This is probably the best lighting breakdown I've ever seen. I appreciate that you explained why you chose that specific light. I also like that you showed different photos from the same light. I would love to see more of these breakdowns. Btw the pictures are amazing.

So refreshing to have an assistant join you, Mr. Knight, in your lighting breakdown. A fan of your work (I used to be a director of photography in NYC before becoming a photographer myself) for years and getting a small glimpse into your process makes, for me, your images even more interesting.
It's amazing to find videos like this on UA-cam. I'm glad a fellow NYC resident in the biz is a fan of his work as well. I almost got in to work at Click Studios in London and might have seen him work, back in '96 (How dated of me).
An ex-stage technician then NYC photo assistant here . . . I knew it! Years later I get to see your video here and I felt your awesome work was theater-inspired, complete with a follow spot. Thank you, I feel like the mystery is solved.

The spot light is a nice tool to use for more dramatic light, I have use this sort of lighting myself. Nice job of explaining the use! Thank you guys!

Ohh yes ! I do love the circular spot I've just found a lovely old STROBE version and I love it!....( yes it IS dangerous).
Im guessing that you guys have tried the whole range of Robert Juliat follow spots. In this example it shows that you are working with the Alex (a 2k tungsten head). Another option beside having to use the larger Lancelot is to try strobe. The profoto zoom spot will give (when running with 2 x 2400 pro 8/10 packs) 4800 watt seconds, meaning you can wrap this up with cto(cts)/frost etc and still have a large range of control without dimmers and .ND. It is also lighter and more portable (i mean not by much but hey). the 650w modelling lamp is easier on the eyes of the model than a direct continuous source. anyway, im guessing you guys tried all this. Just a quick note on the climbing up stands, I know in stills we have to be way way way faster, but as Stills and Moving image are coming closer together, I know alot of gaffers that would disagree with that technique, you are already loading out that wind up without adding unstable body weight. either switch to a long john crank stand, grab a ladder or at least have someone spotting it. We all want photo assistants working quickly and safely.

I used a stand for most parts but
I also had someone hold the light with security heat prove gloves and it worked perfectly fine.
The light is quit heavy
but in order to change settings there nothing more effective than manpower!
I loved seeing people mad enough to use a Robert Juliat follow spot for portrait photography, I used these for follow spotting 😂. But yes I think you can get the same shape of light from flashes. Powerful highly focussed flashes and modifiers
