- Counting down through my top 10 favorite PC games from the 1990s and playing them on original hardware. Although a few major titles are on this list, I tried to go for a few lesser known ones as well.
Timecodes
0:00 - Intro
0:59 - Heretic (94)
1:37 - Blood (97)
2:24 - Shadow Warrior (97)
3:09 - Tie Fighter (94)
4:01 - Strife (96)
5:06 - Command & Conquer Red Alert (96)
6:03 - Full Throttle (95)
7:24 - Diablo (97) & Diablo II (2000)
8:18 - Duke Nukem 3D (96)
10:28 - Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis (92) - Наука та технологія
Very different from the games i've played on PC back then. Thinking about it, probably these ten games i've played the most in the 1990's, in no particular order:
Aliens versus Predator
Baldur's Gate
Colin McRae Rally
MDK
Planescape: Torment
Quake
Terminal Velocity
Total Annihilation
Unreal Tournament
Wing Commander V: Prophecy
Great list that I would expand with: Crusader No Remorse, Dune 2 and Dune 2000, Earthsiege 2, Wing Commander 3+4 and Privateer 2 - The Darkening!
I haven't played most of those, I'll have to check them out. Thanks!
Definitely Earthsiege 2. I also liked Starsiege. The best rivals to Mechwarrior games.
That Diablo clip took me right back, great game & soundtrack
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
Great video. I hope to see your channel grow.
That whole PC setup looks so clean and unyellowed. That's really nice to see. It almost looks like new old stock. And that pre-wheel Microsoft mouse brings back some memories. ☺
Thank you so much Richard! I really appreciate the kind words. Am having tons of fun with this channel.
good list. Blood scratched the itch for violence in a way that FPS games hadn't seen rise of the triad. And the thing that was coolest to little me -- and now adult me -- was how much of the gore and exploded body parts stuck around the map. It was very satisfying, a little detail that makes a big difference that few games ever bothered to include.
"ludicrous gibs" as it was called in ROTT. Tom Hall came up with a lot of that humor in ROTT and I think it inspired the creators of Blood a lot.
"Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, whoa, I think my dinghy hanging out." -- Wang
"Who wanta some Wang?"
My favorite is first Commandos from 98. Really amazing. I love Captain Claw also. That was an amazing adventure-and still is...
Commandos is such a great game! Thanks
So many hours, so many memories...
An enjoyable video. TIE Fighter is probably my pick from that list. Phenomenal game
I played it for a few hours just last night! Such a great game.
Captivated by your office there! If you ever want to film a small tour, that would be great. Always interesting to see how people decide to store and showcase multiple PC systems.
Thanks, you'll probably like the tour video I made of my retrocomputer repair lab: ua-cam.com/video/GZOV34vbsZs/v-deo.html
I would include Quake, Day of the Tentacle and Ultima Underworld 1 & 2
DOTT is such a great game! I got the remastered version on Steam a while back, I have got to play through it, haven't played it since the original.
So many of my favorites would be point and click adventure games. Secret of Monkey Island.
Monkey Island 2:LeChuck's Revenge.
Full Throttle.
Day of the Tentacle.
Space Quest series.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
Beneath A Steel Sky.
Gabriel Knight:Sins of the Fathers.
Sam & Max: Hit the Road.
Broken Sword series.
Discworld 1 and 2.
Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2.
Great games@@TidanLikida! I should make a top 10 point and click adventure video...
what a great list. most of the games i totally agree with. Especially number 1 :)
Thank you!
day of the tentacle is amaziong
Heck yeah! I loved that game when it came out. LucasArts was such a phenomenal company that produced so many great games.
Just a little side note about what you said about Full Throttle. There were plans for a sequel, and a teaser video was shown of it at E3 (I think 2003.) Sadly it never came out. Shame. Such a good game.
Also glad to see the Build Engine getting love to this day as it was most recently used in the 2019 game Ion Fury as well as its DLC expansion Aftershock.
Awesome, yeah I heard a lot of great games were permanently shelved when Lucas started to shut down, so sad! Disney of course destroyed it once and for all when they acquired all the IP.
I loved Raptor, the first GTA and Cavemen. Oh and Wings of Fury, not sure if that was 90s already.
I'll have to check them out, other than GTA I haven't played those! Thanks
Wow, that PC looks like it's new out of the box!
One of my favorites in the 90s was the first Age of Empires.
Great game! I still play it
If you ain't played Baldur's gate 1 & 2, give em a shout, they'd have made my list for sure.
Great games! I somehow missed those in the 90s and only played them in recent years.
Great video man!
Thanks!
Great list!
Thanks amigo! We should do a video about your Vortex86
Great video!
Thanks!
These are good ones, I leaned more into the strategy and sim games though. Sim City, Civ, and Master of Orion. I also like Mech Warrior 2.
I'll have to check out that Master of Orion, someone else mentioned that game too.
@@techjesse There are 2 different games: Master of Orion is a space civilization game, especially part 2 very nice. Master of Magic(On Steam nowadays with the best patches and mods like Caster of Magic) is set in 1600 A.D., you play as a wizard with different kinds of magic against other wizards. While being also in a civ style environment, your citys and Peoples give you mana and gold etc to power your magical kingdom. It has unique, very complex combat mechanics. There is so much to explore here.
Super video, thanks for better day.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
I just subscribed to your channel, good stuff!
Year, loving this Games.
What the hell man, that grinding sound in the 19:00 mark was present for all of these things? As a kid I thought I broke my dad's PC when I play it and he's not around.
Nice memories! ❤ I liked most Master of Magic 1993, and Utopia-The Creation of a Nation. Was unfortunately too young for shooters like Doom.
Oh and played it on a pentium 2 MMX 200Mhz with 1 GB HDD. 😂
That's a great machine!
Mechwarrior 3(one of my greatest pc gaming joys)
Dark Forces II:Jedi Knight (best FPS ever, not an opinion).
Rainbow Six:Rogue Spear(never jumped out of my seat more than playing this game). Indenture(fan made version of Atari 2600 Adventure, only gigantic version with hundreds of screens.)
Baldurs Gate II(the ultimate D&D experience)
Jurassic Park Trespasser(modded version only, yes it was terrible on release. the modded version fixes it and displays the graphics like the screenshots we saw in the magazines)
C&C Red Alert 2(wasn’t a fan of the series but played the crap out of this game)
Space Quest IV(vga masterpiece! adventure game for people who don’t like adventure games. I loved this one for sure)
Thanks! I definitely have to hunker down and play Space Quest. I never did play it in the 90s but have heard about it so much over the years!
Man, I always tell people about Heretic but no one ever remembers that game cuz most people still didn't have a computer in those days, I also played a pc shooter type game called Rise of the Triads. Lol Fun video man, 90s pc gaming was such a new and unexplored world of gaming, it's fun to see what it's turned into now. Thx for the vid 👍
Rise of triads was awesome.
We had an epic Rise of the Triad multiplayer battle, it's in another video I uploaded a couple weeks ago of our most recent LAN party. Great game!
not one game i haven't sunk hours in. good job.
Thanks!
Great Game Review Jesse
Thank you David! For me, RetroGaming is the main reason I enjoy restoring these old rigs. It's so fun playing these games with the kiddos, except they say these games are too hard!
You made Quest for Alqaeda? Thats some OG shit right there. I also remember Bush and Saddam Husein versions. Also, what GPU did you have for Half-Life, because I remember playing Half-Life on Pentium 133 with integrated Cirrus 1MB (no hardware acceleration) and it was almost slideshow.
Indeed! Glad you remember my old games! I cheated a bit in that particular shot, the monitor is actually attached to a 400MHz Celeron just out of the frame, with a Matrox card in it.
My top 10 PC Games 90's :
1.Duke Nukem 3D (Hail to the king baby 😎)
2.Starcraft
3.Master of Orion 2
4.Quake
5.Heroes of might and Magic 3
6.Xcom
7.Baldur's Gate
8.Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
9.Monkey Island 2
10.Syndicate with American revolt expansion
+ honorable mention : Z , because I'm a huge fan of The Bitmap Brothers from the Amiga era.
Heck yeah! Lots of wonderful games on that list. I haven't played a few of them, I'll have to check them out.
I only had a 286 at first and played a LOT of lightspeed/hyperspeed
For maximum versatility & stability, I ran DOS as the OS, then start Windows 98. I did the same for Windows 95, but I had less crashes with Windows 98. I also used moslow.exe from one of my Origin disks to slow things down, because I also had a P133 & a P166. Thanks for the video, it reminded me of when we would have a LAN party & BBQ. (BBQ = no AFK problems.)
LAN parties were the best! You should start them up again in your area. I was surprised to see the amount of interest and how many folks turned up when we held one. Looking forward to doing another one soon.
@@techjesse How did you let other people know that you planned a LAN sesssion as we in Germany called it before the term LAN party took over?
@@armorgeddon It was a mix of friends / word of mouth, and a couple who found out from a facebook group for retro games. We're planning on doing another one in a couple of months. So cool to see so much interest in it! I think the next one will have an even bigger turnout.
A great list, although I'd have added Civ 2 and Half-life somewhere personally.
Great games! I did mention half-life at the top but not in the top 10. I tried to think of a few lesser known great titles. Civilization 2 was awesome, although I didn't play it until way later in life.
Diablo 2 and now D2r are one of my favorites and like you have played every year, to much for me to honestly admit. The stuff i could have got done instead of playing that game, where do i start?
Time playing Diablo II is time well spent!
I still play Diablo 2 today, now in the new version. When doom came it left me and my friends crazy.
Yeah it's definitely one of the greatest. Has been my go to for over two decades now
Unreal...
Heck yeah! That was such a great game.
I love this video, great picks and fun stories. Although, Diablo 2 wouldn't be 1990's game lol its a 2000's game. But I do know how hard it is to mention Diablo 1 without mentioning Diablo 2. 😅
Yeah I cheated a little on that one. DII was June 2000, close enough to the 90s ;)
That decade was good for PC because of great RPG games.
So many great RPGs from back then! Which ones were your favorites?
@@techjesse Arena, Daggerfall, Fallout 1 and 2, Ultima Underworld, EOB 1 and 2 (never tried 3), Lands of Lore, and many more. Also RPGs on PS1 - FF7, 8.
@@techjesse And ofc, great dungeon crawler, Black Crypt (only on Amiga - i sold Amiga sometime in 1995, and bought my first PC maybe two weeks later).
I did know what game it ws from the first musical note!! They should remaster the first diablo like they did with D2: Resurrection.
Who would've thought back then that Red Alert will be so close to our reality now rather than just a game!
I'm still waiting for a real life Tesla Tank to come out though...
I had that mouse pad!
Funny to realise you created the Al Qaida game which was shared a lot on our high school back in the days 😊
lol that's awesome to hear! It's crazy to see so many people still remember that satirical game. Thanks!
Day of the Tentacle for me.
Wonderful game! I am planning on having one of my kiddos play through it sometime this year.
"Magic Carpet" , for gods sake!
That's a great one! I believe the CD came free with my Compaq Presario, or at least I picked it up around the same time, it has been about 30 years!
Does anyone remember The Journeyman Project?I used to love that game.
I love SC too.
Lotta hours spent at LAN parties playing StarCraft!
Swat 3 would be on this list for me.
I haven't played it, I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
I wouldn’t equate top 10 90s PC games with majority copy paste doom shovelware.
Diablo 1,doom,half-life,quake3,unreal/tournament 99,soldier of fortune,blood,torment,.......IDK SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM REALLY
Ok. Maybe you can help me. So i played a 90s pc game on my families dell computer. It like a futuristic type jail setting. And if you didn't finish in time a wall of electricity would sweep the entire map and kill everyone????
Doesn't sound familiar. There is a big DOS games group on Facebook, has over half a million members. Might want to ask there I'm sure someone would know.
You need more subscribers lol
I see half-life ,I press like !👌
hero s quest! monkey island, kings quest
Monkey Island and Kings Quest series are excellent! I haven't played Hero's Quest, I'll check it out. Thanks!
What no Fallout 1 or 2?? Nice list tho.
Thanks! Sadly, I didn't play Fallout 1 or 2 until way later in life. Great games!
Everquest.
I never did get into that one, I had a lot of friends playing it circa 2001 but I knew it would be a major time suck so I opted not to.
Not having Quake is total blasphemy
If it's any consolation, we did have an epic Quake deathmatch at our retro LAN party a few weeks back: ua-cam.com/video/r0PmEHLuPxE/v-deo.html
Meridian 59 is the greatest game of the 90s, sorry. It may be using just the Doom engine but look what they did with it.
I'll have to check it out, thanks!
Aliens
How about the Aliens TC for Doom? That was a great one, I still remember downloading it from a BBS
Stonekeep.
daddy man 5445
Doom was good untll final doom came out on the ps1
2 games shouldn't be on this list
But it is on the internet, so it is official.
nerd
Hey, I resemble that remark!
Back when you didn't need a Deep Blue supercomputer to run games. Now it's all about video cards, ram and frame rate. Loved Diablo. Also X-Wing. I remember getting my medal off Princess Leia for beating off an empire attack in a A-Wing.
