and with zero effects and distortions, at least for a few months.

No 5 is so true. I was offered piano lessons as a kid, but turned it down and self-taught myself guitar. If I'd taken piano I'd be able to sight-read now.

Old school everything was learned by ear and picking up moving needle back and forth on the lp’s . Tab did not exist and nobody read staff music....nobody. Listening to the Allman bros at Filmore east a few thousand times was the best way.
Yup.
I only knew piano, and learning the guitar is the most effective music-thoery learning I have done. So it works both ways.
I like this guy. I will be paying for his online lesson library when I can , 20 years of self learning apart from some lessons early on , and wasted chance to learn properly. Paul David’s makes me want to learn properly.
