- For this video, and continuing where we left off, I gathered 10 of my favorite DOS games released back in 1991 that grabbed me and made me lost tons of hours devouring every moment that I spent playing them! Let’s take a look!
Note: the developer/publisher for Monkey Island 2 stated in 21:19 is from Another World. It should read "Developer: LucasArts" and "Publisher: LucasArts / U.S. Gold".

Man... just browsing through the timeline of the video, all the memories that come back put tears in my eyes.
Amazing times to be alive ;)
I read nostalgia means the pain from an old wound in greek
I went for PC in 1991, so this is great for me. I bought most of my PC games in 1993-1995. The golden years!
Indeed! The best time to be alive ;)
I got a 486 at the time and an SB pro. One word (or maybe two). Jazz jackrabbit!!!
But maybe that's something for another video
Jazz will certainly be featured later ;)
I think the ultimate jack jackrabbit experience is No. 2 with the split screen hot sit and hi-res VGA graphics. The Xmas one was also very very good (and possibly free?). Sound design/music was definitely their strong point! I am looking forward to hearing your (@itsapixelthing) POV
Civilization is quite possibly my all time favourite game. It's the only game that's been installed on all my computers. I first played it during the Christmas of '91, and i played it earlier today...
Such an awesome experience! No doubt! :)
Crazy but the original is the one I didn’t play! Still my favorite game however.. If I could have just one game for the rest of my life it’d be that one.. I’d have to just decide between the various versions
I never like the Civilization titles. The game play always felt like too much work.
I preferred call to power. Specifically ctp 2, which I bought from the school book drive in 2000 for $5.
I know this is about playing og pc games, and trust me, I did. But man, call to power was just perfect.
I also played a similar game called Pharaoh. It was much more focused on city building rather than conquest, but I still play it to this day.
As for the civ series? I don't think I've played a civilization title since 2007.
@@zap_collection6511 Good thing both Civilization and Call to Power exists, then. Gives both of us something we enjoy to play!
I personally never got into CtP, and I don't quite know why.
Pharaoh was great! Still play it on occasion
Great list! I can't believe the number of masterpieces that came out in good old 1991
1992 coming up next! It will be even tougher to choose! ;)
I just recently found your channel so I'm way late to the party but I LOVE your videos. As a kid who has strong memories of my dad taking me to Babbages to get games like King's Quest V, these videos are awesome.
Thank you so much for your kind words! You just made my day! Enjoy the content! Cheers!
Congrats for the video. It is the first video I watched in your channel. Now I'm a subscriber and I will watch everything. I'm an enthusiastic of old games. Thanks for the content.
Thanks for your kind words! Enjoy the content! :)
Thanks for another great video. I think a yearly top 10 is a nice theme 👍
My pleasure! :) Coming up: 1992! :)
Ah police quest - another game that seemed impossible as a kid lol. We are so spoiled by being able to look up solutions within minutes now 😂
The Kindred was incredible! :)
In 1991 I only dreamed of a computer and saw only the game with lemmings from these games and later in 1995 - the Civilization.
These videos are wonderful. Yay! The first year I had a DOS computer, the Tandy 1000RLX. Considering my first game ever was MI2 and one of my next purchases was Out of this World,(AKA Another World), I was hooked. I can't believe I have never owned a copy of Lemmings though!
Seriously? I was hooked to the original Lemmings on the Amiga :)
Nice games! Played some on my Amiga computers, love Another World, Monkey Island 2!
So good! :)
Loved the wing commander series and civilization
So good :)
Great video✌
Thanks ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing nice
Great video again, I'm a huge fan of Monkey Island (also with a poster in my Playroom), and I spent hours playing Civ!!! One of my favourite games ever!! I would had here Space Quest IV! Abraço
Thank you so much for watching and for leaving your feedback, my friend! Take care! Abraço!
Simpsons arcade game....man what a classic...
You can't go wrong with it ;)
Grande video !!!
Obrigado 😀
Great video mate you gained another SUB!@
Appreciate it! Enjoy the content :)
I never really liked playing sports games on the computer, but speed ball 2 was something else. It was a fighting game. I would play it just to send the other players off with the robot ambulence.
Speedball 2 was, indeed, something else :)
We’re glad you could play Space Quest IV. As usual, you’ve been a real pantload.
omg 45 seconds into the video seeing the GAMES you have to leave out just shows what a year it was for DOS GAMES. All EPIC
Indeed! An amazing year! :)
Wing Commander is such a cool game, they convinced Luke Skywalker to join forces and take out the bad guys.
Indeed :)
Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, and Discworld would be on my list too. I feel that those three are the line that all future (humor-driven) point and click games had to compete against.
So awesome! No doubt :)
I totally forgot about Speedball. I loved that game
My personal two favourites are prehistorik and another world. I just bought a 286 with a colour VGA monitor. And both games looked amazing. I will never forget the digitised sound from the pc speaker that played throughout another world. And all that in one 1.44MB disk!
The ending with the amazing (that's how I remember it) score. It must have taken me only one weekend to finish the game. But when I did, I played it again and again. There's several games these days that took inspiration from another world. One of my favourites is the eternal castle remastered with the cga aesthetics. It takes the whole genre to a whole new level and unfortunately it hasn't been praised enough by the press. I would highly recommend it for anyone who loved another world.
Indeed, the sound that came through the pc speaker while playing Another World was "out of this world" :) Thanks for sharing your story and memories! Appreciate it!
1991 was a great year!
Indeed it was :)
You did not have to swap Monkey Island disks on Amiga if you had a hard drive.
Yeah, I know. But no one had hard drives in their Amigas back in the day. At least here in Portugal ;)
Wahoo Lemmings....All the Versions...I had a 286, it was an upgrade to the Atari 7800 games
The Learning Company had some great games under their SUPER SOLVERS line!
Some cracking pc games on this list . Odd that the simpsons arcade game only came out on pc and c64 , an amiga version could of been great.
Wing commander 2 was superb on the pc and really showed off the extra graphical powers over the amiga , and of course no disk swapping as u installed to hd by default
Oh yeah ;) thanks for stopping by and for leavIng your comment! Appreciate it!
Jepp 1991 was the year when basically the turnaround of the PC compared to the ST and Amiga happened, the first games came out which simply had the superior version on the PC, the final nail into the STs and Amigas coffin on the computer side then was doom and of course the Ultima Underworlds in 93!
Indeed. And there was even a speech pack for WC2 that made all cinematics fully spoken! Ofc i didnt had it as a kid but i bet it must be awesome to experience it like that - especially back then when such a thing was something new ( due to the HDDs from pcs that were big enough for such gimmicks) a pioneer time of gaming
Ahhhh! The memories! :) Thanks for this!
@@user-wr5yg6cy2b I had the speeck back back then, I remember the intro video being fully voiced, which was quite impressive (but so was the Ultima 7 intro with the eery guardian coming out of your monitor mocking you) I cannot remember whether there ware other sequences voiced as well, its been too long!
Others from 1991 that I also liked were: Eye of the Beholder, Gobliiins, Space Quest 4, Cruise for a Corpse and Ecoquest
Nice picks, no doubt! :) Thanks for sharing!
those digitized gfx on police quest 3 still look good I can only imagine seeing that in 1991
It was mindblowing! :)
Not all that many games I played from 1991 to make a list. What I did play was Falcon 3.0, blues brothers, commander keen 4 and a very obscure shootemup called xyphr
Hummm...have to check that last one you mentioned ;) Thanks!
Man... great choices ! like
Awesome to know! Thanks :)
Absolutely criminal that Scorched Earth isn't here! Criminal, I say!
Right? :) So good!
I was not really part of the DOS era of gaming since I stuck with consoles and AMIGA as long as I could BUT I played some of these on AMIGA and these seem like some solid picks.
These are really great games! Thank you so much for stopping by and for leaving your comment! Appreciate it!
Good list, but can't believe you left out Accolade winter challenge! One of my all time DOS favorites.
Sorry! So many great games this year!... Many of them would eventually be left out of the top 10. Cheers! Thanks for watching and for leaving your comment!
@@itsaPIXELthing Sure no problem! Maybe you can do a video on this game at one time!
Btw; when you do the 1994 list, I would recommend having another look at King's Quest 7. I think a lot of people dismiss this game, but they've never played it from start to finish. It's actually a really great adventure game, almost as good as KQ6.
As someone who didn't have a PC growing up, it's interesting to see how much more advanced PC games were than console games at this time.
Yeah, indeed! Thanks for stopping by and for leavIng your comment! Cheers!
JOE & MAC was on PC? I never knew. I was like 8 in 1991, and we still were gaming on the C64/128, and Sega MD. We got our first Windows/MSdos PC in 1995 I think
Thanks for sharing your memories ;)
Blue Force is LEGENDARY!
Indeed, it is ;)
Salut to Another World, such a unique game.
Clean and beautiful graphics, lovely story and well directed, most of all easy to play and not stupidly hard for a kid.
No doubt! Awesome memories playing Another World! And all the others, for that matter :) Cheers!

Thanks! Appreciate it :) Enjoy the content!
Awww yeah, I played the hell out of Wing Commander 2.
I played civilization for hundreds of hours on Amiga 500 when I was a kid. Having no conceptual understanding of what a settler was I was puzzled why giant rabbit like creatures built cities. 😂
Eh eh eh eh! :) Thanks for watching :)
The Dig, Sim City and Alone in the Dark.
The Dig is amazing! One of my favorite point n click adventure games of all time, released back in 1995! Check my top 10: ua-cam.com/video/rLRpHRnFqAI/v-deo.html
And, as for Sim City, it was released in 1989 and featured on my Top 10 DOS games from that year: ua-cam.com/video/_O0g9YBjXJE/v-deo.html
About Alone in the Dark, released in 1992, I never really enjoyed it because of the tank controls. Same thing happened later with the first game in the Resident Evil series.
Thanks for stopping by and for leaving your comment!
Another great video, but from this collection I didn't played all of them as in the year 1990, One of my favorites is The Simpsons. Great game but a little difficult.
Awesome! :) Did you had the change of playing the arcade original (Simpsons game) back in the day with 3 more mates? Such an amazing experience! :)
@@itsaPIXELthing no, only played o PC, with a friend.
Another World is great! Eric Chahi is Genius!
Indeed, he is :)
Always wondered if the later series called Oddworld was related to Another World or just somewhat similar..
I still can’t get over we’ve been playing DMA Design/Rockstar games for well over 3 decades lol
It's crazy, isn't it? 😀
Monkey island is the best amiga game adventure and point click.shame they dont make random and mixed up try it type games like the amiga nowadays
Yeah, indeed
Quand tu vois les jeux extraordinaires qui sortaient dans la période 1984-1994 (l'âge d'or) et que tu compares avec les jeux qui sortent de nos jours...
Ils étaient beaucoup plus amusants, n'est-ce pas? :)
@@itsaPIXELthing Plus amusants, plus inventifs, plus originaux, plus ambitieux ! J'ai eu un PC en 1992 et avant le PC j'avais eu un Atari St puis un Amiga. J'ai joué à Dungeon Master, King's Quest 6, Leisure Suit Larry, Monkey Island, Pirates!, Civilization, Populous, Carrier Command, Betrayal at Krondor, Wing Commander 2, Sim City, Prince Of Persia, Lands of Lore, Another World, Croisière pour un Cadavre, le Manoir de Mortevielle, Maupiti Island... J'en oublie. Il y avait une atmosphère, une ambiance, il y avait une envie de bien faire de la part des programmeurs. De nos jours l'univers du jeu vidéo est triste, lisse, sans beaucoup d'intérêt.
Tu as tout dit. Je partage la même opinion.
As someone who has both PC and Amiga experience at what year do you think the PC caught up with and what year the PC surpassed the Amiga, as far as gaming graphics and sound.
By 1990, the PC market became so popular that videogame related companies preferred to get the PC versions released first, even knowing that the Amiga would deliver better graphics and sound. By that time, 65% of the home computer market was made up of IBM compatibles, with the Amiga at 10% and every other platform (including Atari and Apple) somewhere below that mark. By December of 1992, 82% of the gaming market was focused on PCs, with Apple taking 8% and the Amiga just 5%. So I guess that it was around this period (March of 1992) that the PC started to reign supreme and showed off all its potential as a (very expensive) games' machine with the release of the 486 DX2 66. It was also the year of the Soundblaster 16 and Adlib Gold sound cards. I recall that my IBM PS/1 486 DX2 66 MHz costed over 2000 pounds back in September of 1993 without a sound card and CD ROM drive! Way over the price of an Amiga 1200! Despite that, this was also the time when the Amiga received some of its best games ;)
Yes, but at what year did the PC surpass the Amiga in graphics and sound. What I'm trying to say is when did people just bite the bullet and upgrade to the pc because of its graphics and sound.@@itsaPIXELthing
@stephenkennedy6358 I already answered that. For me was in 1992, when the Intel 486DX2 66MHz processor arrived and, as well, the Adlib Gold and Soundblaster 16 sound cards.
17:48 nuclear Gandhi is only an urban legend, that's why you never saw it.
Yeah, that's what I said at 17:56 😊
Still hadn’t yet migrated from amiga to PC in 1991, but some classics on here! Lemmings & Monkey Island are all time greats!!
So awesome, indeed! :)
The Simpsons game looked pretty great at the time, there were not many games with cartoon graphics like that. And Marge would swing her vacuum cleaner as a weapon, lol.
Indeed :) So much fun! Pretty difficult, but a great game, no doubt!
Desconhecia o Speedball mas gostei do que vi
Super frenético 😀
MI2, my absolute favorite Monkey Island game and a definite #1! The game information screen in the video could use some correction.
Indeed, an absolute classic! 😊 About the info screen, what did I missed?
@@itsaPIXELthing Monkey Island 2 has the same developer/publisher as the previous game, Another World.
:( oh, man :( what a bummer :( copy and paste and forgot to change that info :( thanks for your watchful eye! I watched the video 3 or 4 times before uploading and, even so, it went through with that error. Again, thanks for pointing that out.
13:02 Don't blame the editorial team.... They didn't know which was which... Blame the developer was advocated piracy on "unlabeled" discs
People probably didn't care because as far as they were concerned, they got a full game for free.Few mags would do that, and they defiantly wouldn't encourage piracy.
FYI. I had to check/play in brwser on My AbandonWare the DOS version of Speedball 2 you were showing was in fact the "same" version of the Amiga.. (color withstanding)
I just couldn't believe you could make a dos game so darn good with limited memory.... then i realized you cut out the audio 😆 .. Good choice.
Fuck, I played ALL of them.
I feel so old.
😁
I loved Lucas Arts game !!
If you loved LucasArts games, you have to check my history/documentary video on them ;) ua-cam.com/video/-AS2Mk5kJto/v-deo.html
Ghandi bug is actually a fabrication, it doesn't occur, Ghandi can nuke though, but they don't go all aggressive as the urban legend states.
Thanks for clarifying that ;)
CIV 1 is the one to go!!! :D
blues brothers on pc isn't that bad. 1991 would be a great year if it wasn't followed by 1992 and 1993!
Indeed! 1992 and 1993 will be really hard to choose just 10 games!
You could play Monkey Island 2 on a 1mb Amiga without a hard drive. Was it possible to play the game without a hard drive on a PC?
Gladly, on PC, you have to install the game.
@@itsaPIXELthing :) You can install the game on an Amiga as well
@@orhunkabakliYeah, I know. But on PC you can only play the game if it's installed on the hard drive. There's no way you can play it just by swapping floppy disks like you would do on the Amiga. Adding an HD on my Amiga was not a cheap deal. By then I was already trying to convince my parents on buying a PC, what eventually happen 2 year later, by 1993 ;) And I gald it took that long, 'cause the processor I got with my IBM PC was the amazing 486 DX2 66 MHz ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing The only thing I did to add a harddrive to my Amiga 1200 was to get the hard drive and plug it to a cable coming out of my Amiga's ide port. Not expensive at all. Later I bought a ppc card for my A1200 with 040-25 and 603e-166 around 1996 or 97. In 1999, I got myself an A4000T with a 060-60 and 604e-233 (today the 060 runs at 66mhz and ppc at 400Mhz)
4:51 Why is the magazine talking about Konami?
It was published by Konami (America), Inc. in the US, for some reason.
@@itsaPIXELthingA Japanese company published a European game in the USA? 😆
The north American division of Konami that, supposedly, also would publish games from European studios.
21:56 No version of Money 2 has insult sword fighting. not even the Amiga version..
iMuse System was good, but i think they never did this in future releases, because getting this right in transitions between scenes was a nightmare to code .
"A" for commentary told ya that :)
Also in LucaArt games the idea you can die i still think is a myth... Although it "looks like it" in Monkey 2 over the pit of acid, he comes back to life.. It' an illusion.
They used iMuse in Star Wars Dark Forces, for example, released in 1995. And, in relation to Monkey Island 2, I said that "insult sword fighting was truly missed in this one" ;)
EcoQuest & Civilization I
came up in my suggested...you look like MS-DOS
I love your accent
Appreciate it :)
Bro are you ok?
Yeah! Thanks 😉
MI2 disk swapping is nothing in compare to Police Quest 3. To this day I hate Sierra games :P. I did finish MI2 (and Fate of Atlantis) on A500 with only one floppy drive. But PQ3 - it was horror (can't remember if I even completed first day).
Yeah! Indeed! :)
Perdi horas no Civilization. :D
Tão bom! 😊
Lemmings :( I wish Sony would just give up the rights/or publish it on GoG or steam.
That would be great :)
Nice Video ! Sub & Like ! And Love Retro Games !
Appreciate it! Thanks! Enjoy the content!
@@itsaPIXELthing Thank you for your reply ! If you are interested in the nostalgic game culture of Japan, please subscribe to the my channel !
Хороший обзор 👍
Thanks! Appreciate it ;)
I've never understood why the Simpsons arcade game gets the love it does. It's flashy for sure, but it's pure garbage as far as a well-paced beat'em up goes. Just a cheap way to eat coins and not a good gaming experience at all.
Well, I had tons of fun with it, both at the arcades with 3 more friends and by myself on PC ;) Thanks for watching and for leaving your much appreciated feedback!
@@itsaPIXELthing It's all good. To each their own right?
Indeed ;)
I didn’t like it all that much, it’s ok I suppose. Definitely not on the level of TMNT arcade or Battle Toads
I only played Prehistorik and Space Quest 4, back in the day, to be honest. The Simpsons and Lemmings graphics look pretty terrible imho…
Fair enough :) But don't judge the games for its looks ;) They were addictive as hell! :) Cheers! Thanks for leaving your comment!
